Oh look, Reddit's on strike today

Every community set to "private". As if that site wasn't absurd enough already.

by Anonymousreply 55June 14, 2023 11:21 PM

Oh look at op being a stupid ass again.

by Anonymousreply 1June 12, 2023 11:45 PM

Oh look at r1 being a stupid ass again.

by Anonymousreply 2June 12, 2023 11:48 PM

Good. If you haven’t been following, the CEO made really poor decisions regarding the third party apps API, doubled down on it, and blamed others while being nasty about it.

It’s also been brought to light how he moderated a very questionable subreddit in 2008.

by Anonymousreply 4June 12, 2023 11:53 PM

Absolute shit website full of shit stuff and people. They memory-holed Aaron Swartz, the IT genius who founded the place, after he took his own life.

by Anonymousreply 5June 12, 2023 11:55 PM

how will the neckbeards survive two days of reddit going "dark"?

by Anonymousreply 6June 12, 2023 11:57 PM

I don’t give a shit about the API. If people don’t like it, start their own Reddit.

But don’t be whiny crybabies. Fuck them. And their weakness.

by Anonymousreply 7June 13, 2023 12:02 AM

DL may be full of dysfunctionals, but at least it isn't full of outright nerds like that site.

by Anonymousreply 8June 13, 2023 11:59 AM

I’m not quite sure what the controversy is about, so I can’t speak to that. But Reddit is not “absolute” shit. I’ve joined some great communities related to my interests and experiences, filled with knowledgeable and courteous posters. While I expect there are mouth breathing degenerates to be found (of course there are) I only encounter them in communities I’d expect to encounter them in.

by Anonymousreply 10June 13, 2023 12:38 PM

R4, can you tell us about the controversies involving the CEO, the API and the controversial subreddit?

I like Reddit too. I just stick to subs that have few ignoramuses.

by Anonymousreply 13June 13, 2023 3:20 PM

I use Reddit a ton for the local travel areas and the music discussion. Those areas are in incredibly helpful, but I don't just browse Reddit generally.

I'm glad the subreddits are striking today.

by Anonymousreply 14June 13, 2023 3:26 PM

It’s a cesspit of sanctimony where upvote points are valued more than sincerity. I guess that’s social media in general.

by Anonymousreply 15June 13, 2023 3:31 PM

How’s Reddit really any different from any other aspect of the nest-of-angry-yellowjackets we like to call “modern culture?”

by Anonymousreply 16June 13, 2023 3:36 PM

I have a friend who comes here but spends more time on Reddit. When I asked him about it, he said he only lurks on Reddit and never posts. When I asked why, he said that while DataLounge has a few real cunts, Reddit posters are absolutely vicious and gang up on posters which the subreddit has decided don’t fit in.

More vicious than this “snake pit of trollery?” We’re losing our edge.

by Anonymousreply 17June 13, 2023 3:39 PM

Yes, I also wonder what the controversial sub-Reddit was?

by Anonymousreply 18June 13, 2023 3:40 PM

It was the pasta draining that tore them apart

by Anonymousreply 19June 13, 2023 3:45 PM

The fact that what drove this is finding out that Chat GPT was mining reddit for responses explains so much about the issues with ChatGPT. Reddit is pretty racist, people are rude with no filter. It's basically the main meeting place for internet trolls and people who spend their lives gaming in their parent's basements. And the designers of ChatGPT thought- hmmm let's direct this new database to Reddit to figure out how to assimilate proper responses to queries. Yeah, that's gonna work out.

by Anonymousreply 20June 13, 2023 3:53 PM

[quote]It’s a cesspit of sanctimony

Perfect description.

by Anonymousreply 21June 13, 2023 4:10 PM

[QUOTE] Why is Reddit absurd?

