I rewatched this movie after many years. It’s pretty incredible. (Can you believe it’s 41 years old?!!)
Beautifully written and filmed.
The acting revelation is actually Mickey Rooney as the trainer

Truly a magical film. Absolutely love it.
Of course, there are the usual questions about how a horse could find enough food and fresh water to survive on that island.

Good movie for young kids and adults to watch together.
Strange that the cinematographer Caleb Deschanel wasn't nominated for an Oscar. His work is stunning.

I'm surprised by the negative review it got from Janet Maslin at the NYT. I love it. No point in worrying too much about critics.

It was stunning! The horse turned in an Academy Award winning performance.

The horse was wooden and missed all his cues. Not believable.

I loved the first half when the kid is shipwrecked. Once he was rescued and Mickey Rooney taught him to race I lost interest.

I love this. This was the first movie my family rented on our new “VCR!” I was so sad that it had to be returned the next day.

It’s one of my all time faves, but I kinda understand r9. On its own, the second half is good. And in the final race, it’s even rousing. But it’s a big gear change from the first half of the movie, which is a freaking masterpiece.
One of those rare for-all-ages movies that doesn’t talk down to kids.

I remember seeing it in the movie theatre (I can't believe this is over 40 years old!!!).
A large part of the film has no dialogue--when they stallion and the boy are shipwrecked on the island.
That section is absolutely stunning

And today there'd be about 12 sequels (one for every book Farley wrote) and even more merch and tie-in stuff than there was for the Coppola film.
