This looks like a warzone... it wasn't all that long ago. Are these days soon to return?

Why does it look like a garbage dump? Please explain this level of urban decay to a non-New Yorker.

R1, many landlords would just light their properties on fire in those days to collect the insurance and move out to the burbs since they saw the entire area turning into a shithole.

White flight helped bankrupt the city. Red lining. Overt corruption ruled. Also, the GI Bill provided subsidized mortgages, and since the majority of healthy men back then were in either WWII or the Korean War, they took advantage resulting in many middle class families leaving the Bronx for greener pastures. Also, Robert Moses and his zeel for destroying communities by slapping highways through them (another incentive for moving to the suburbs. you could now drive to work in the city on said highways).
Lots of stuff, really.

I remember driving the Cross-Bronx Expressway during that period, and there were always burned out shells of cars along the side of the road. I was always relieved when I got past that stretch of road.
| by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 4, 2021 4:03 AM |
R2 and R4 pretty much covered it. You certainly couldn't build anything like the Cross Bronx Expressway today. It's a monstrosity. Psychologically, that turns the neighborhood into somewhere you drive through, not somewhere you live.

Some of the best, most memorable and seediest Latino Fan Club vids were filmed in areas like these during LFC's early years. Sex scenes shot in abandoned buildings and late at night in some of the lesser frequented subway stations gave them an authenticity that was lacking in the later years, when so many of his vids were shot right there at LFC headquarters. Director Brian Brennan's guerilla filmmaking—filming on location without a permit or approval—got harder and harder to pull off after Giuliani cleansed the city so thoroughly.

White flight is nothing but a survival mechanism. Nobody wants to run away from the community they built, and that their grandparents and ancestors helped build.
White flight is always directly the result of black violence against whites. If white flight people were REALLY racist, they would simply attack or kill any black person who moved into the neighborhood.
Blaming white people for blacks destroying everything they touch is pure anti-white racism.
1982 South Bronx looks no different from Detroit, Baltimore, or any city in Sub-Saharan Africa not built and maintained by whites.

Remember last year when Michelle Obama blamed white people leaving for her neighborhood turning into a violent black ghetto?
But if whites had stayed and clamped down on black crime, Michelle and her family would have chimped out at the white supremacy of it all.
Imagine being white and wanting to stay in South Chicago. Even blacks don't want to live there. Too many blacks.

Chicago's final 2020 score
719 shot and killed ( up 55% )
3455 shot and wounded ( up 51% ) and
792 total homicides ( up 53% ).
7 shot and killed by police, 13 wounded

Blacks beg for free housing, then promptly destroy their free housing, then leave their free housing, then demand that their free housing be demolished, at great expense, because it is uninhabitable, an eyesore, and infested with gangs and drugs.
All of this is insanely expensive, and ultimately unsustainable, because the cycle always repeats itself.

It always pisses me off when whites refer to "blacks" in terms of the lowest common denominator. We're not some monolithic group with the same values, belief systems, and morals. When people refer to blacks in negative terms it's usually the black lower/underclass. There are many, many productive, peaceful black people who work, pay taxes, cut their grass, and don't rob, rape and murder. Most of us to be honest. But everyone focuses on a small subset of culturally deviant, generationally cursed group of black people who committ most of the crime. And the rest of us are lumped with this minority. And r4 was right -- the people left in the South Bronx were poor and underclass and didn't have the means of improving their lot.
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 4, 2021 4:29 PM |
r20 quit lying. Over 50% of black families are on welfare. 75% of black kids born out of wedlock. 50% of 23 year old black males have a criminal record. 48% of black women have herpes. 48% of black kids drop out of high school.
In all this anti-white madness over the last year, where white businesses have been targeted and burned down nationwide, I haven't heard heard much more than a peep from the black community about these out of control fatherless black criminals being super-racist towards whites (and Asians).
The black community will unite over every George Floyd thug who had it coming, but they will never unite against bad moms, absent fathers, and gang bangers who run most black neighborhoods.
You deserve much more scorn than you get.

Ford refused to bail out NYC and it entered a terrible depression. That depression lead to the city not able to fund the inner city areas (which only got worse with Reagan's tax cuts).
The economy commenced a steady incline with Clinton. Giuliani and Bloomberg were able to capitalize on the improving economy

I know three black doctors who graduated from ivy league schools. They certainly have never begged for free housing

Yup, extreme poverty causes violence.
According to the GOP, when people shoot others, they need better mental healthcare. Maybe that's what Chicago needs to do--offer better mental healthcare, right?

On the other hand, had the Bronx not had such a bad reputation, many of us would not have been able to afford three bedroom / two-bathroom co-ops (with a view of the park and a doorman) in Riverdale or two-story semi-detached residences in Woodlawn..

Which was worse back in the 70s/80s, Harlem or The Bronx? I read a statistic years ago that even in the early 90s, people in harlem had an average life expectancy similar to that of people in Bangladesh. The extremies in our country are nuts.

No, nothing in NYC looks bad as South Bronx back in the day. Not even the East Village which was arguably almost if not just as bad.

R40, I've seen footage of some of the houses that have replaced some of those buildings and they look pretty bland and suburban. Mid-level/middle housing is always better looking than some single-family home.
