I'm listening to the deluxe re-master of this album released by Cherry Pop a few years ago. I originally bought the CD when it first came out in very early 1988. I was a freshman in high school. I have always liked Taylor Dayne and bought her stuff. Some of my favorite songs from this album are not the hit singles. "Carry Your Heart" is one of 'em.

She had a pretty good run of hits in the late 80s/early 90s.

One of her back singers had a hit with this:

"Everything Changes", Warren had written and composed for Taylor Dayne. Dayne had turned the selection down, however,[7] and Joe Galante, then president of RCA Records, through which Reunion releases were distributed, offered it to Troccoli, who recalled: "He played it, and I knew I could own it. This was something I wanted to say."[6]

Yes to Troccoli ! and this TD hit sent me into orbit!

Kathy Trocolli, also from Long Island, is a big deal singer in the Christian community now, and I believe has vowed to never do another pop album again. Taylor Dayne had a very big career but only in a very short time span. And she's sadly never been able to get it back.

I remember in '89, I didn't know what race Taylor Dane was. Her handlers wanted her to be mysterious and to appear to be black. It increased her appeal. Since there was no internet and she didn't do tv interviews, she remained a mystery for several years. Loved her voice and her songs back then.
| by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 18, 2018 3:50 PM |
Taylor Dayne has a big nose job to disguise her big Jewish nose. How could anyone think she was black???
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 18, 2018 3:54 PM |
R18 I remember that era so well and so much of that genre(the Troccoli hit for example) was so exalting. I was clueless at the time of the politics du jour but that type music put me in such a great mood regardless. Crossover into Christian rock would not surprise me. Often I found myself bopping along to an unfamiliar hit that I loved , only to find out it was Christian rock. I'd be a little embarrassed but WTH, I liked the sound so much. I was living in Springfield MO at the time so was inundated with music I might not have heard living elsewhere.

It was a great album, with Prove Your Love, Tell It To My Heart and I'll Always Love You going top ten and Don't Rush Me going all the way to #2. Dayne would have to wait for the Dianne Warren song, Love Will Lead You Back, to reach the top.
The song In The Darkness was written by Steinberg/Kelly who wrote, True Colors, Like A Virgin, So Emotional and Eternal Flame and Steinberg wrote Ronstadt's How Do I Make You.
The remake of Want Ads was especially good.

R19, bullshit. She was all over MTV and on tons of music programs singing live. This was her circa 1988 on American Bandstand talking about how she loves the Rolling Stones.

This was the other version of her first album cover (the one I got, but on cassette). I never understood how that worked--why some artists got multiple versions of their albums.

I liked the songs from her second album better. Heart of Stone was really good. It just missed the top 10.

Very interesting about Kathy Troccoli, R15 and R18! When I first heard “Everything Changes”, I was certain it was Taylor Dayne, and it’s ironic that she passed on a song that became a hit for someone else.
Never knew that Troccoli was a big-deal Christian singer, always assumed she was something of a one-hit wonder.

Tell it to My Heart epitomized the over-produced sound of late 80's power radio. Man it gives me a headache now but I did love it then..

Kathy is and was a contemporary christian singer. she had one pop hit crossover and was aimed to be like Amy Grant but reverted back to the christian market only when is didn't evolve.

I liked Taylor's cover of the Barry White song, which was one of her last hits outside the dance charts. That disco-esque music from the 90s was like catnip to me, I couldn't resist it. Lisa Stansfield had a bunch of great songs in that same vein - and her own Barry cover with Never Never Gonna Give You Up.

Link to late 1980s interview please r19. The post said she didn't do interviews back then. Answering a question does not an interview make. Your post gets 1/10.

Different covers were generally done for different markets, or, if the album flopped originally but got re-released on the back of a hit single. I lived in Europe at the time and I think the cover in R25's post is the one that you would see over there.

