New NBC Sitcom About a Gay 15-Year-Old.

Somehow I don't think this is going to go over too well.

Looks awful, but the roommate guy looks hot. I think he's the guy from The Mick who died in an unfortunate sauna accident.

I saw the ad for it on tv and the gay kid "comes out" and the two dudebros go "yeah we know you're gay - you talk gay" or something like that.

I am surprised there hasn't been hysterical screeching about that yet. I can't find a clip online anywhere. The screechers generally have cut the cord, so if the clip isn't online then they probably can't see it in order to get offended.

by Anonymousreply 4January 28, 2018 3:33 AM

I'm taking a "wait-and-see" on this since I liked [italic]The Office[/italic] but never watched [italic]The Mindy Project[/italic].

by Anonymousreply 6January 28, 2018 3:35 AM

Wasn't this show already cancelled by ABC?

by Anonymousreply 7January 28, 2018 3:38 AM

That was [italic]The Real O'Neals[/italic]. This is different. This is something unconnected to either Disney or Dan Savage.

by Anonymousreply 8January 28, 2018 3:40 AM

The guy who plays the younger brother is the brother of Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau (not the director.) He also looks a lot like a younger James Van Der Beek.

by Anonymousreply 9January 28, 2018 4:11 AM

Eww he is, r9? Skipping this show based on that connection alone.

by Anonymousreply 10January 28, 2018 4:39 AM

Why, R10? What a weird reaction.

by Anonymousreply 12January 28, 2018 5:01 AM

Cancelled by St. Patrick's Day.

by Anonymousreply 13January 28, 2018 7:54 AM

Is this a 'how to get Trump voters to accept the LGBTees' move?

by Anonymousreply 14January 28, 2018 9:53 AM

"Created by Mindy Kaling"...Hard pass.

by Anonymousreply 15January 28, 2018 10:36 AM

Well, it's different. It's not the same 6 white friends in the big city with their token minority friend/partner. Or fat husband, skinny wife with kids. I'll watch but it probably won't last a season.

by Anonymousreply 16March 2, 2018 8:22 PM
but the roommate guy looks hot

Like a proper gay, that is the first thing I noticed.

Still won't watch it.

by Anonymousreply 17March 2, 2018 8:25 PM

Last night when I exited Netflix I accidentally tuned into one of the late night shows with the kid who stars in the show. I missed the introduction I honestly could not tell for certain if this was a guy or girl. Seemed like a darn smart young person but incredibly femme in voice and manner. This might go over better on CW instead of NBC.

R18 I saw that interview, too. He's 16 and said that when he was younger he wanted to be Wendy Williams when he grew up.

by Anonymousreply 19March 2, 2018 9:03 PM

"he wanted to be Wendy Williams"

He can soon. He can just slide into her corpse's skin and be a black trans.

by Anonymousreply 20March 2, 2018 9:09 PM

Generally, shows coming on this late in the season are time fillers and will be sent to the failed series graveyard. Also, gay inclusive shows seem to be fading in the era of Trump.

by Anonymousreply 21March 2, 2018 9:36 PM

by Anonymousreply 25March 2, 2018 10:21 PM

JJ Totah is 16. People are so used to seeing hot 20-somethings play highschoolers that I think they forget how young a lot real highschoolers look.

by Anonymousreply 26March 2, 2018 10:26 PM

They need to cast someone a lot older to play the 15 year old.

by Anonymousreply 27March 2, 2018 10:34 PM

I'll definitely give it a try.

by Anonymousreply 33March 2, 2018 11:41 PM

That kid is indeed a walking flaming stereotype. The type of character that is done so straight douchebags can laugh at him for being too much of a "fag."

God, this is fucking 2018. By now networks should treat gay people as more than caricatures. As sad reminder of Trump's America for sure.

by Anonymousreply 52March 4, 2018 11:27 PM

This kid apparently not being amongst them. This shapes up as "Young Jack McFarland", following the trend of "Young Sheldon".

by Anonymousreply 54March 4, 2018 11:36 PM

Mindy Kaling is one of the luckiest women alive.

by Anonymousreply 56March 7, 2018 10:01 PM

In real life, there are a lot of kids just like him

by Anonymousreply 57March 7, 2018 10:16 PM

I'm sort of effeminate myself but I hate this. This is the kind of character that is made to attract a certain type of young female viewer, not to serve as a role model for young gay or bi boys. Gay men are not necessarily effeminate, and if they are, they are not necessarily smart aleck types with a talent for theater. I myself am not.

