Roxane Gay cried while watching "The Whale"because she found it insensitive and de-humanizing
At several points, both my wife and I wanted to walk out of the screening, but we didn’t want to seem rude or oversensitive.

No, not Roxane!

I really hate her as she just hates everything. She just can’t find the positive in anything.

by Anonymousreply 1December 11, 2022 1:24 AM

She thinks the entire universe should revolve around her feelings.

by Anonymousreply 2December 11, 2022 1:25 AM

I'm impressed she wasn't too exhausted to attend a movie in person.

by Anonymousreply 3December 11, 2022 1:36 AM

To be fair, holding that jumbo bucket of popcorn was [bold] exHAUSTing![/bold]

by Anonymousreply 4December 11, 2022 1:37 AM

I can't imagine being so all-consumingly miserable as that lady is constantly announcing she is. Or, being married to someone like her.

by Anonymousreply 5December 11, 2022 1:39 AM

Wow Roxanne is such a joke. Btw, remember when Beyonce was asked which animal she would want to be, and she said, "a whale", with a serious face. 10/10 Funniest Beyonce moments.

by Anonymousreply 6December 11, 2022 1:43 AM

Our lady of perpetual exhaustion…

by Anonymousreply 7December 11, 2022 1:45 AM

Cannot stand this woman. Can we go a day without a thread dedicated to her sorry self?

by Anonymousreply 8December 11, 2022 1:46 AM

Brendan Fraser in THE WHALE looks like half of America now. Why is this supposed to be stunning and brave?

by Anonymousreply 9December 11, 2022 1:48 AM

Did Roxane make the comments closed again on the NYT website?

Do not engage these people EVER. Jezebel and New Yorker put out similar process yesterday and the responses are overwhelmingly negative towards the authors.

They whine that a 600 lb actor wasn’t cast and point out that Darlene Cates was over 500 lbs and she was cast in what’s eating Gilbert grape. For a me thing cates (who was fantastic in the movie) was a supporting character. The movie was focused on Depp and DiCaprio. Also cates played a woman who turned to food and became a shut in after the death of her husband-not a character that was happy with their circumstances. Frazer isn’t thin to begin with, and a realistically a 600 lb actor would be uninsurable as a lead in a multimillion dollar studio film.

Also, read between the lines in some of these opinion pieces. This hits too close to home and almost no one who has gone over 400 lbs is happy at that weight. Gay, Guy Barnum and others are on the defensive and in branums case is also professional jealousy.

These are the same people who become enraged when a “fat and fabulous” celebrity loses weight and says outloud what everyone knows- that they weee miserable being fat and they were using food to self medicate or the weight was causing serious medical problems. Then the biggest sin they admit they are happier being thin and healthy.

by Anonymousreply 10December 11, 2022 2:45 AM

She needs to be an SNL skit lol

by Anonymousreply 11December 11, 2022 2:50 AM

Would she even be a thing is she wasn’t black and a woman? Let’s be honest. Even a black man wouldn’t get the kind of attention she does. She just one big fat stereotype. It’s completely embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 12December 11, 2022 2:53 AM

The New Yorker just put out an insufferable woke piece a day ago. I finally had to unsubscribe to them. Enough is enough. NPR is also a trainwreck. Every day it’s yet another microagression story or how offended someone is. The state of journalism today is nothing more than infotainment.

by Anonymousreply 13December 11, 2022 2:55 AM

She’s had sufficient!!! 😠

by Anonymousreply 15December 11, 2022 3:06 AM

Maybe she cried because she was hoping to join its pod.

by Anonymousreply 17December 11, 2022 3:20 AM

She cried when she found out her Postmates order was refused at the doors of the theater.

by Anonymousreply 18December 11, 2022 3:37 AM

I still love that she complains at such length like this when she actually had the gall to write this for Oprah's magazine.

"The author of Bad Feminist liked to complain about her life. Until she realized that the only thing that needed a makeover was her attitude."

I can't believe she's not black.

by Anonymousreply 20December 11, 2022 4:19 AM

I can never trust this woman's reviews on things after she made a big deal about that show Insatiable, and after I watched the first season myself, I realised she actually had never seen it, just based her complaints over what she thought it was about.

by Anonymousreply 21December 12, 2022 7:44 AM

Can we please put Roxanne Gay, Jaclyn Moore, Lena Dunham, Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, Marjorie Taylor Greene, the entire Trump family (except Mary, Tiffany and Barron) and any of the other insufferable twat "celebs" into a rocket and fire it into the sun?

by Anonymousreply 22December 12, 2022 7:49 AM
Guy Barnum and others are on the defensive and in branums case is also professional jealousy.

Guy Barnum would have had to have worn a fat suit for the role, too, and he absolutely would have done so had he been offered the part.

There isn't a 600-pound actor who could have played this part, and this isn't a situation like "Shallow Hal" where they used a famously skinny woman in a fat suit as part of the joke, and also used a fat woman double and then pretended (as long as they could) that they didn't.