At one time her name was bandied about for a potential FUNNY GIRL revival. I wonder if it was the production the woefully miscast and inept Debbbie Gibson toured?

R30, had to laugh at the website line, “she bears scars that have produced a powerful and insightful communicator.” I’m sure she does!

She was never a great live singer, so she didn't have a successful concert career. She mostly played gay bars and festivals.

Does anyone actually find that Tig Notaro story about Taylor Dayne funny? At best, it is mildly amusing, right? The only real laugh comes at the end when she refers to herself as a "He/She."
WHY IS SHE SO FAMOUS?????

The reason her career lost momentum was because she and Clive Davis had a falling out. He recounts the falling out in his book.
After the success of Tell It To My Heart and Can't Fight Fate, Clive assumed it would be business as usual for the third album. But Taylor wanted to be more involved in the songwriting and there were disagreements between her and Clive. He didn't like the album and the only song he thought could be a hit was her cover of Can't Get Enough of Your Love. He thought releasing a remake was a bad omen (thought hypocritical since Whitney released a few covers). Soul Dancing is not a bad album but it's not as good as the first two and there were not enough hits. Also, Clive simply stopped promoting her. Original Sin got no promo (it didn't help that the film it was featured in, The Shadow, was a flop).

Wow, that Tig Notaro clip at R22 was labored. Could she drag it out any longer? Gave up about halfway through.
Interesting, R59!

Taylor Dayne's voice is a force of nature. I saw her at BB King's in NYC about 10 years ago and she blew the roof off that place.
Does she still tour at all?
| by Anonymous | reply 62 | February 20, 2018 12:53 PM |

| by Anonymous | reply 65 | February 20, 2018 1:52 PM |
Clive is awful. Any time a woman wanted to have more creative control, he was an asshole about it. See Kelly Clarkson.
| by Anonymous | reply 66 | February 20, 2018 2:25 PM |
Agree that Clive can be shitty, but when Kelly sang the songs chosen for her by Clive, she was #1. When she fought him and sang her own songs.... crickets.
It’s show business, not show artistic integrity and personal expression.

Julie Styne had pegged Taylor for a revival of "Funny Girl." Styne was singing her praises. Not sure why it never happened. I did see her in "Aida." She was good.
| by Anonymous | reply 69 | February 20, 2018 3:39 PM |
I saw Taylor discuss the revival of Funny Girl with Sue Simmons on Life at Five in 1994. Not sure if Jules Styne had anything to do with it, R69, he was practically dead most of 1994, dying in Sept. If the revival was far enough along to talk about it there must have been a producer behind it.
| by Anonymous | reply 70 | February 20, 2018 3:49 PM |
Yeah a lot of artists had fantastic careers because they had people helping them many good career decisions.
The ones that decide to tell those people to fuck off sometimes make shit decisions that make them unpopular or not as commercial.
They have a right to do what they want, but if they give up a winning formula in the name of creative control they can’t complain when it falls flat.
Diana Ross was like that in the 80s. She was so micromanaged by Barry Gordy that when she broke away from his control she was immune to advice or guidance and made a lot of weird music choices.

Clive Davis hates Jim Steinman (he rejected BAT OUT OF HELL and told him to learn how to write a fucking song) so that's probably why "Original Sin" didn't get more promotion. It's a great song and should have been a hit. The music video is very cool, too. But, the movie was a flop so that probably didn't help.
| by Anonymous | reply 72 | February 20, 2018 5:09 PM |
R70, in a Vibe Magazine article on Taylor there was a quote from Styne describing her in superlatives and suggesting he would never even consider a revival without her.

A few years ago my friend and I won free tix to a Christmas play/concert called Dee Snider's Christmas. Snider (from Twisted Sister) "narrated" a Christmas play with songs. Taylor had a role in the show. And well, the show was terrible. But Taylor still sounded amazing. But it was really sad watching her. She deserved better than to be playing in a half-empty show in Toronto in a show hosted by Dee Snider.