Hard to post or navigate for new users. Stupid "karma" rules. Circle jerk hive mentality where people kiss each other's asses and say the "right" things to get upvotes.

by Anonymousreply 22June 13, 2023 4:35 PM

This "strike" won't change anything. They'll just be back tomorrow, and it will be business as usual.

by Anonymousreply 23June 13, 2023 4:51 PM

Reddit is the only "social media" I use outside of DL. Sure, it's probably 90% full of shit like everything online, but it's great for following specialised interests and getting info, news about certain things.

by Anonymousreply 24June 13, 2023 4:53 PM

At least on Datalounge you get called out for being full of shit, for lording over people with your fake, internet-only morality/ethics. It's amazing how everyone on Reddit is an environmentalist, a perfect parent, a very intelligent and hard worker, and is unfailingly kind to all strangers, yet they still have time to rush over to Reddit and wax poetic about life. How can that be?

Oh, the other thing that drives me up the fucking wall about these people is, when they 'slip up' and say or do something that is incongruent with the pretend ethics of other Redditors-- say they post a picture of their food and-- whoopsies-- they forgot to put it on a real plate instead of a paper plate like they use and throw away every day, and someone tut-tuts them for it, the go-to defense is to reverse-shame the other idiot by announcing post-haste that they're suffering from some alphabet soup "diagnosis" such as ADHD, PTSD, OCD, Depression, Aspergers, Autism, and they only wish they could use real plates but they are so hindered and handicapped by their diagnosis that they can hardly get out of bed to come post on Reddit, and how very dare the other dingdong call them out and not check their mental health privilege! Then everyone downvotes the caller-outer and upvotes the phony who blamed their self-ascribed mental health woes. That's just one example, they are many.

Someone else here can articulate this phenomenon better than I.

by Anonymousreply 25June 13, 2023 5:31 PM

I guess because I only look at my favorited subreddits, I don't see anything controversial or bad there. I nearly am only looking at travel, alternative music, and genealogy sections - and no one is ever racist or off the chain, or at least I haven't seen it, luckily.

by Anonymousreply 26June 13, 2023 5:35 PM

Oh and EVERYONE there suffers from crippling anxiety, that's just a given, goes without saying.

by Anonymousreply 27June 13, 2023 5:35 PM

It depends on the subreddits you use.

I find it very helpful, in general, and learn a lot. I WAS banned from commenting on the Portland subreddit for thoughtcrime against our drug-abusing mentally Ill homeless population, though.

The native app does kinda suck (although I grin and bear it and don't use Apollo).

by Anonymousreply 28June 13, 2023 5:40 PM

I was excoriated for my racism when I mentioned the issues gypsy panhandlers were causing on a major thoroughfare.

by Anonymousreply 29June 13, 2023 5:43 PM

I was permanently banned from Reddit for “hate speech.” The crime? Daring to express my opinion as a gay man that nonbinary identity is nothing but attention seeking silliness.

by Anonymousreply 30June 13, 2023 5:44 PM

Can / Will someone explain to me what all the fuss is about? Reddit doesn't charge subscribers. They make their money from ads. Since subscribers aren't paying, why are they up in arms about third party applications for accessing / using the site?

I have three - four subs that I follow for my local area, and personal interests. It's been really frustrating the past two days.

by Anonymousreply 31June 13, 2023 5:47 PM

Reddit is owned by Advance Publications, which owns Condé Nast and a great deal of “local” newspapers. Redditors treat it like it’s some kind of holistic antithesis to Facebook and mainstream media, when in fact it’s owned by one of the biggest propaganda machine companies in America.

It blows my mind that the insanely wealthy owners of Reddit allow it to be one of the internet’s biggest porn receptacles without caution. Shit, they let everything slide on there. Reddit’s API protest should lead to somebody else making a much better, non-corporate Reddit replacement that in fact follows the values of the left-wing Reddit neck beard loser. There’s enough crypto bros on r/WallStreetBets to afford it!

by Anonymousreply 32June 13, 2023 5:48 PM

Everywhere on the internet is filled with horrible people out for blood anytime someone posts something they don't like. Reddit is no different, but it's hardly the worst offender. That would be Twitter under Musk.

