Just watched this on the cbs website. That was quite the twist at the end. Did anyone else see that coming? What do you believe happened?

Why didn't the police believe the DNA evidence?

I, too, thought the case was fascinating. It was one of the best 48 Hours I've seen. Yeah, the police seemed to believe the cadaver dogs much more than the DNA evidence.

Agree 2, it was a good episode. As soon as I saw the photo, I thought, "that's her, thats Mary;" however, I can't get pass the fact that the cadaver dogs came up with a scent at both of the houses where the family had lived. And then there's the buried sneaker.

The show didn't really say what Mary died of. I know she had issues with alcohol. Maybe it was the cumulative effect of that? Other health problems?

[quote] The show didn't really say what Mary died of.
She died of Cancer
Having watched the show, there isn't a doubt in my mind that she WASN'T Mary Day - that photo that was recently discovered (showing a teenage Mary) clinched it for me.

Why did Mary leave the second family? According to the woman who took her in, she seemed happy living with her and her other children. Some people are just born runners I guess. Used to see that type of behavior quite often in the 80s and 90s.
How odd if the mother did have a secret daughter who took Mary's place. With all of the moving around Mary did, how did she acquire that thick southern accent? The experts they consulted should have been able to place the exact region it was from. I heard a hint of Traveller/ Gypsy when she spoke.
This would make a great movie, starring Jennifer Lawrence or Hailee Steinfeld. They could make the fake Mary trans to add an even bigger plot twist.

Julia Garner, who plays Ruth Langmore on the Netflix series "Ozark," would also make a great Mary Day.

A dog's nose vs. a DNA test. Hmm, which one is more reliable and valid?

In the end, though, they never explained how this runaway, who hadn’t spent any time growing up in the South had acquired what the linguists were certain was a Southern accent. But, yes, it otherwise sure seemed to be the same person.

This is why it’s so hard to prosecute a homicide without a body. 9/10 times the person is dead, but then there’s always weird cases like this.

This is the Frauiest Thread of All-Time. And yes, I watched this, it is indeed one of the top tens for 48 Hours.
I believe the science. I think? But then there’s this list:
Disappearance never reported to police Children told not to speak of her Photos of her destroyed Violent fight then disappearance Dad says don’t play in spot in yard Cadaver dogs find scent at first house Girls shoe found in grave Cadaver dogs find scent at second house Mother gives excuses for her own behavior Dad confesses, talks about a demon Mary appears at the PERFECT time
I mean.....have you ever ever seen a case with stronger circumstantial evidence? I can’t say that I have. WHY would the father essentially admit to killing her?!?!? He was under zero duress. None of it makes sense. The female cop was the cleaner, “I’m going to go out there and show these boys what good detective works looks like”.

Was Patsy Ramsey one of her foster parents?

No, R14. This one could handle her flashlight belts.

I believe the DNA. It seems like she had a very rough life. Maybe she just picked up that accent from the numerous people she lived with over the years. Maybe she had a southern boyfriend or something at one time. It's sad she didn't have a funeral. Her parents seemed really shitty not to even look for her.
| by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 6, 2020 6:32 AM |
They didn't look for her because they killed her.

The only thing the DNA test proved is that the woman who appeared was "a" daughter of the mother. It did not prove that it was Mary Day.

MARY! Day should be a national gay holiday.

r18, and I can’t remember, did they clarify if they had a comparison DNA sample at all? Like a hairbrush? I’m sure the answer is no....
I realize it is logical, but it’s also weird to me that we have no technology to prover her identity.....

r12
Actually 90% of all cases prosecuted without a body wind up with a "guilty" verdict.
