The people on the submersible were probably already dead from the moment communications were lost. There’s an emergency mechanism onboard to surface which wasn’t activated, which means there was probably a hull breach followed by everyone being crushed to death in very short order.

Some guy they interviewed, who had taken one of the first one of these things, said that if they lose communication, they're supposed to immediately let go of the ballast (or something like that) which should hve made the thing float to the top like a helium balloon. So he thinks there was some kind of disastrous equipment failure and they might have died on the way down.
I didn't realize the kid on there was 19. The Pakistani billionaire's son. Oh well, Cameron Robbins is there to welcome them to Davy Jones' locker. And all those poor nameless migrants.

Oh and the guy said the mechanism to let go of the ballast was a simple lever. He hoped they hadn't gone high tech with it and if the digital apparatus failed, then it wouldn't work.

Actually the owner of the company designed the comms system to disable after a certain depth because he didn’t like the repetitive check-ins on static he got from his nervous, youthful employees. The dropping of comms was a regular part of these trips.
They are supposed to hear back starting 10 hours after launch. When they didn’t hear back 12 hours later, they called the coast guard.

They have been dead. If the sub didn't implode they would have died from hypothermia long before they ran out of oxygen. Those waters are freezing cold and they had no power therefore no heat.
