I think Gerwig actually did get kind of shafted.
Robbie? Meh.
Gosling doesn't deserve his nomination either.
| by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 24, 2024 12:13 AM |
How did Ryan Gosling get an Oscar nomination? That is the question.
| by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 24, 2024 12:14 AM |
He had Oscar buzz since June of 2023.
Gerwig wasn’t shafted. The people nominated for Director are amazing. It’s STACKED. That’s a strong category.
| by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 24, 2024 12:15 AM |
To be fair, his acting was better than the women’s. It was still not good enough for an Oscar nomination though.
| by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 24, 2024 12:15 AM |
I’m willing to bet the only reason America Ferrera was nominated is to blunt any criticism about Barbie’s only acting nomination went to a man.
| by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 24, 2024 12:17 AM |
The praise for Ryan Gosling is hilarious because if you really study his performance, he plays the whole thing like, “Who gives a shit about this embarrassing movie?”
I don’t care what anyone says, nobody knew that this movie was going to blow up the way that it did. It could have gone either way. It’s a very thin line separating this “masterpiece” from total schlocky kitsch.
| by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 24, 2024 12:20 AM |
Robbie and Gerwig didn’t get snubbed, they just didn’t deserve to get nominated, and neither does Gosling or Ferrera. None of the Barbie crew deserves it.
| by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 24, 2024 12:21 AM |
Good for him. He’s a stand-up guy.
| by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 24, 2024 12:21 AM |
How do you know he's a good guy, R9?
| by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 24, 2024 12:22 AM |
Any time a best pic nom misses best director- it’s a bit off. But then Oscars matter about as much the shade of orange Trump sports on a given day.
| by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 24, 2024 12:28 AM |
I think it is an energetic and watchable performance.
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 24, 2024 12:28 AM |
The money Gerwig and Robbie are making is their prize. And his nomination is his. Not a chance will he win.
| by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 24, 2024 12:28 AM |
R10, I don’t know whether he’s a good guy, but I think he’s a nice guy.

I hope Ryan Gosling is circumcised.
| by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 24, 2024 12:30 AM |
R11 there are 10 Best Picture noms. There are 5 Best Director noms. At least 5 are gonna miss regardless
| by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 24, 2024 12:31 AM |
[quote] I hope Ryan Gosling is circumcised.
Why, R15? And why does it matter?
| by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 24, 2024 12:32 AM |
R17, because I prefer cut guys. And it would make him hotter, IMO.
| by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 24, 2024 12:33 AM |
R18 who gives a fuck what you “prefer”? You’ll never have him. Ever.
| by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 24, 2024 12:34 AM |
Everyone hates Greta and Noah. Cunts.
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 24, 2024 12:34 AM |
R18, considering you're never going to get near him, it's a strange thing to put hopes on.
| by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 24, 2024 12:34 AM |
I was surprised Barbie got an adapted screenplay nod since I thought an an adapted screenplay had to be based on an actual, concrete "work" like a book. So I figured maybe there were some Barbie books that Gerwig adapted (though I had never heard of Barbie books before). My friend told me that since the characters/IP already existed, that's enough. I didn't previously know that.
| by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 24, 2024 12:35 AM |
R19, I think you are taking this too seriously. We express our preferences all the time. I'm not delusional enough to think I am going to have Ryan Gosling.
| by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 24, 2024 12:35 AM |
I hope Ryan is uncut and has extra long foreskin. However, I pray he is not Zoroastrian, because that would be a dealbreaker for me. No thanks!
| by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 24, 2024 12:36 AM |
But why hope he's cut, R23? To fantasize about him? In a fantasy he can be whatever you want.
| by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 24, 2024 12:38 AM |
I rather like Ryan Gosling. I especially liked it when he laughed during the Oscars when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock. Everyone else looked horrified.
| by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 24, 2024 12:39 AM |
Cut/Uncut is of existential importance to the bitter unfucked and unfuckable elder gaycels of DL. Are you new here?

He probably thought it was a joke, R26.
| by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 24, 2024 12:40 AM |
R26 And he cracked up during the Faye fuckup at the Oscars. Bet he would be a fun fuck.

I posted what I thought was an unpopular opinion on Barbie after seeing it over Christmas: That it was crap. It turned out I wasn't alone.
There were serious problems with the screenplay and direction. Barbie was totally underwritten as a character; Margot Robbie had nothing to work with. The movie should have been called Ken, because Ryan Gosling walked away with the whole thing. America was a shrieking wet blanket. The movie did nothing with the other Kens, Allan, Skipper, or Will Ferrell. The screenplay seemed to have been rewritten and edited mercilessly to appease Mattel.
Greta and Noah Baumbach should be happy they got nominated for Screenplay and Best Picture; the movie didn't even deserve that.

America needs to loan Margot the Travelling Pants, for the good luck.

