Type Fatters, what are your favorite lesser known Diet Sodas?

No Diet Coke or Coke Zero Sugar. We're talking slightly less common diet or zero sugar sodas.

I'll get us started. Love Boylan Diet Cola. Has a slightly peppery "old world" cola taste.

Cheerwine Zero Sugar. Southern classic. Wonderful black cherry flavor that isn't cloyingly sweet or "Robitussny" as many cherry flavored drinks are.

Canada Dry Zero Sugar Cranberry Gingerale. Bright, fizzy, zesty. Makes a great mixer, too!

There was a really good diet root beer that didn't taste "diet." I have forgotten which brand it was. I think it was Mug.

by Anonymousreply 3July 7, 2023 8:14 PM

I'm more of a Target person than a Walmart person, but Walmart's Clear American Fuji Apple soda is zero sugar and tastes surprisingly natural. Closest thing you'll come to Martinelli's without the sugar.

(They call it "Sparkling Water", but it's not... it's a zero sugar soda.)

There is new evidence that sucralose is not only correlated with diabetes, but may indeed lead to diabetes.

R3 - haven't seen it in a while, but would occasionally find A&W Zero Sugar Root Beer at Target. Recall it being quite good.

by Anonymousreply 6July 7, 2023 8:19 PM

I am proud that my family has been producting the delicious Boylan Diet Cola for years.

I use some of the same equipment I use for mother's Sitz bath to make this delicacy.

Fanta Dragon Fruit Zero Sugar. Thought it would syrupy, but actually very light and refreshing. Only seen it at convenience stores.

I had forgotten about that one, R2. It’s refreshing, especially in the summertime, and I agree that it’s a great mixer.

by Anonymousreply 11July 7, 2023 8:29 PM

Diet Shasta Cola. Made with Sucralose. Most other diet sodas are Aspartame, which I can't stand any more.

by Anonymousreply 12July 7, 2023 8:36 PM

R9 - thanks for the tip! Never heard of Barritts, but it looks like its sold at Publix stores near me. Gonna pick some up for Moscow Mules!

by Anonymousreply 13July 7, 2023 8:38 PM

Diet Inca Kola. The Zero Sugar version of the #1 soda brand in Peru. Can be found in many Latin American grocery stores and the 'international' aisle in mainstream grocery stores in the U.S.

I find the flavor a little hard to describe. It has a golden yellow color and is reportedly based upon the flavor of several Peruvian fruits, though most suspect the main flavor is from/inspired by lemon verbena.

Dr Brown’s diet cola (not made any more). It was so horrible tasting that its chief advantage was to stop you from wanting to drink soda. Unfortunately if you continued to drink it, you got used to it. But it was truly awful tasting.

by Anonymousreply 15July 8, 2023 1:32 AM

Dr. Brown's Diet Cream Soda is not bad.

by Anonymousreply 16July 8, 2023 2:02 AM

I still miss Dr Brown’s Diet Cel-Ray.

Squirt Zero Sugar

by Anonymousreply 19July 8, 2023 3:05 AM

R19 - looks like it might no longer be available (at least in the U.S.)

Though not carbonated, the Zero Sugar Dragonfruit Vitamin Water is super tasty, too.

I wish San Pellegrino made zero sugar or super low sugar versions of their sparkling beverages. Not their sparkling waters, but the sparkling fruit sodas -- like Limonata. They use so much zesty fresh citrus fruits and are so refreshing, but they're loaded with sugar.

I am genuinely surprised that it took five whole posts before someone helpfully pointed out that the chemicals in diet sodas will give you the diabeetus and kill you. Always such a joy in threads like these.

I miss TaB, which was the greatest diet soda ever (with the original Sugar Free Dr. Pepper a close second, followed by Pepsi Light).

I also miss saccharine, which had a much better taste. TaB continued to have saccharine for years. I gave up diet soda for a good long while, then the drugs I was on for cancer fucked up my taste and cold sensations. I couldn't eat, drink or touch anything cold, and my tastes were all off. Water tasted awful. I was reduced to drinking coffee, hot tea and room temperature diet soda. I was drinking diet soda for about 6 months at that point, then went on a paleo diet, and quit the diet soda cold turkey.

This past fall, after the cancer came back and I had to go back on those same meds, I had the same thing happen, only my taste sensations were even more fucked up and coffee and tea tasted horrible. I basically lived on room temperature S Pellegrino sparkling water and diet soda, mostly Canada Dry zero sugar (which is very good), because the ginger helped with my nausea.

I couldn't even drink stuff like Pedialyte because it either had sugar or sucralose, and I'm allergic or intolerant to sucralose. It goes right through me (and takes everything in there with it).

All this to say that I have recently finished my chemo and I am once again a helpless diet soda addict. I'm going to have to break out of it soon. I know it's terrible for me, and it's also ridiculously expensive now. (A 12-pack is close to $10 in LA grocery stores.)

