Everyone loves the funky synths but the lyrical narrative seem to imply a dangerous, delusional, and obsessive woman.

One of my favs from the 80s

Love this 💜
Remember living for this track in clubs in the 80s. I was underage, out with my older brother and loving it

This was a really good song.

I love this song. I remember them playing it on Solid Gold, and Darcel, the lead dancer, did an awesome dance routine to it in a gold lamé bodysuit.

All these years and for some reason I thought she was a White lady. Is it wrong that I like the song even more now?

It's one of the best songs ever. It sounded like nothing else on the radio back in 1983. It sort of invented the Miami Freestyle sound.

I luv me some freestyle. Great sound. Reminds me of summer. Still great beach music. Such a cool fusion of early 80s synth with latin influences and NYC/Philly club beats. They still do a Freestyle festival that tours every summer or at least until 2020

Her follow-up, Give Me Tonight, was also really good, and I believe it doesn't have the delusional and obsessive lyrics that OP is concerned about (though I haven't listened lately).

A classic, but it takes me back to my inept/successful cruising days in smoky gay nightclubs.

Shameless self promotion here, but I actually produce a weekly mixshow on SiriusXM Studio 54 radio called Get Into the Groove which is all 80's club music. Spans the gamut from disco to freestyle to house and everything in between. Lots of exclusive versions of classics that I produce (including Shannon's big hits). Very carefully curated and produced. It airs first run Fridays 11p E and replays Sun 11p and Tues 9p. After they air, I put them up on mixcloud, so you can listen there as well...thought you guys might enjoy!

It's a pretty typical pop theme: "I saw you dancing, I felt the chemistry and I know you felt it too".
It's only a stalker if they're ugly.

I love this remix of Give Me Tonight

Sierrah Foxx (RIP) was a freestyle DJ and Florida drag legend known for her bonkers Shannon megamix lipsync. Her "petit mal seizure" performing style was a big influence on Detox from Drag Race.

Another fan checking in. Do any crate diggers here know of any other tracks like this that pre-date the Miami scene?

I almost detect cowbell. Alas, I don't think so.

R11 thanks for the shameless self promotion. I've been listening to your mixes all day. Thanks for taking me back.

R11 GREAT SHOWS! They will be my new workout or wakeup music. Also you're hot.

I always understood the song to be about a woman who kept dancing after her partner moved on, knowing he'd be back.
| by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 19, 2021 8:03 AM |
I see it as a song about a woman trying to hold on to a guy that's unfaithful. More of an allegory than about actually dancing

Lyrics, schmyrics. It's a titanic fucking groove that slams as hard now as it did in '83. Timeless.

I loved her at the time but one of my black friends at the time HATED her and always called her "Tomato Face". Never understood the hate.

You don't get the full song, but you can tell her voice held up! A trip down memory lane.

r11 I love that channel - great production job. Did Studio 54 merge w/Utopia?

This song basically invented a genre, she’s a legend!
