Please darlings can you suggest to me what good Biblical movies I should add to my watch list this holy weekend? It can be live+action or animated. I'm trying to put a list together but I'm stuck at the Jesus films. There's one that's 4 hours long... should I invest time into it?

R1 it's actually 6 hours. It's called Jesus of Nazareth and apparently it was a miniseries upon release. My bad

Jesus of Nazareth is my favourite Easter epic! Franco Zeffirelli Directing and a list of names starring!!

Absolutely Ben-Hur (1959). Not only do you get religion, a gigantic sea battle, and an eye-popping chariot race, you also get Stephen Boyd lusting after Chuck Heston.

The Passion of the Christ!

Of the Jesus movies, my fave is King of Kings (1961); Jeffrey Hunter is an iffy choice to play Jesus, but everything surrounding him is terrific, from the supporting cast (Robert Ryan, Rip Torn, Hurd Hatfield, Viveca Lindfors, Siobhan McKenna) to the spectacular cinematography and direction, especially Nick Ray's use of split-diopter.

The Song 🎵 f Bernadette—not Biblical per se, but “holy.”

Another good one is Barabbas (1961) with Anthony Quinn as the criminal pardoned instead of Jesus; the ending is surprisingly ambiguous.

That Mel Gibson snuff film.

The Ten Commandments is high camp. All that melodrama and religious pomposity. "Oh, Moses, Moses, you stubborn, splendid, adorable fool." I can't help laughing at that one.

R10... You mean " The Jesus Chainsaw Massacre."

I always think of Ben Hur as a Christmas movie.

On Easter eve it’s the Wizard of Oz

Not biblical exactly, but "Midnight Mass" on Netflix is sort of Easter-adjacent. Same with Calvary starring Brendan Gleeson.
As holidays go, Easter is very under represented in the movie department

I'm planning on watching two Biblical films that I haven't seen before: the 1925 BEN-HUR, starring Ramon Novarro and Francis X. Bushman; and Nicholas Ray's KING OF KINGS starring Jeffrey Hunter.
And then I'll be worshipping at the altar of Judy & Fred & Irving Berlin by watching EASTER PARADE for the umpteenth time.

The Passion of the Christ is a great movie if you enjoy watching a very good looking man, wearing not that many clothes, get beaten up and tortured for 2 hours.

I had a Tom Tryon-themed Easter Monday last year and it was perfect: The Story of Ruth, followed by The Cardinal. The Cardinal isn't exactly a Biblical movie and it's like 9 hours long but I was pleasantly surprised by it.

R26 We only get the side of Ramon Novarro's groin. And some unknown person's tightly clenched buttocks.

One Easter Sunday a few years ago, I happened to watch "The Killing of Sister George," all by myself. Not sure why I decided to watch it, I think I believed it was some kind of religious murder mystery at first (it's a '60s lesbian "mid-life crisis" story, LOL). I don't know how long it goes on, but it sure *seemed* like eternity. Kind of hilarious in its way. And exhausting by the time it was through.