It is in part due to the fact that the gay male characters are so stereotyped that so many men avoid coming out. Compare this to the way gay or bi women are depicted - any woman, according to pop culture, can turn out to be gay, but only a very precise kind of man will turn out to be non-straight.

by Anonymousreply 58March 7, 2018 11:00 PM

by Anonymousreply 60March 7, 2018 11:12 PM

But isn't normalizing gay characters a good thing? All right, he's over the top but don't you want Joe and Betty Sixpack to see gay kids as just folk. Putting gay characters in network sitcoms is a great way to reach regular Americans (deplorables) since you're not going to reach them in any other medium.

by Anonymousreply 61March 7, 2018 11:32 PM

Did anyone notice that in the most recent episode of SNL (Charles Barkley), they did a sit about a fake TV show called “Champions”?

I thought it was an odd choice for an NBC show to make when the network is currently trying to launch a show with the same title.

by Anonymousreply 62March 7, 2018 11:40 PM

Another exploitative gay minstrel show.

by Anonymousreply 63March 7, 2018 11:57 PM

r61 But they could also do that with a more toned down gay character. Why does it have to be one step forward and two steps back when it comes to gay representation?

Imagine if they had Black Panther talk like Antoine Dodson. There no doubt would follow a backlash from Black people. Would you tell Black people in this situation that "at least there's a Black hero movie"?

by Anonymousreply 64March 8, 2018 12:34 AM

They already have Black Panther talk in this stereotypical accent throughout.

by Anonymousreply 65March 8, 2018 12:45 AM

by Anonymousreply 69March 9, 2018 1:06 AM

I disagree with those who don't like the character. I think it's important to show you can be fem without being interested in transitioning. That's an important message to get out in today's climate.

I always marvel over shows that hang their hat on a kid who has one, maybe 2 seasons of cuteness before entering that wretched tween / teen phase. It ain’t gonna be pretty with the protagonist here.

by Anonymousreply 80March 10, 2018 9:44 AM

Gay men sneering at a kid character for not being manly enough doesn't fucking help any gay kid. Or adult for that matter.

No wonder so many 'flamer' boys grow up with mental health and self esteem problems. .

[Yes, I know its a fictional character]

I mean...really? This a sitcom about a 15-YEAR-OLD child. The fuck is wrong with you people?

This show wasn’t created to satiate your selfish desires for “Accurate” representation of the gay community. If anything... it’s pretty fucking accurate. The question is...why are you acting like it’s not? This kid talks and acts like most gay 15-year-olds. You can pretend like the opposite of this character is so pervasive that Trump’s America will FINALLY accept us if they could just see it on their screens but NEWSFLASH...they already have. It’s been done.

Stop embarrassing yourself with this shit. They’re NEVER going to accept you. Acceptance is NOT in their character.

Nolan Gould should be his boyfriend who introduces him to the pleasures of gay sex.
I always marvel over shows that hang their hat on a kid who has one, maybe 2 seasons of cuteness before entering that wretched tween / teen phase. It ain’t gonna be pretty with the protagonist here.

That happens on all shows. The Home Improvement kids all went in different awkward directions. Brad from Horsin' Around grew to be such an ugly teen with a goatee. Even Sarah Lynn looked awkward and gangly at that age.

by Anonymousreply 84March 10, 2018 12:19 PM

"Wouldn't it be great if there were shows where the black people were played by super super super light-skinned African-Americans? So it wouldn't seem so stereotypical and they could blend in more?" That's what some of you sound like.

I really enjoyed the pilot and everyone in it. I'm gonna watch til it's cancelled, which it probably will be. I really liked the Real O"Neals" too.

by Anonymousreply 85March 11, 2018 1:23 AM

I would've loved a sitcom like this when I was a kid. Just a break from everything on tv assuming every kid is straight, would've been nice.

by Anonymousreply 87March 11, 2018 10:46 AM

R82, it’s just homophobia. There’s a certain type, maybe a certain generation of gay man that hates himself and sees EVERYONE ELSE as an extension of themselves - in their minds, other people are not allowed to be themselves, they have to be the homophobe’s ideal of what gay men and gay people should be which is inevitably not to be at all perceived as gay. It’s a kind of wounded narcissism that can’t separate itself from anyone else, with very low self-esteem.

by Anonymousreply 88March 11, 2018 1:46 PM

I watched it today and didn’t think it was so bad. I loved The mindy project. It was a little light on laughs but reviews say it gets better in the second episode. And if the kid is a flamer- who cares? A lot of gay men are this way and the kid is talented and that’s what he actually is like in real. I hope it’s a success.

by Anonymousreply 89March 11, 2018 2:42 PM

I just watched it and thought it was fantastic (and I rarely say that about any sitcom these days). Of course, that means it probably won't last. I'm sure NBC will do everything in its power to save the horrible "A.P. Bio" before they save this one.

by Anonymousreply 90March 11, 2018 4:40 PM

Andy Favreau also guested on Will & Grace a couple of weeks ago playing the son of a man sexing up Grace. He was also doing her as did his granddad who was one of Grace's profs back in her college days. Yep she had sex with all three generations two of which were current. And Barry Bostwick played the granddad!

by Anonymousreply 103March 12, 2018 6:35 AM

We need more effeminate boys to be represented in the media. I'm more upset that some trashy Gaga played in the background like that has anything to do with being gay. There are so many actually gay artists to pick from.

My original choice to play Freddy Mercury.

by Anonymousreply 105March 12, 2018 12:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 107March 12, 2018 7:36 PM

Watched the second episode, and I'm out. I just don't care about the gym and the people who work there (especially the yelly lesbian), just the gay kid (whom I would totally side-eye in real life, but that actor really sells it) and his hot uncle. This flaming kid is nothing like the gay teens today. Whoever says this is an eldergay out of touch with the times.

Most of my 14 year old nephew's friends are regular boys and most are no labels kinda kids. That's the norm today. They find my being gay limiting and annoying.

The rare flaming teens today are horrible mean girls with this empowering bullshit and kids are not having it. My nephew and his friends loathe the catty queens.

A novelty would be a femme kid who's not into musicals and being witty, but a kind and sensitive type like one of my nephew's friend, Gabriel a mathlete I thoroughly enjoy interacting with. He's openly gay and his friends love him.

The line of sexuality for today's teens is totally blurred, which makes this character even more outdated.

by Anonymousreply 119March 26, 2018 6:04 AM

I'm certain Dan Savage would be happy to guest star and "mentor" this confused young gayling.

R125 any talent writer will create a great show on current people and topical events, that's what makes good comedy and art.

Mediocre writers create shows like this relying on decades old tropes and stereotypes.

Actually this show needs to improve a lot to even reach mediocrity.

by Anonymousreply 128March 26, 2018 3:02 PM
any talent writer will create a great show on current people and topical events, that's what makes good comedy and art.

Nobody is in the movie business to make GOOD comedy or art. They are in the business of making "candy everybody wants" kind of comedy and art. Tired, old tropes audiences know and are used to laugh about / at.

HBO's Looking was branded as boring and too subtle and not funny, because it was too normal. To this day what keeps people watching is over the top characters getting into over the top shenanigans (or make it like like these situations are over the top).

by Anonymousreply 129March 26, 2018 3:08 PM

(or make it LOOK like these situations are over the top).

by Anonymousreply 130March 26, 2018 3:09 PM

He was hilarious in a classic 2 broke girls, where max referred to him as baby anderson cooper. Good times.

by Anonymousreply 131March 26, 2018 3:09 PM

A talented writer would make this boring show into a generation clash between a son who can't fit labels of the past and the dad's inability to deal with his fluidity for instance.

Channel 4's Cucumber from Russel T Davis did this to funny results presenting a 40something gay who lived a repressed gay life trying to deal with his supposedly straight nephew kissing guys on YouTube for views and being all cuddly with his equally no labels friend to fantastic comedic effect.

Then again Davis is a talented writer.....

by Anonymousreply 132March 26, 2018 3:11 PM

R129 As someone who watches shows from all over the world for a living I have to say you don't know what you're talking about. There's plenty of very popular TV made with artistic bent, ranging from recycling old tropes with talent writing to surprisingly innovative storytelling.

I want this show canceled. No more archaic effeminate clown portrays of gay dudes.

by Anonymousreply 137March 27, 2018 12:25 PM

R129 Fuk off Jason Katims!!

by Anonymousreply 139March 27, 2018 2:26 PM

Get a life, it's just a show

by Anonymousreply 140March 27, 2018 5:14 PM

I thought that Mark Indelicato, playing Justin Suarez on Ugly Betty, was a perfect little fem boy who played tribute to the stereotype without leaving a burnt rut in the shag carpet. I was emotionally invested in Justin because he was so real. Noah Galvin was so fucking annoying that he may never work again. (But his hunky TV dad has a new series; it won't last.) And Michael Urie is a Broadway star. It all depends how good the actor is. This second world brown child is neither attractive or talented. Buh-bye...

