I wonder if it's actual performance in the market, which it obviously could be, or if sales are "fine" but somewhere along the way they took on more debt and couldn't deal with it. Or a hedge fund or other investors got involved who know nothing about cosmetics and acted based solely on manipulating the stock price.

No one buys Kylie Jenner or Jeffrey Star products. I've never seen either in shops. Just because someone says they are making money on Twitter doesn't mean they are actually selling anything.

I think people really do buy Rihanna's Fenty cosmetics, but I don't think it's anywhere near enough to sink Revlon. I really do wonder what happened. Where did Revlon fall on the low end to high end spectrum? Of did they have products at across the spectrum?
| by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 14, 2022 10:14 PM |
They have a high debt load according to this article. While the Revlon brand is well known and trusted, a lot of their other labels are no longer popular or relevant. Elizabeth Arden? Elizabeth Taylor? Mitchum? Those are brands that you see in Dollar General in the "gifts" section.

Revlon needed to back a few brands in the mid-luxury segment and they didn’t. They basically have Revlon, Elizabeth Arden and a couple of additional drugstore brands like Coty. This doesn’t cut it in the beauty market today.
| by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 14, 2022 10:28 PM |
I worked for Revlon back in the 80s when Ron Perelman bought the company he saddled the company with so much debt they almost went under. He tried to rob the retirement funds and almost bankrupted the fund but it was separated from the company and has been operated as a separate entity. I'll assume that the corporate debt has grown larger since e then.

They ruined their fragrance brand through inattention. Miraculously, Ciara (1973) has survived through all the reformulations and cheapening to still smell pretty damned good. Excellent, in fact. For 10 bucks or so. There is a Charlie or two that survived the reformulations intact. They used to make solid and popular fragrances and just gave up.
| by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 14, 2022 11:09 PM |

Elizabeth Arden, Britney Spears, Christina Agularia, Elizabeth Taylor, Mariah Carey still move fragrances. Britney Spears brand still introduces new fragrances. As I said above, Elizabeth Arden sells well - makeup and fragrance.

Elizabeth Arden beauty products are middle market and sold in department stores in Europe. Not cheap. But their clientele must be ANCIENT. They have several popular lines of fragrance that are good and inexpensive and not just for old hags. These lines introduce flankers every year. It must be a tough market, though.

Many average youngsters buy their fragrance at fast fashion shops especially Zara - and Zara's frags are good for them. LUSH sells frags. And there is all the low end designer stuff. Many celebrity frags aren't doing well apparently. The big money was perhaps a decade ago.

| by Anonymous | reply 50 | June 15, 2022 1:08 AM |
all ages are into Britney Spears. She's been around a long time. Her fragrances aren't jokes. Professionally "nosed" and were creative in each genre. The problem nowadays is forced reformulations are destroying a lot of heritage fragrances and often only the entirely newly composed fragrances made from the get go with the new, permitted molecules, smell good. Britney's "Fantasy" came out in 2005, a fruity gourmand - SWEET - and it was a best in class and smell good for that genre. Now, not so much. Ariana Grande has captured this genre with new fragrances based on new molecules - Cloud for example - very well respected and big seller. Not even cheap.
| by Anonymous | reply 52 | June 15, 2022 1:12 AM |
After Perelman bought the company he cheapened all the department store brands by allowing them to be sold in drugstores and middle level department stores the high end department stores kicked all the Revlon brands out which was very bad for sales and the brands image. Plus he sold off some of the more profitable brands such as Princess Marcella Borghese to help pay the the high debt load from his buyout. Consumers thought this brand was high end brand made in Italy but it was produced in the companies Phoenix, Arizona plant.
| by Anonymous | reply 53 | June 15, 2022 1:16 AM |
I buy some drugstore products and some funky stuff from Ulta and some department store products. Revlon is one of the most boring brands out there. They need some kind of image change, or some celebrity tie in, or something. Yes, lipstick sales must have dropped off almost completely. I stopped wearing foundation and blush and lipstick unless I have to be on Zoom for a parent teacher conference. Eye makeup is all that matters anymore.
Revlon hair color seems boring too. I really don't know what the problem is. Boring packaging? Not enough ads? I'm sure I could fix it if they hired me, but that won't happen.

I watch another "beauty" youTuber, Simplynailogical, and she has talked about this. Selling in drug stores is a money loser. Why would you want to give a cut to CVS/Walgreens when you can sell it online directly to your millions of youTube/Instagram/Tiktock followers? Especially since these followers will pay a premium because they are often frantically devoted.
You are incorrect, they are making enormous amounts of money.
| by Anonymous | reply 55 | June 15, 2022 1:26 AM |
They lost to better more dynamic cheap brands. Maybelline keeps it really young and fresh. And many products are good. So if you aren't satisfied with Maybelline and want to move up in price you go to designers that retained their lustre or you go to sexy newer brands than Revlon.

I'm looking for a vintage bottle of Red Door parfum. But I want to pay nothing, not 100 bucks. The class of people selling vintage online is deplorable. Liars and grifters. But this will come to me, one day, perhaps. I'll stumble over a bottle at some point.

Ariana Grande's perfumes have surpassed Elizabeth Taylor's in sales. Ariana's Cloud perfume is the best-selling perfume of all-time at Ulta Beauty, which is the biggest beauty retailer in North America. Ulta sells a bottle of Cloud every 11 seconds. And the rest of her perfumes are insanely popular. She also had the top 3 best-selling perfumes on Priceline in 2021.

Rihanna is now worth $1.7 billion due to Fenty Beauty. It's a huge seller.
Ulta Beauty said during last month's earnings call that they doubled sales due to the introduction of Rihanna and Ariana Grande's beauty lines and the Olaplex haircare line. Those beauty lines have helped Ulta surpass Sephora as the top beauty retailer in North America.

I buy mainly Sephora and Ulta make-up brands. Used to use revlon foundation, but I starting disliking the feel. There’s brands like NYX that are better and cheaper. Truthfully, the cosmetics industry is over saturated these days. I do use Revlon hair color 🙈 Not great, but it’s a habit. Even with that, I started to transition to using professional salon brands at home.

There’s a lot of competition even at the drugstore/low-end. Have used wet n wild, elf, Milani, NYX and they are competing strongly against higher-end brands. I personally buy foundation and powders at Sephora but will buy drug store brands for travel or when I forgot something. Revlon is not a brand I have considered though my friend swears by their lipsticks and glosses. There’s a lot of decent quality makeup in general (even Shein offers makeup now) so expect other brands to shut down if they don’t keep putting out new products.

This generation? LOL. Loud, tacky makeup was popular in the 80s. A lot of people getting plastic surgery are older
| by Anonymous | reply 78 | June 15, 2022 4:14 PM |
R77 is right. Make-up was always popular, yes, but teens and 20-somethings didn’t slop it on as much as that age group does today. YouTube make up gurus and also these influencers who’ve come out with make up lines like Kylie, JS, that other one whose name escapes me but was a sexual predator, etc... all have become multimillionaires off that demographic. Plastic surgery and fillers are also massive today, it was mostly unheard of for 20 years old to get PS except for nose jobs up until the 2010s. That’s why you have the Bella Haddads and Kylie Jenners who are 25 looking like 55. It’s not just celebs getting this stuff done.
| by Anonymous | reply 79 | June 15, 2022 4:40 PM |

| by Anonymous | reply 80 | June 15, 2022 4:44 PM |
So many men of all sexual identities are wearing makeup today. One of the reasons that Revlon is going bankrupt is that they never had male models in their ads. The more upscale makeup brands sold at Ulta and Sephora feature men in their ads. Beauty companies that don't market to the growing male makeup market are losing out on millions in revenue.
| by Anonymous | reply 81 | June 15, 2022 4:58 PM |
I don't think Revlon's branding or image has embraced the youth market like Maybelline, Covergirl and to some extent, L'Oreal, have. Clinique went hard after the youth market. EL, not so much but they are trying to stay in the "middle aged but relevant" range like Lancome has. They need to work on their image and branding for cosmetics. For haircare, I think Revlon's doing just fine with their Colorsilk and hair brushes/appliances.

R77 here. You would be surprised how many 20 year olds (men and women) get nose jobs, lip filler, and cheeks done. Sadly, the Kardashians influenced that a lot. Just go on the social medias, so many beauty/lifestyle influencers have those 3 “basics” done.
