Yeah, Gosling really was a baffling choice for the role. Funny though, I can't think of a single current actor in the role. I'm thinking a Ted McKinley sort, with the chiseled face.

Trevor Donovan did a Barbie and Ken number in DWTS, I I don't find him particularly sexy but he has the "Ken" face, confidently, I never find guys who look like "Ken" sexy.

It’s a two hour movie so you can’t just have a beautiful airhead onscreen for that long. He’s not Olivier but he can carry a role. And he’s got a fanbase and name recognition. Maybe not a perfect fit, but I get it.
Robbie on the other hand looks like she was born to play Barbie.

His close set eyes have always bothered me. They would have been better off with the other Ryan if they wanted old.

Seems like they were looking for a name, which he is. What 20-something can they cast who has name recognition? Austin Butler is the only name who comes to mind and I think this was filmed before Elvis was released. I’ve been saying that this a great time for older performers, particularly actresses, because there are no new movie stars coming up. So they are casting older stars now. Not that he’s old, but for this role he might be.
