The Best Gladys Knight Song???

I love her voice so much.

Also: "Save the Overtime (For Me)' and "License to Kill".

I can sing along to most of the songs on this list, but I only dance like an idiot in my car to “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination”.

by Anonymousreply 2December 28, 2021 2:11 PM

I actually like her The Way We Were version. It was interesting. Her phrasing of it was kind of behind the beat, or she didn't sing the melody where she should've sung it. It sounded like she came in late but it was intentional, you know? But it worked!

Meh...I've heard better...

"Midnight Train to Georgia" is retired to my personal GK&P Hall of Fame.

But for the sheer melodrama, over the top, soap operas aspect of "If I Were Your Woman", and of course the superb, vocal cry and delivery of Ms. Knight, that is m fave single.

by Anonymousreply 5December 28, 2021 2:21 PM

Analinkus.

And, I blaspheme, but, I've always preferred Gladys' sound to Aretha's.

Chile, you better hope Aretha's ghost is haunting a Cracker Barrel and NOT checking out Datalounge.

Although all four of them shine in this one, Gladys' voice is so powerful here.

Trivia: Although first recorded by Rod Stewart in 1982, this song was re-released in 1986 by "Dionne & Friends" to raise money for AIDS research.

Good Christ, R12's video must be what Sandra Bernhard meant when she mentioned someone was on a real "theater people trip."

Am I the only one who thinks of Growing Pains when they hear this song? It was featured in a few episodes.

"Save the Overtime for Me" and "You're Number One in My Book" are underrated gems.

by Anonymousreply 20December 29, 2021 12:48 AM

I prefer their version of Hero Wind Beneath My Wings over Bette Midlers. Bette had a big hit with it but it was plain by comparison IMHO.

by Anonymousreply 21December 29, 2021 6:26 AM

Love Overboard is the best. It deserved a top ten rank.

On and On is great too.

Her "I Heard It Through The Grapevine," should leave Marvin feeling ashamed. I don't know why people preferred his version. Must be drugs.

Her #1 "Midnight Train To Georgia" was originally "Midnight Plane To Houston," but TPTB thought blacks were too poor to ride planes.

by Anonymousreply 22December 29, 2021 1:13 PM

I agree with R22 about "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." Gladys' version achieved only middling expense on the charts, while Marvin's soared to #1.

Barry must have laid the payola on thick for Marvin's version.

by Anonymousreply 23December 29, 2021 1:29 PM

Love Gladys...one of her best.

Actually Gladys took "Grapevine" to #2, while Marvin went to #1 for seven weeks. Gladys's version was prevented from going to #1 by the Monkees' "Daydream Believer"

either I Heard It Through the Grapevine or Everybody Needs Love

No, you can't pick two, the OP said BEST, meaning ONE.

by Anonymousreply 28December 29, 2021 6:40 PM

No way was Gladys' Grapevine better than Marvin's. Hers was an okay cover. Marvin's was a classic.

by Anonymousreply 29December 29, 2021 9:47 PM

R21, Sheena Easton’s version of “Wind” is much better than Gladys and Bette!

Gladys' voice has endured remarkably well.

by Anonymousreply 33December 30, 2021 2:18 AM

I agree with R20. Those are two of my favorites. I also like "Love Overboard."

by Anonymousreply 34December 30, 2021 2:31 AM

I love all the choices. But for me. If I Were Your Woman is sublime. I've heard that song at least 1000 times, yet when she sings "you're a part of me, and you don't even know it", I still get emotional.

by Anonymousreply 35December 30, 2021 2:34 AM

It Should Have Been Me is my favorite! I love Gladys, sans et avec Pips!

I lived through "Neither One of Us" in real life. He played it at me a lot as we were breaking up. I responded with Melissa Manchester's "Midnight Blue." One Sunday afternoon, after I'd left his apartment, we both ended up at the bar we used to hang out at. We were staring at each other from about five feet away when "Midnight Blue" came on. I left. I didn't see him again for years.

You're the Best Thing is probably my favorite.

Here she is, doing a nice rendition of that song. Still sounds great.

How does Knight perform her vocal gymnastics and it never sounds forced? It never sounds show-offy? It never sounds calculatedly overwrought?

(I'm thinking of, but won't mention their names, both dead and alive, who don't want to show me, they want to, with excessive delivery, tell me, the song's story.)

And the kicker is; Knight's genius and talent is, that perhaps she IS deliberately doing all 3, but still, she sounds as natural and honest as can be.

Pure talent, talent, talent. Did I mention talent?

by Anonymousreply 45December 30, 2021 1:43 PM

Yeah yeah r45 your referring to Aretha and Patti, we know we know.

This clip always makes me laugh. Gladys is such on the straight and narrow, I'm sure she was pissed off that Chaka turned out high for their live collab. Even Etta winced for a moment, unsure of what Chaka was gonna do in her state at the time. They all pulled it off in the end.

NO, You made the statement so YOU Have to pick one. Your anus is the ignorant anus in the room

by Anonymousreply 47December 30, 2021 11:10 PM

Saw her show in Vegas many years ago. She had one very irritating Pip on the bill with her who we could only assume she felt sorry for and offered him the gig. She sang like a dream. Loved Please Help Me I'm Falling - best of the whole night. The Way We Were? Hmm I think that safely stays the property of a certain Mrs James Brolin of Malibu.

by Anonymousreply 48December 30, 2021 11:22 PM

Imagine reporting on your tax return that your line of work was "Pip."

by Anonymousreply 49December 31, 2021 2:15 PM

R48, one of the Pips ("Bubba") was her brother, so perhaps it was him with her.

[quote]The Way We Were? Hmm I think that safely stays the property of a certain Mrs James Brolin of Malibu.

Not really! Hitting some nice notes isn't singing a song.

by Anonymousreply 51January 1, 2022 2:37 AM

I mean I still love Barbra's version but Gladys' hits differently

by Anonymousreply 52January 1, 2022 1:38 PM

By the time Gladys' last Motown album "Neither One of Us" hit the charts, she and the Pips were on their way to Buddah Records, pissed at the lack of promotion Motown for their projects (as well as a lot of other Motown artists). Barry was putting all his eggs in the Diana Ross basket, and there simply wasn't enough money to promote Ross and all the other Motown groups and individuals.

Rolling Stone praised "Neither One of Us" as one of their best albums for Motown, as well as The Four Tops final Motown album, "Nature Planned It," but both groups had bolted Motown by the time the reviews were printed.

by Anonymousreply 53January 1, 2022 3:45 PM

She is my second favorite colored singer right behind Darlene Ross !!!! I loved her song Midnight Train to Peoria !!!!

by Anonymousreply 54January 1, 2022 4:13 PM

Gladys and the Pips were not treated well by Motown. They opened for the Supremes on tour and apparently La Ross was not happy with how enthusiastic the crowd was for the opening act. She called Gordy and has them booted from the tour.

I had JUST listened to Gladyss sing ‘Do You hear What I hear’ when i saw this thread. Her voice is a true gift. Still, i have to agree with my pick:
