The hat is stupid. He uses it as his "brand," his identity. But he's such a skinny, scrawny thing, he looks lost and goofy.

This reminds me of the British manager of Spinal Tap who carried around a cricket bat. Director Marty DiBergi (Rob Reiner) described it as an "affectation".