Reddit skews left unlike most social media, so it's pretty suspect when someone singles them out for behavior that is worse on sites dominated by conservatives.

by Anonymousreply 33June 13, 2023 5:51 PM

By the way, I am a longtime Reddit surfer, but I do most of my posting here. I do not like Reddit’s very cringey comment section, a whole boatload of self-righteous people who think their opinion is right, no matter what topic. It’s the very stuff that makes top world leaders question the viability of a democracy.

by Anonymousreply 34June 13, 2023 5:51 PM

[quote]a whole boatload of self-righteous people who think their opinion is right, no matter what topic.

So, it's DL?

by Anonymousreply 35June 13, 2023 5:54 PM

Reddit has some great places for individual tv shows and movies. I followed a Picard subreddit during the third season and it was a nerd fest, but great. There’s also a geography subreddit that I like. Stay away from the political forums and you’re good.

What subreddits do you visit? I honestly don't see anything like that, granted I'm in a 'sheltered' view of a handful of very specific subreddits.

by Anonymousreply 37June 13, 2023 5:59 PM

R31 here - I just found an article detailing Reddit's plan to charge for API use, so I'm up to speed.

by Anonymousreply 38June 13, 2023 6:07 PM

This thread has talked me into trying reddit... yet again. I just can't get used to the format. Datalounge is so easy and aesthetically pleasing.

by Anonymousreply 39June 13, 2023 6:10 PM

Good video on the subject:

Eh. The weed forum there sucked. Too many people making unfunny jokes, not enough pot pictures or strain reviews.

by Anonymousreply 41June 13, 2023 6:58 PM

R41, r/vaporents was honestly my preferred weed subreddit. But I'm also not one for combusting copious amounts of pot. None at all anymore.

by Anonymousreply 42June 13, 2023 10:32 PM

The place is a palace of idiocy and exclusiveness for like-minded idiots.

by Anonymousreply 43June 13, 2023 10:55 PM

All the good reddit porn is set to private today. This is gonna shit the bed like Tumblr. : (

by Anonymousreply 44June 13, 2023 11:02 PM

R33, so because conservative sites are worse (duh), anyone who says Redditors are a bunch of crybaby bitches about everything is a Trumper?

That logic is right out of the conservative playbook, and it isn’t serving us well. Not everyone who isn’t in lockstep with your every viewpoint is a nazi or a fascist.

by Anonymousreply 45June 13, 2023 11:04 PM

Reddit is a worse online experience than Datalounge and Twitter combined.

by Anonymousreply 46June 14, 2023 12:29 AM

I created an account to participate in the discussions about Below Deck and those people on Reddit bored me so much I stopped watching show.

by Anonymousreply 47June 14, 2023 12:32 AM

Oh no! My cat subs have gone dark! (Admittedly cat pictures are what I mostly like reddit for. Intelligent or engaging discussion, nope.)

by Anonymousreply 48June 14, 2023 12:33 AM

[quote] Too many people making unfunny jokes

Have you read posts here at DL before?

by Anonymousreply 49June 14, 2023 12:39 AM

[quote] Reddit is a worse online experience than Datalounge and Twitter combined.

DL is way more fun but I'd much rather read most Reddit subreddits (aside from obvious rightwing/incel BS) than wade back into the cesspool that IS Twitter.

by Anonymousreply 51June 14, 2023 3:07 AM

Oh dear. Now I won’t be able to watch any woke circle jerks with lesbians complaining about how no one will respect that new gender identity they just assumed 5 minutes ago.

by Anonymousreply 52June 14, 2023 3:22 AM

[quote][R33], so because conservative sites are worse (duh), anyone who says Redditors are a bunch of crybaby bitches about everything is a Trumper?

Stop putting words in my mouth, troll.

by Anonymousreply 53June 14, 2023 3:31 AM

If Reddit doesn't come back, few will even notice.