by Anonymousreply 141March 28, 2018 11:17 AM

Just watched the third episode. JJ Totah is the weakest part of a very weak show.

by Anonymousreply 142April 3, 2018 5:00 AM

Yeah r142, I liked this week's episodes better than the others but that whole "Moulin Rouge" and just his excessive eyebrow shit and rushing to talk instead of reacting to what they are saying is so 9th grade drama class.

by Anonymousreply 143April 3, 2018 5:01 AM

Whoever pitch this idea is a vile human being. This program is meant to laugh at the gay character. Even gay men are saying this kid is a walking talking stereotype.

by Anonymousreply 144April 3, 2018 6:05 AM

I agree r144, why can't he be a gay kid who likes horror movies and wants to be a lawyer? or a doctor? or a fucking welder? or anything but a choreographer and Kardashian watcher.

by Anonymousreply 145April 3, 2018 6:11 AM

"You're all complaining about the kid but the dad has total gay face and voice and we're supposed to believe he's straight?"

Nearly everyone on the show has the new general voice - hurried, sarcastic and semi-gay. Straights talk like this now.

by Anonymousreply 147April 17, 2018 11:30 PM

That kid is not likable at all. There’s zero chemistry between him and the actors playing his dad and uncle.

by Anonymousreply 148April 18, 2018 2:50 AM

Love the show. Love the kid. Love the dad. Love the uncle. Love the gym staff.

If you do not like it, move on. I will continue to watch.

by Anonymousreply 149April 18, 2018 2:58 AM

I love the show, especially the gym staff. I thought the episode spoofing Curves gyms was hilarious.

Adore Fortune Feimster.

by Anonymousreply 151April 18, 2018 3:09 AM

Cancelled. Better luck next time, son of GOPher.

Are you sure, R152? Every time the networks announce cancellations, I get an email announcement from THR and Variety but have received nothing today from either about "Champions" being axed. Not that it would surprise me that they canceled it, just saying I've heard nothing about it thus far.

by Anonymousreply 154April 20, 2018 1:24 AM

Nothing happens in this town unless R154 is notified.

by Anonymousreply 155April 20, 2018 1:26 AM

And don't you forget it, R155.

by Anonymousreply 156April 20, 2018 1:27 AM

Nina Wadia is in tonight’s episode. She was hilarious on the UK soap EastEnders.

by Anonymousreply 157April 20, 2018 1:28 AM

The kid was M2F, not gay.

by Anonymousreply 158April 20, 2018 2:56 AM

Get rid of the kid and make the brothers gay lovers and I'd watch, I find both of them insanely HOT!

by Anonymousreply 159April 20, 2018 3:00 AM

Who was that playing the grandma?

by Anonymousreply 160April 20, 2018 3:13 AM

Nina Wadia, R160. British actress and comedienne. She was in a pilot Mindy Kaling wrote which didn’t sell so I assume Kaling wrote her a character in this. She’s great. I loved her on the BBC soap EastEnders. Her character on it was a homophobe who eventually accepted her son’s relationship with another man.

by Anonymousreply 161April 20, 2018 3:19 AM

I didn't see this Champions episode yet, but that eastenders storyline with Jane's brother Christian and Syed and his Muslim family was engaging, emotional and at times thrilling.

Glad to see the actress is still working!

That site that announced it cancelled is a clickbait site notorious for made up stories like this. They play the odds, which are looking very bad for renewal as the ratings for this show are in the toilet, make educated guesses, and report them as fact. You wont see Champoins cancellation confirmed on any reputable site until it is real and official, which it is very likely to be at some point.

by Anonymousreply 163April 20, 2018 5:53 AM

Or until r154 says it is!

by Anonymousreply 164April 20, 2018 6:15 AM

R110, He looks like Ted Bundy.

by Anonymousreply 166April 20, 2018 10:30 AM

I like it. It's nice, fluff entertainment.

by Anonymousreply 167April 20, 2018 11:55 AM

It's NOT Fred Grandy - and nowhere can you find his name connected with it. It is his son Charlie Grandy, who worked on The Office and The Mindy Project.

