One of my well travelled gay friends recently mentioned that Vietnam is the new Thailand. Lots of pretty boys who love European/American men. Has anyone been there and enjoyed a "Gay Old Time" ? Are there gay bars, gay massage parlors, and gay hotels? I have a feeling this is a new emerging gay vacation spot.

I was just there in January. It is very conservative, socially.

No way is it has developed as Thailand. No one does pussy ping pong like Bangkok.

The country as a whole is conservative, as R1 said. Even so, the southern half and the northern half are totally different. Ho Chi Minh City is much more modern and progressive (well, as progressive as Vietnam gets). Hanoi feels more buttoned up and traditional. Much more of an overt military presence, etc. HCMC may be more your speed.

Great food. Hanoi is conservative but bustling. Also rather trashy

I was in Hanoi about 3 weeks ago, only for a couple of days, on our way from Cambodia and Laos back to North America . I'd been to cities much bigger than Hanoi (Shanghai, Tokyo, Beijing, Hong Kong) but I felt completely overwhelmed there and two days felt just enough since I was starting to feel exhausted. The traffic is brutal and every time we tried to cross the street it felt like we were tempting fate. It is a fascinating city, though.
On the other hand, I can't even start to tell how much my partner and I enjoyed Cambodia and Laos. Phnom Penh and Luang Prabang were great. Siem Reap, well, it was very touristy, but Angkor Wat and a number of other temples made it totally worth the visit.
There is certainly a kind of Westerner you see there which immediately makes you think "Pedo!"

A few months ago I met a new guy. We got along well at first. I am blond, pretty smooth, and trim.
He mentioned on our 3rd date that he was going to, and has previously been to Vietnam on vacation. He went on about the temples, the bargain prices, etc. Then he made a brief comment about the attractive "boys and men," I suspect scoping me out for a reaction, which he didn't get.
I have an unfortunate tendency to attract pedos and asian-lovers (same thing in my experience). I broke it off with him immediately.

I’m Asian and work in Hanoi. I wouldn’t say there’s a pedo scene here at all but Asian guys tend to look pretty young so that might be the case. I’m not a big fan of the apps and prefer saunas instead. There’s a certain fascination with foreigners here and I have seen some of the most repulsive trolls get action from much better looking vnm guys.

Luang Prabang, Laos is a must-see. I was in Vientiane for a week and have never seen so many Range Rovers is such a small city.
| by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 5, 2019 11:35 PM |
I don't think you're going to find a pedo "scene" at all anywhere, R9. That short of shit has gone underground due to international agreements prosecuting sex trafficking with minors. You can be arrested in the UK or the US for having sex with minors in SE Asia.
The point is, Vietnam is a country with a lot of poor guys who look good to pedos with money. I'm guessing, but I think accurately, that there isn't a lot of police attention focused on this in Vietnam. And I'm also certain that the action is mostly older western guys paying younger asian guys on a 1-on-1 hustling basis, for sex. Saunas and bars and cafes would be perfect meeting places.

We were walking down the Mekong promenade in Phnom Penh, near the Foreign Correspondents Club, so about as central as you can get there. There were a lot of these young school kids which must've been 13 and under and there's this really sleazy western guy who kept staring at them, then following them, I didn't even want to look back to see what else he was doing, I was so repulsed. It might be mostly underground but there's still enough of it out in the open to make you uncomfortable. I felt like I needed a Silkwood shower when we got back to our hotel.
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 6, 2019 12:37 AM |
I'm not a pedo by any stretch of the imagination, but I wouldn't mind checking out the action with Vietnamese guys in their 20s or 30s. How prevalent is that among Western visitors?

Excuse me? I was in viet in feb amd the place is bustling and not conservative at all. Gays are accepted there and fabulous schopd right out of your door. If you are in HCMC, nadam spa is a must, that gay spa is a fun mix of traditional and modern. Definitely skip Hanoi though, those bitches are fierce up there. Da Nang is ok.

I was part of a U.S. Army light infantry brigade 50 years ago. I remember how hot it was during summer in Saigon.
Otherwise, I am very much enjoyed all this.

Is there a muscle dude scene in Vietnam?
| by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 6, 2019 7:58 AM |
I am in Vietnam now, and I definitely think the North is conservative. Everyone here has told us how important it is to marry early and have children, and that people who don’t bring great Shame on their families. Also, at least in Hanoi, most people live in tiny living quarters with generations of families. There is very little privacy and individual identity.

You've described pretty much every country with a strong Confucian tradition: China, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, ... I didn't think Hanoi was particularly conservative or homophobic.
| by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 6, 2019 12:20 PM |
I wouldn’t say that Hanoi is particularly homophobic, but there is an overwhelming expectation that people fit into a narrow way of living with regard to family and marriage . Most peoPle I’ve talked to do not even consider that some people might not want to Marry the opposite sex by 25 years old and have children
