r1: Sue Ann was a brilliant subversion of White's homespun public image.
The role of Sue Ann Nivens was not specifically written for White, but script #73 of the series ("The Lars Affair", originally aired September 15, 1973) called for an "icky sweet Betty White type". The casting director decided to approach the star herself, who with husband Allen Ludden was already good friends with Mary Tyler Moore and her then husband, MTM producer Grant Tinker. Producers were aware of Moore and White's friendship and were initially hesitant to audition White for the role, afraid of the awkwardness that might ensue if White wasn’t right for the part.
White played up Sue Ann Nivens' cheerful, home-and-hearth loving persona—a sharp contrast to the character's backbiting, sexually voracious true nature. Her first appearance in episode one of season four was intended to be a one-time guest role, but series creator James L. Brooks gave White a friendly post-show warning: "Don't make too many plans."

I get the feeling that White had a lot of fun sending up her public image, Brilliantly, though she subverted it - but did not destroy it. Everybody knew offscreen she was really sweet Betty White and not back-stabbing Sue Ann,

| by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 1, 2022 9:07 PM |
OP: I wholeheartedly agree. MTM is my favorite show of all time, and Sue Ann Nivens is one of the many highlights. Loved everyone and of course Betty White--and the show has held up remarkably well. I was just never a big fan of the Golden Girls. Yes, I liked them all. They were great. But from the very beginning, the GG character of Rose bugged me because she was so dumb. It just turned me off. I still watched GG now and then, but for me it wasn't 'must-see' TV the way Mary Tyler Moore was. I feel kind of bad saying that because how could I not consistently watch Bea, Rue, Estelle and Betty? I don't know, it just didn't turn me on all that much. And Betty's dumb character didn't appeal to me.
But Betty White as Sue Ann Nivens was everything. Funny, funny woman. Brilliant. I don't really even think of the GG and 'Rose.' In my mind, Betty White will always be the delightfully, biting, wicked and hilarious Sue Ann Nivens.
| by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 1, 2022 9:07 PM |
With Sue Ann Nivens, White had to be nasty, caustic, insincere, narcissistic yet be funny and have us on her side.
Not an easy thing for an actor to pull off.

Ellen Harper wasn't bad either.

When Sue Ann lamented about Phyllis slamming the oven door and ruining Sue Ann's soufflé, and then Sue Ann closes the oven door with her knee...and then Sue Ann continuing to mourn over the soufflé...even whacky Phyllis had to look at her crazily, confused and said unbelievably, "You're bananas."

Mary: "But Sue Ann, no one is here yet."
Sue Ann: "Mary, dinner is served."
and then later...
Mary: "Mr. Grant, you took half. Sue Ann only made six servings of the Veal Prince Orloff."
Lou: "You mean to tell me that's all we're having for dinner."
Mary: "Yes, Mr. Grant. You have to put some back!"
And an unknown Henry Winkler who came as Rhoda's uninvited date and had to sit alone at the little table by the living room window: "Could someone please pass the salt?"

I've told this one before but here it is again.
When I lived in WeHo, my neighbor was a costume/wardrobe guy. He was dressing Bea Arthur who was hosting the APLA event at the Wiltern Theater. I was tapped to wrangle Bea for an afternoon.
Long story short, Bea was a strange woman. Shy but caustic. I think she was still drinking.
My point is that one of the few things I got from that afternoon was that the real Betty was not very far from Sue Ann.
That made me love her more.

Betty White was supposed to be Blanche. Rue was supposed to play Rose. Rue asked to be cast, instead, as Blanche.
Betty White & Allan Ludden (husband) were friends of MTM.
I hated Betty as Rose. Boring! St. Olaf stories were interminable.
Loved Betty as Sue Ann. There were a couple of episodes where she went after Lou (sexually). Hilarious. Also hilarious were her back-and-forth snipes with Murray. Also loved the episode (mentioned above) where Sue Ann had an affair with Lars (Phyllis' husband) and used her knee to close the oven door.

One of the best episodes: Lou and Sue Ann fuck. Mary can't keep a secret and spills the beans to Murray.
Betty doesn't have much to do in it, but she steals every scene. Unshaven daddy bear Ed Asner looks hot as fuck. And he is devastating in his office scene with Mary
Mary: "Guess who Sue Ann Nivens spent the night with?"
Murray: "Come on, Mary! I have to be home in an hour!"

Loved that MTM "Lars" episode including the interaction between Betty's and Cloris's characters. "Phyllis" was always so pretentiously measured in the way she carried herself and spoke -- so that when "Sue Ann" really unnerved and flustered her, it was so much fun when Phyl finally let her guard down and told Sue Ann: "You're nuts!"

I've watched WAY too much television in my lifetime, but when asked my all-time favorite supporting character, my immediate response is Sue Ann Nivens. I think we even had a couple of DL polls. Sue Ann was always my pick.