Once I quit this time, I hope it's for good. The only thing that could bring me back is if they reintroduced TaB.

R26 I did read that artificial sweeteners harm your body’s microbiome of intestinal fauna, and lead to digestive and metabolic disorders.

by Anonymousreply 28July 8, 2023 6:50 PM

Good luck, R27; sounds as if you've been through a lot.

by Anonymousreply 29July 8, 2023 7:05 PM

R23 - are you in Slovenia? How would you describe the flavor? Cockta (or Cockta Free -- the zero sugar version) are apparently made from the fruit that grows on Dog Rose plants.

I don't know if Cokta is easily available in the U.S., but an Italian cola I've seen in Italian grocery stores is Mole Cola. It has a... more grownup taste than Coke.

I miss cyclamate, the best sugar substitute ever. It had the closest taste to sugar, without the unpleasant undertaste of sachharine. I'm sure that's why it was banned in the U.S.

by Anonymousreply 31July 8, 2023 9:55 PM

Diet Cherry 7Up used to be good, but I haven't had it a long time.

My true love (which has become much harder to find), Diet Hansen's Root Beer.

Their Ginger Ale is also excellent, and a little more of a kick to it than most diet ginger ales do.

Diet root beer. Also has the benefit of being caffeine free. A&W is by far the best but I think it's a Canadian brand.

by Anonymousreply 37July 8, 2023 10:33 PM

I recently found out that they brought back Clearly Canadian, a drink I loved as kid but I haven’t tried the new iteration yet. Is Izze considered a soda or those San Pellegrino carbonated fruit drinks (e.g. Izze Blackberry or SP Blood Orange Aranciata Rossa)? If not then Peach Fanta out of a Freestyle machine.

by Anonymousreply 38July 8, 2023 11:01 PM

r37 - I've seen A&W (including the Diet/Zero Sugar versions) in stores in the U.S. It's distributed by Keurig/Dr Pepper in the U.S. The Canadian bottler is separate and independent from K/Dr Pepper which is probably what you're thinking of.

R36 - I've seen the Hansen's Diet Root Beer (and the Diet Black Cherry and Diet Cola flavors) at Whole Foods and at Sprouts, in case you have either nearby.

Which one makes the best douche?

by Anonymousreply 40July 9, 2023 3:51 AM

Anyone tried Jones' Diet Cola? They're the craft soda company that makes a bunch of novelty flavors, but they apparently have a really good diet cola. But it isn't widely available and I sure as shit am not paying $35 to have a 12 pack shipped to me.

I just gave up Diet Coke 7 hours ago. I loved it. I was enjoying 1 can of Diet Coke a day plus 1 large fountain Diet Coke at some point through out the day. Is that worth worrying about as a pre diabetic fatty?

by Anonymousreply 42July 9, 2023 4:20 AM

A&W Cream Soda Zero Sugar or Faygo Diet Cream Soda.

by Anonymousreply 43July 9, 2023 4:57 AM

What is a “diet soda”?

by Anonymousreply 44July 9, 2023 11:00 AM

1. Fat people drink diet soda.

2. People who drink diet soda get diabetes.

3. Therefore, it is the diet soda causing the diabetes and other fat related health problems.

by Anonymousreply 45July 9, 2023 11:26 AM

Are you sure it isn't all the other shit the fatties are shoving down their gullets that are causing the beetus, R45?

by Anonymousreply 46July 9, 2023 3:15 PM

Your argument is inherently flawed, R45. Many people who drink diet soda do so because they think it helps offset all the other unhealthy shit they consume every day, unhealthy shit that could also cause diabetes. But do go on pretending you know what you're talking about.

by Anonymousreply 47July 9, 2023 5:40 PM

I drink Diet Coke because I like it. I can't stand regular Coke. It's much too syrupy and sweet.

by Anonymousreply 48July 9, 2023 5:54 PM

R30 It is popular in all ex-yugoslavian countries. It has a specific taste. To me it tastes like there's a trace of rum in cola. I've heard that there are some stores in US, that carry Balkan products, were you can find it

by Anonymousreply 49July 9, 2023 8:04 PM

r49 - In my city there are actually a couple of Balkan restaurants and grocery stores due to a larger than expected population of immigrants from former Yugoslavian countries. I'll have to keep an eye out for it the next time I visit one!

by Anonymousreply 50July 9, 2023 8:17 PM

Sucralose was declared safe after much research. HOWEVER, even new research suggests that daily drinkers of sucralose diet sodas are hurting their gut biome and in tandem, the molecule is NOT insulin neutral. So while it may be safe for people who ALREADY have diabetes, it is not safe for fatties who drink it everyday and are pre-diabetic.

But carry on, if you just enjoy it once a week or so.

Do NOT drink this shit everyday.