This is a case of a fat actor playing someone fat.

by Anonymousreply 23December 12, 2022 7:51 AM

People are bitching about Brendan Fraser wearing a fat suit as if there is a plethora of professional actors and actresses out there (aside from Chrissy Metz) that look like they belong on "My 600 lb. Life" or whatever the hell that show on TLC is called.

by Anonymousreply 24December 12, 2022 7:58 AM

Someone upthread mentions articles on Jezebel etc. The first comment on the Jezebel article is brutal, but I imagine very well deserved:
This is just Jezebel being their typical worst selves again...
First of all, Brendan Fraser isn’t thin anymore and would be considered somewhat fat by a lot of people (compared to his early days as an actor). He openly struggled with weight issues after on-set injuries made it difficult for him to be active, but sure, let’s just ignore his experiences entirely.
You then mention playwright, Samuel D. Hunter, who also wrote the screenplay... which is based on his own life as an obese gay man (who lost a lot of weight over the course of many years). And the problem with your narrative in regards to this, is the fact that it’s not just “fatness” it’s morbid obesity, which is absolutely a prescription for misery. Being 500-600 pounds creates a lot of physical, mental, and emotional issues that can’t just be brushed aside. How you’re able to not only acknowledge Sam Hunter’s vocal points about why he wrote this story, but still have the stupidity to say it was “made by non-fat people” is just so half-baked and brainless that I’m genuinely concerned about your short term memory... Did you re-read this after you wrote it or are you that daft in the head?

That's just a part of the response too.

by Anonymousreply 25December 12, 2022 8:00 AM

I note that on Twitter, Roxane is telling people: "Whatever. You can have your own opinion." and then when they disagree with her take on this film is telling them: "Shut up!".

Oh Roxy. Never change.

by Anonymousreply 26December 12, 2022 8:16 AM

I wish some lipstick lesbian would spread cyanide all over her cunt, seduce Roxanne and get her to eat it.

by Anonymousreply 28December 12, 2022 8:44 AM

I will just add that another reason I wish I hadn't read Roxane's review, besides her constant whinging about everything, is that it sounds like an incredibly depressing story. I feel terrible for Brendan Fraser's character already and I haven't seen it.

by Anonymousreply 29December 12, 2022 8:48 AM

A film about a 600-pound man has about as much to do with fatness as Schindler’s List did about the act of writing lists or Titanic did about boating. It’s a wilfully reductive and profound misreading of the film.

She has a fucking cheek to opine about an audience’s ‘necessary cultural literacy’.

by Anonymousreply 30December 12, 2022 9:05 AM

One of life's greatest mysteries is why anyone pays Ms Gay to spout her terrible opinions.

And I don't mean terrible because I might disagree with her. I mean terrible because the woman can't construct or defend an argument to save her life. She's nowhere near as intelligent or as well-read as she seems to think she is either.

by Anonymousreply 31December 12, 2022 9:12 AM
I wish some lipstick lesbian would spread cyanide all over her cunt, seduce Roxanne and get her to eat it.

I think it's great that a bunch of pre-teen boys have decided to post on Datalounge! They constantly talk about how they wish some celebrity they rarely think about was dead, and it's so fresh and innovative!

by Anonymousreply 32December 12, 2022 11:17 AM
She's nowhere near as intelligent or as well-read as she seems to think she is either.

I get the impression that she is actually quite intelligent, but she's so overwhelmed with resentment that she can't shake it off, and it permeates everything. She also has that really irritating quality a lot of university professors have, where they're insecure but also enormously egotistical, so they spout off as though they're right about everything they deign to show an interest in, and the second someone even HINTS at disagreeing with them, they emotionally withdraw and lash out.

by Anonymousreply 33December 12, 2022 11:20 AM

That is a good point, R33. Maybe she is more intelligent than I give her credit for, but she's just too lost in her own bitterness.

That egotistical university professor thing is so true! Always talking down to others. I always get the feeling she's insecure about her intelligence too, which is why she's always yelling at people not to give her advice, and acting like she's been actually wounded by someone kindly offering to help her out.

by Anonymousreply 34December 12, 2022 11:22 AM

I'd love her to find Datalounge and start posting here!

This place would make her the most exhausted she's ever been!

by Anonymousreply 35December 12, 2022 11:24 AM

People walk out of movie theaters all the time. It’s not considered RUDE unless the person loudly makes a speech about why they’re leaving and it takes them a long time because they are obese and unable to move quickly and quietly and block people from seeing the screen.

by Anonymousreply 37December 12, 2022 11:47 AM

What if they are also deeply exhausted and have to find somewhere to stop and have a rest on the way out R37?

by Anonymousreply 38December 12, 2022 11:56 AM

R38, that’s why Miss Gay didn’t get up and lumber out. Too exhausting.

by Anonymousreply 39December 12, 2022 12:10 PM
I'd love her to find Datalounge and start posting here!

If she doesn't lurk or anon-post here, I'll eat my hat.