America Ferrera never saw "anyone who looked like her" on the big screen when she was a little girl. Aww for Christ's sake, shut up.
| by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 24, 2024 12:58 AM |
Just because Barbie made a lot of money doesn't mean Gerwig had to be nominated. The movie was a cartoon.
| by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 24, 2024 12:59 AM |
Barbra Streisand was snubbed as Oscar-nominee for director for 'Yentl' and 'The Prince of Tides,'--both more substantial movies than 'Barbie.
Sorry Gerwig. It happens.
| by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 24, 2024 1:02 AM |
I just know Gerwig is gonna milk this
| by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 24, 2024 1:03 AM |
Gerwig should have been nominated. The movie was original and very entertaining. Ryan Gosling was really funny in that role. I was surprised because I went into it thinking I'd hate him.

R39 I saw Central Station ages ago, and she was a fat spic like America.

And she wonders why she go snubbed for an Oscar.

So was Ken, R46.
If you put people or things in movies, you have to make them characters with interesting things to say and do.
Ken was. Barbie wasn't.
Gosling being recognized is about him being given a character to play while Margot Robbie wasn't—not sexism.

Not to be mean, but Hollywood is probably sick of Margot and Greta’s ridiculously precious speeches while holding hands and being best friends giggling and praising themselves and everyone else.

R48 Gosling had A LOT less screen time than Robbie. Please

This is true, but Barbie was, on a technical/production level amazing. Yes the story was "meh", the performances were "meh", but the whole movie came together to be more than the sum of its parts.
It is the Top Gun Maverick of 2023.
I think it deserved a directing nomination far more than any writing or acting ones, since the vision for this movie was ... something, and Gerwig delivered.

Ryan Gosling's naked butt in "Blue Valentine":

| by Anonymous | reply 55 | January 24, 2024 1:42 AM |
Everyone loved this movie and it cheered up the world—at least my world. And it made god know how much money. So who the hell cares if it doesn’t win Oscars. Barbie don’t care!
| by Anonymous | reply 56 | January 24, 2024 1:46 AM |
I didn't like Barbie, even though I thought I might before seeing it. That said, I have no problems with it getting noms.

Greta Gerwig - Writer, Adapted Screenplay
Greta Gerwig - Producer, Best Picture

I have gay co-workers who told me how much they hated this film and its non-stop screaming about the patriarchy but said not to tell anyone that they said so because they were afraid of being ostracized by their friends. I wish I was joking. The film is nothing but propaganda, shit straight out of a far Left gender studies course. It’s not there to entertain; it’s there to lecture.
| by Anonymous | reply 60 | January 24, 2024 2:34 AM |
Ryan Gosling has a sweet back view. The thighs are hot.
| by Anonymous | reply 61 | January 24, 2024 2:35 AM |
He's really bulging out too, unlike Ken.
| by Anonymous | reply 62 | January 24, 2024 2:38 AM |
R60 The movie also makes clear that a matriarchy doesn’t work either. Did your friends watch the whole thing, or just not pay attention?

He should apologize for ruining the movie. The Nicholas Cage of Kens.

People blaming white men for not nominating Gerwig, a woman, in director but they DID nominate a woman in director, Justine Triet for Anatomy of a Fall.

Ryan Gosling is gonna bottom his way into an Oscar win for this role. He's a hustler
| by Anonymous | reply 66 | January 24, 2024 3:17 AM |
What a fucking ungrateful spoiled brat. We are living in scary times. People are demanding that they be given things simply because of their identity. What ever happened to a little thing called meritocracy? Gosling hasn't had a hit in ages so I get why he probably thinks all his future projects will be hits or that Barbie's success was because of his contributions. His head is so far up his ass.
| by Anonymous | reply 69 | January 24, 2024 4:21 AM |
Gosling took 3 years off. It wasn’t even that he hadnt had a hit. He pretty much retired early and they had to convince him to come back.
| by Anonymous | reply 70 | January 24, 2024 4:24 AM |
If that piece of shit Barbie hadn't been a box office phenomenon, it would never have been considered an Oscar contender. Gerwig directed 3 films that were BP nominees and Barbie is the highest grossing film directed by a woman and she should be satisfied with that. It was a poor script, adequately directed with a bland lead character.
| by Anonymous | reply 71 | January 24, 2024 4:28 AM |

My god when will this end? Did Covid destroy brain cells? There are some awesome cinematic achievements in film nominated this year- and Barbie isn't one of them. It's a throwaway comedy in the vein of Pee Wee Herman, Clueless and American Pie.
Let's elevate our minds and aim higher?
| by Anonymous | reply 75 | January 24, 2024 11:27 AM |
I think the Barbie movie is creative and daring and since it was so fabulously successful for Hollywood, it seems churlish to deny the director an Oscar nod. I wonder why they did choose to deny it.
| by Anonymous | reply 76 | January 24, 2024 11:50 AM |
I didn't even get to America Ferrera's scene or I missed it. Probably won't finish the movie.
| by Anonymous | reply 77 | January 24, 2024 11:54 AM |
He was stuck between a rock and a hard place: he had to say something immediately in support of Robbie and Gerwig or he would have been accused of having benefited from their labor and supporting the patriarchal values the movie denigrates.
It is unsurprising but ridiculous to me that the protestors of the Robbie and Gerwig snubs seem to think people must be ideologically bound to nominate people just because of their movie's message.
