Just this morning, I heard the name “Georgette Mosbacher”. Blast from the past.

I tried to read Tama Janowitz’s memoir about a year ago and I just couldn’t get through it. She is so dysfunctional, probably due to her insane and neurotic family. It started out as slightly entertaining by it reminded me too much of my HPD friend who’s an emotional vampire. Exhausting.

by Anonymousreply 59January 5, 2018 3:33 PM

^^ BUT it reminded me.

She also seemed to be coasting on her “Slaves of New York” success which was decades ago.

And she’s a terrible name-dropper.

R22, I know Haviland! Very nice woman. Class act.

by Anonymousreply 61January 5, 2018 3:38 PM

Haviland Morris should have had a huge career. She is so talented. She reminds me of Missi Pyle, who always steals scenes.

Haviland added that extra something to the standard girlfriend role in Sixteen Candles, was the best thing in the Madonna movie Who's That Girl? and she and John Glover stole all their scenes in Gremlins 2: The New Batch.

R69, I had an encounter with Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis in the late 1990s. I was in Regensburg, having lunch one Sunday afternoon in a restaurant's courtyard. There was an attractive woman with two good-looking younger guys. The woman's dog kept coming over to my table. I didn't mind. It was a friendly, little dog. Finally, she came over to get the dog and apologized. Told her it was no bother. My waiter (a nice-looking guy/ law student whom I was flirting with) told me who she was. And he indicated that she was not the most popular woman in town.

Her closeted husband, I believe, was dead by then.

In The Devil in The Nursery, Margaret Talbot for The New York Times summarized the case:

When you once believed something that now strikes you as absurd, even unhinged, it can be almost impossible to summon that feeling of credulity again. Maybe that is why it is easier for most of us to forget, rather than to try and explain, the Satanic-abuse scare that gripped this country in the early 80's – the myth that Devil-worshipers had set up shop in our day-care centers, where their clever adepts were raping and sodomizing children, practicing ritual sacrifice, shedding their clothes, drinking blood and eating feces, all unnoticed by parents, neighbors and the authorities.[4]

Some people mentioned arguably had their peak fame in the 80s, but continued to be featured in popular work beyond (Ralph Macchio in My Cousin Vinnie, Aidan Quinn in Elementary, Peter Scolari in Girls, Heather Locklear in Spin City and Melrose Place, etc.) So I don't associate them with only the 80s.

And 15 years later, the producers of that TV movie showed how to get AIDS when they produced that awful Showtime show with an anti-gay slur in its name.

r182, there used to be a clothing resale store in Santa Monica, Ca that had celebrity cast offs. There was a black filthy Azzedine Alaia (looked like she never wore underwear AND barfed around her dress) that was Nina Hagen's. The blond actress gal that hooked up with Paul Hogan (Now, THAT'S a knife!) had surprisingly great taste.

The man who popped my cherry on my first naval cruiser in1985. I was 19. He was 34 and married. Beautiful man with a tattoo of a heart on his hairy chest - with barbed wire around it. Silly me, I thought that he would leave his wife hahahaha! I was only sea pussy. But I still get hard at the memory of him and me in the supply storeroom, pounding my ass! My best eighties experience!

I loved the F/X movie as a kid! And I remember wanking furiously to Bryan in The Thorn Birds. Bryan's been working steadily all this time so I wouldn't exactly call him only an 80's phenomenon. That said he turned 40 already in 1987 so his stardom came a bit late.

Weird thread, especially as so many of the actors and actresses listed in this thread actually remained well known, and gainfully employed, way beyond the 1980s. They might not have become superstars or A-List, but many remained working performers. Especially the character actors and actresses. In fact, I saw Lauri Hendler on a TV One series, of all places, the other night!

How about a thread about people who were no longer remembered beyond the 1980s? Actual one hit wonders.

by Anonymousreply 360January 7, 2018 5:40 PM

R351 Im pretty sure Rachel & Bryan are/were married to each other.

by Anonymousreply 361January 7, 2018 7:26 PM

They are r361, Rachel Ward directs a lot more these days. Bryan is still doing movies although not necesarily big mainstream American ones. I think he does the occasional guest spot on American TV however. Their daughter Matilda is an actress too now.

by Anonymousreply 366January 7, 2018 9:08 PM

R366, No, anal is the person who keeps pointing out how so-and-so continues to work in such-and-such field/medium, regardless if you haven't heard about said person since their heyday.