My favorite MTM/Sue Ann episode was when The Happy Homemaker was canceled and Sue Ann was forced to take one humiliating job after another, and there wasn't anything she wouldn't do. She begged Lou to hire her, so to get out of it, he promoted Mary to "Producer", just so she'd have to deal with the responsibility of whether or not to hire Sue Ann. The episode's last line delivered by Ed Asner was one of the funniest punchlines the show ever delivered. I'll let someone else post it. :)

I know there are not many soap fans here (only a small dedicated group). And I generally dislike the soap Betty was featured on (Bold and Beautiful).
But she was fantastic on it. She played the mother of Stephanie (Susan Flannery), one of the few well constructed characters on the show, and played a dramatic story - we learned Stephanie was a huge cunt in part because her father had physically abused her, and Ann, Stephanie's mom, ignored the abuse.
Ann's disconnect and denial also influenced Pam, Stephanie's sister, who became a bit looney tooney and disconnected from reality in a more la-la-la I like blue sort of way.
She really could play ANYTHING.
And she won an Emmy. Deservedly (and it's rare to say that about Daytime Emmys).

Agree that the *office* set on MTM looked flimsy and cheap. But Mary's apartment looked great and was iconic.
Also, the GG house was better than the MTM office set, but I wouldn't say GG had great production values. Lighting was flattering to the Girls, yes. The GG house was really ugly, at times.

[quote]Sadly, fewer than you might imagine. The Mary Tyler Moore Show is much less remembered today than The Golden Girls. Is MTM even syndicated anymore?
R65. The Mary Tyler Moore Show" is the all-time best show ever on television. MTM is less remembered now because it was on in the 1970s and time marches on regarding fashion, sets, etc. The reruns have been played a thousand times over, and after a while every show cycles out of syndication. But the show still holds up as shown by the many YouTube clips. They are hilarious. The cast is unforgettable.
The Golden Girls are on top of people's minds because it was a show on in the '80s and '90s. But eventually GG will too cycle out of syndication and the next generation will forget and wonder what the big deal was all about with that show too. But I still maintain nothing beats MTM. For great acting, writing, directing and overall consistency.
| by Anonymous | reply 76 | January 2, 2022 8:17 PM |
[quote]The problem syndicating MTM is that the premise -- particularly the relationship between Mary and Mr Grant -- seems dated today, especially to younger generations. Also, while the show had incredible writing, it was short on production values. Visually it's just not a good show.
R66. MTM was syndicated for years and years. In fact for many years in the '80s, its reruns played twice nightly from 7-8pm before networks' regular primetime schedule began at 8pm. And it continued to play in reruns for years after that. Every show eventually goes off the air as will the Golden Girls at some point. Regarding your comment about younger generations today, younger generations don't set the standard that make a show great. For the most part, young people nowadays don't even watch shows from generations ago, and as time goes on, they will watch even less. MTM still holds up incredibly well.
The acting, writing and storylines of MTM transcend the sets, which by the way reflect a sign of the times. MTM is a landmark in television history, and will remain a classic. The relationship between Mary and Mr. Grant is just fine. So she called him Mr. Grant. It didn't and doesn't matter. Mary did not play "subservient" even though Lou was her boss. She was a woman of her generation, and Mary was very much an independent woman on par with her co-workers and friends on the show.
| by Anonymous | reply 77 | January 2, 2022 8:31 PM |
I love MTM Show and have all the episodes in my library. But certain aspects of it simply are dated. The relationship between Mary and "Mr. Grant" is dated, IMO. Also, Mary making coffee for the office (because she's the woman).
The Dick Van Dyke Show was before my time, but I have seen episodes of it.
Part of the problem, IMO, was that, at the beginning of the MTM Show, Mary (the actor) was still sort of acting like Laura Petrie, the little woman. E.g., the crying / hiccuping thing.

R80 Three’s Company is still hugely popular - even on IFC, along with Parks and Rec and far more recent shows.
Regarding MTM vs GG - 15 years ago (if were accounting for the time difference) MTM was already largely out of syndication circulation. And their DVDs didn’t sell well at all. Doesn’t mean GG is “better,” but it’s highly unlikely it will be forgotten in the same way. I’m sure it will still be popular in reruns 10 years from now.
Some shows are just more successful in that way than others.

MTM, I just rewatched the entire series, held up well. I like the simple sets. I was amazed that the show, 50 years later! Is still so effective and entertaining. The Mr. Grant still works because it reflects Mary’s upbringing and personality traits, awkward, overly polite, so I don’t find it offputting. Each character displayed insecurities which made the audience relate to them. Even Ted and Sue Ann’s egos showed their vulnerability. Love them, although I didn’t enjoy Phyllis as much as other characters.
