This week, a disturbing video of Sam Smith being heckled in the West Village of New York City started to go viral.
In the clip, the heckler screamed, "You belong in hell! Sam Smith belongs in hell, you demonic twisted sick bastard."
"Leave the kids alone, you sick fucker. Sam Smith is a pedophile. Grooming the kids, you sick motherfucker, Sam Smith. You're evil."
In the video — which we won't show — Sam does not respond, but they appear to film the heckler.
This rhetoric that's directed at Sam — who recently came out as nonbinary — likely stems from the fact that, for the last few years, alt-right and right-wing media has promulgated the idea that LGBTQ — especially trans people, nonbinary people, and even drag queens — are groomers and pedophiles.
Sam has been open recently about the harassment they often face in the streets. "What people don't realize with trans nonbinary people in the UK is it's happening in the street," they told Apple Beats 1's Zane Lowe. "So, that was the hardest part, I think, was being at home in the UK and having people shouting at me in the street. Someone spat at me in the street. It's crazy."
Sam has not responded to the heckler or posted any footage of the incident, but we'll update you if and when they do.

I want to say this was staged because I don't think Sam Smith is easily recognizable. He looks like an average fat fuck.
But I live in the West Village and there are some crazy people who live there. I was sitting in the Hudson Park Library the other day. There was this old man yelling at the librarian. When you borrow a newspaper, like the New York Times, they ask to hold your library card. The librarian explained that people were stealing sections of the newspapers and that was a way to control the stealing. The old man was yelling that he didn't like the library keeping track of what he checked out and that it was against his privacy rights to do that. The librarian explained that the library doesn't keep records on what materials were used in the library. I was sitting there wondering what periodicals the library had that would be embarrassing to someone if there privacy was breached. Women's Wear Daily? Reader's Digest? Highlights for Children?

People who have years, even decades of training in the fields of education, sexuality, gender theory, psychology and so forth are he appropriate folks to determine at what age that sort of education is useful, timely and appropriate - not me.
I also don't tell them how or when to teach Math, English, Music, French or any other classes they might consider.
