I love her voice so much.
Also: "Save the Overtime (For Me)' and "License to Kill".

I can sing along to most of the songs on this list, but I only dance like an idiot in my car to “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination”.

I actually like her The Way We Were version. It was interesting. Her phrasing of it was kind of behind the beat, or she didn't sing the melody where she should've sung it. It sounded like she came in late but it was intentional, you know? But it worked!

"Midnight Train to Georgia" is retired to my personal GK&P Hall of Fame.
But for the sheer melodrama, over the top, soap operas aspect of "If I Were Your Woman", and of course the superb, vocal cry and delivery of Ms. Knight, that is m fave single.

And, I blaspheme, but, I've always preferred Gladys' sound to Aretha's.

Chile, you better hope Aretha's ghost is haunting a Cracker Barrel and NOT checking out Datalounge.

Although all four of them shine in this one, Gladys' voice is so powerful here.
Trivia: Although first recorded by Rod Stewart in 1982, this song was re-released in 1986 by "Dionne & Friends" to raise money for AIDS research.

"Save the Overtime for Me" and "You're Number One in My Book" are underrated gems.

I prefer their version of Hero Wind Beneath My Wings over Bette Midlers. Bette had a big hit with it but it was plain by comparison IMHO.

Love Overboard is the best. It deserved a top ten rank.
On and On is great too.
Her "I Heard It Through The Grapevine," should leave Marvin feeling ashamed. I don't know why people preferred his version. Must be drugs.
Her #1 "Midnight Train To Georgia" was originally "Midnight Plane To Houston," but TPTB thought blacks were too poor to ride planes.

I agree with R22 about "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." Gladys' version achieved only middling expense on the charts, while Marvin's soared to #1.
Barry must have laid the payola on thick for Marvin's version.

Actually Gladys took "Grapevine" to #2, while Marvin went to #1 for seven weeks. Gladys's version was prevented from going to #1 by the Monkees' "Daydream Believer"

No way was Gladys' Grapevine better than Marvin's. Hers was an okay cover. Marvin's was a classic.

R21, Sheena Easton’s version of “Wind” is much better than Gladys and Bette!

I love all the choices. But for me. If I Were Your Woman is sublime. I've heard that song at least 1000 times, yet when she sings "you're a part of me, and you don't even know it", I still get emotional.

I lived through "Neither One of Us" in real life. He played it at me a lot as we were breaking up. I responded with Melissa Manchester's "Midnight Blue." One Sunday afternoon, after I'd left his apartment, we both ended up at the bar we used to hang out at. We were staring at each other from about five feet away when "Midnight Blue" came on. I left. I didn't see him again for years.

You're the Best Thing is probably my favorite.
Here she is, doing a nice rendition of that song. Still sounds great.

How does Knight perform her vocal gymnastics and it never sounds forced? It never sounds show-offy? It never sounds calculatedly overwrought?
(I'm thinking of, but won't mention their names, both dead and alive, who don't want to show me, they want to, with excessive delivery, tell me, the song's story.)
And the kicker is; Knight's genius and talent is, that perhaps she IS deliberately doing all 3, but still, she sounds as natural and honest as can be.
Pure talent, talent, talent. Did I mention talent?

Yeah yeah r45 your referring to Aretha and Patti, we know we know.
This clip always makes me laugh. Gladys is such on the straight and narrow, I'm sure she was pissed off that Chaka turned out high for their live collab. Even Etta winced for a moment, unsure of what Chaka was gonna do in her state at the time. They all pulled it off in the end.

Saw her show in Vegas many years ago. She had one very irritating Pip on the bill with her who we could only assume she felt sorry for and offered him the gig. She sang like a dream. Loved Please Help Me I'm Falling - best of the whole night. The Way We Were? Hmm I think that safely stays the property of a certain Mrs James Brolin of Malibu.

By the time Gladys' last Motown album "Neither One of Us" hit the charts, she and the Pips were on their way to Buddah Records, pissed at the lack of promotion Motown for their projects (as well as a lot of other Motown artists). Barry was putting all his eggs in the Diana Ross basket, and there simply wasn't enough money to promote Ross and all the other Motown groups and individuals.
Rolling Stone praised "Neither One of Us" as one of their best albums for Motown, as well as The Four Tops final Motown album, "Nature Planned It," but both groups had bolted Motown by the time the reviews were printed.

She is my second favorite colored singer right behind Darlene Ross !!!! I loved her song Midnight Train to Peoria !!!!
| by Anonymous | reply 54 | January 1, 2022 4:13 PM |
Gladys and the Pips were not treated well by Motown. They opened for the Supremes on tour and apparently La Ross was not happy with how enthusiastic the crowd was for the opening act. She called Gordy and has them booted from the tour.