Where do you people get your information???

by Anonymousreply 168April 20, 2018 12:54 PM

Where was Nadia? I watched the episode but didn't see her.

by Anonymousreply 169April 20, 2018 2:23 PM

This kid actor is a one trick pony. He's like a caricature and he can't sell a scene with any sort of depth.

by Anonymousreply 171April 20, 2018 2:32 PM

Oops. My bad. I was assuming Nina Wadia would be in the episode as the kid’s grandmother on the mother’s side. I do know she’s shot an episode of Champions, though, so I guess she’ll appear later.

by Anonymousreply 172April 20, 2018 3:48 PM

It has NOT been canceled.

by Anonymousreply 174April 20, 2018 5:17 PM
What's a desi?

It is a common British term for south Asians (Indian, Pakistan, & Bangladeshi)

by Anonymousreply 175April 20, 2018 5:20 PM

What's a desi? It's a married to a Lucy.

by Anonymousreply 176April 20, 2018 6:27 PM
It has NOT been canceled.

Yet.

by Anonymousreply 177April 20, 2018 9:39 PM

It will, though. It’s been a flop. Badly conceived. It’s set in Brooklyn but going by the cast and characters it could have been set in Cleveland.

by Anonymousreply 178April 20, 2018 10:39 PM

ABC is burning off the last two episodes tonight.

It had bizarre moments.

That was incredibly creepy r182. So that's how Glee ended up?

Those were the last seasons New Directions show choir kids. Had some good singers.
ABC is burning off the last two episodes tonight.

Seriously?

by Anonymousreply 185May 29, 2018 3:04 AM

It has some likeable characters the dad, brother, and Fortune Feimster. But everything else about it needs changed. It probably will be cancelled anyway.

by Anonymousreply 186May 29, 2018 5:52 AM

I just watched another episode and it's just so flamboyant and bad. When the brother says, "she's toxic, we don't speak. " and the kid flamboyantly says, "you just named two songs by two great divas" or some shit, it was fucking cringey.

by Anonymousreply 187May 29, 2018 6:20 AM

Is this on channel 7? I can't find it.

I thought I would hate it, but I actually really liked it. I know it's "problematic" or whatever with the ott stereotypical gay son, but some boys are like that and there is nothing wrong with it. Anyways, it was very funny. I laughed several times, which is more than can be said about the new Kimmy Schmidt season, 6 episodes in and I don't think I laughed once.

by Anonymousreply 190June 16, 2018 11:16 PM

The first season of Champions averaged a 0.47 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.92 million viewers.

That's a little better then twice FX's ratings for Pose. But pretty anemic for a main network program.

by Anonymousreply 191June 16, 2018 11:22 PM

So is this coming back next year or not?

by Anonymousreply 192June 26, 2018 7:11 AM

This show needs to die. I can't believe they made the gay kid so stereotypical.

by Anonymousreply 194June 26, 2018 7:23 AM

How could there still be no news? All other shows are either cancelled or cumming back. Why is this show so special that it's in limbo?

by Anonymousreply 195June 26, 2018 8:14 AM

Watched the whole thing on Netflix over the weekend., funny moments but average I guess. Kid is like a gay teen version of Mindy. Had to chuckle at the episode where the dad is all worked up because gayling put up a huge poster of wet t-shirt Bomer in his room. Sitcoms are stereotypical at best, even the DL fave Golden Girls were, to a large extent.

I wonder if they're trying to see if Netflix ratings are better than NBC, to evaluate if a second season makes economical sense.

by Anonymousreply 196June 26, 2018 8:16 AM

It's on Netflix?? Are all NBC shows on Netflix?

by Anonymousreply 197June 26, 2018 8:20 AM

I liked it a lot and Favreau makes me hard.

by Anonymousreply 198June 26, 2018 8:24 AM

Favreau was so weirdly unsexy in this. Couldn't believe it was the same guy from The Mick. And why would they cast a doughy guy as the dad who owns a gym?

by Anonymousreply 199June 26, 2018 10:58 AM

I just Googled it and as of today (June 26), the show has neither been renewed nor canceled. This seems kind of odd, as it's only 2 or 3 months until the new TV season.

by Anonymousreply 200June 26, 2018 5:00 PM

It was an ok show. Loved the kid and his uncle, but the rest dragged the whole thing down and I am a huge fan of Anders Holm and Workaholics.

by Anonymousreply 202June 30, 2018 4:26 PM

Well the gay kid is actually trans

by Anonymousreply 204August 21, 2018 9:45 AM

Oh ffs! Josie...and r204 is right, not attractive, not a good actor, totally trying to go along with the lunacy.

by Anonymousreply 205August 21, 2018 9:47 AM

R70's comment is interesting in hindsight:
I disagree with those who don't like the character. I think it's important to show you can be fem without being interested in transitioning. That's an important message to get out in today's climate.
