I saw the ad for it on tv and the gay kid "comes out" and the two dudebros go "yeah we know you're gay - you talk gay" or something like that.
I am surprised there hasn't been hysterical screeching about that yet. I can't find a clip online anywhere. The screechers generally have cut the cord, so if the clip isn't online then they probably can't see it in order to get offended.

Last night when I exited Netflix I accidentally tuned into one of the late night shows with the kid who stars in the show. I missed the introduction I honestly could not tell for certain if this was a guy or girl. Seemed like a darn smart young person but incredibly femme in voice and manner. This might go over better on CW instead of NBC.

| by Anonymous | reply 57 | March 7, 2018 10:16 PM |
I'm sort of effeminate myself but I hate this. This is the kind of character that is made to attract a certain type of young female viewer, not to serve as a role model for young gay or bi boys. Gay men are not necessarily effeminate, and if they are, they are not necessarily smart aleck types with a talent for theater. I myself am not.
It is in part due to the fact that the gay male characters are so stereotyped that so many men avoid coming out. Compare this to the way gay or bi women are depicted - any woman, according to pop culture, can turn out to be gay, but only a very precise kind of man will turn out to be non-straight.

But isn't normalizing gay characters a good thing? All right, he's over the top but don't you want Joe and Betty Sixpack to see gay kids as just folk. Putting gay characters in network sitcoms is a great way to reach regular Americans (deplorables) since you're not going to reach them in any other medium.

This show wasn’t created to satiate your selfish desires for “Accurate” representation of the gay community. If anything... it’s pretty fucking accurate. The question is...why are you acting like it’s not? This kid talks and acts like most gay 15-year-olds. R82, it’s just homophobia. There’s a certain type, maybe a certain generation of gay man that hates himself and sees EVERYONE ELSE as an extension of themselves - in their minds, other people are not allowed to be themselves, they have to be the homophobe’s ideal of what gay men and gay people should be which is inevitably not to be at all perceived as gay. It’s a kind of wounded narcissism that can’t separate itself from anyone else, with very low self-esteem.

This flaming kid is nothing like the gay teens today. Whoever says this is an eldergay out of touch with the times.
Most of my 14 year old nephew's friends are regular boys and most are no labels kinda kids. That's the norm today. They find my being gay limiting and annoying.
The rare flaming teens today are horrible mean girls with this empowering bullshit and kids are not having it. My nephew and his friends loathe the catty queens.
A novelty would be a femme kid who's not into musicals and being witty, but a kind and sensitive type like one of my nephew's friend, Gabriel a mathlete I thoroughly enjoy interacting with. He's openly gay and his friends love him.
The line of sexuality for today's teens is totally blurred, which makes this character even more outdated.

Nobody is in the movie business to make GOOD comedy or art. They are in the business of making "candy everybody wants" kind of comedy and art. Tired, old tropes audiences know and are used to laugh about / at.
HBO's Looking was branded as boring and too subtle and not funny, because it was too normal. To this day what keeps people watching is over the top characters getting into over the top shenanigans (or make it like like these situations are over the top).

A talented writer would make this boring show into a generation clash between a son who can't fit labels of the past and the dad's inability to deal with his fluidity for instance.
Channel 4's Cucumber from Russel T Davis did this to funny results presenting a 40something gay who lived a repressed gay life trying to deal with his supposedly straight nephew kissing guys on YouTube for views and being all cuddly with his equally no labels friend to fantastic comedic effect.
Then again Davis is a talented writer.....

R129 As someone who watches shows from all over the world for a living I have to say you don't know what you're talking about. There's plenty of very popular TV made with artistic bent, ranging from recycling old tropes with talent writing to surprisingly innovative storytelling.

Are your feelings hurt? Do you want a nappy and a pacifier? Not my fault your repertoire is limited and your taste low brow.
The fact you consider Looking to be a comedy speaks volumes. No wonder you find this NBC drivel funny. Over the top is fodder for unneducated idiots with limited exposure to quality programing.

I thought that Mark Indelicato, playing Justin Suarez on Ugly Betty, was a perfect little fem boy who played tribute to the stereotype without leaving a burnt rut in the shag carpet. I was emotionally invested in Justin because he was so real. Noah Galvin was so fucking annoying that he may never work again. (But his hunky TV dad has a new series; it won't last.) And Michael Urie is a Broadway star. It all depends how good the actor is. This second world brown child is neither attractive or talented. Buh-bye...

Just watched the third episode. JJ Totah is the weakest part of a very weak show.
| by Anonymous | reply 142 | April 3, 2018 5:00 AM |
Yeah r142, I liked this week's episodes better than the others but that whole "Moulin Rouge" and just his excessive eyebrow shit and rushing to talk instead of reacting to what they are saying is so 9th grade drama class.
| by Anonymous | reply 143 | April 3, 2018 5:01 AM |
Whoever pitch this idea is a vile human being. This program is meant to laugh at the gay character. Even gay men are saying this kid is a walking talking stereotype.
| by Anonymous | reply 144 | April 3, 2018 6:05 AM |
I agree r144, why can't he be a gay kid who likes horror movies and wants to be a lawyer? or a doctor? or a fucking welder? or anything but a choreographer and Kardashian watcher.
| by Anonymous | reply 145 | April 3, 2018 6:11 AM |
"You're all complaining about the kid but the dad has total gay face and voice and we're supposed to believe he's straight?"
Nearly everyone on the show has the new general voice - hurried, sarcastic and semi-gay. Straights talk like this now.
| by Anonymous | reply 147 | April 17, 2018 11:30 PM |
That kid is not likable at all. There’s zero chemistry between him and the actors playing his dad and uncle.
| by Anonymous | reply 148 | April 18, 2018 2:50 AM |
Love the show. Love the kid. Love the dad. Love the uncle. Love the gym staff.
If you do not like it, move on. I will continue to watch.
| by Anonymous | reply 149 | April 18, 2018 2:58 AM |
I love the show, especially the gym staff. I thought the episode spoofing Curves gyms was hilarious.
Adore Fortune Feimster.

Are you sure, R152? Every time the networks announce cancellations, I get an email announcement from THR and Variety but have received nothing today from either about "Champions" being axed. Not that it would surprise me that they canceled it, just saying I've heard nothing about it thus far.

Nina Wadia is in tonight’s episode. She was hilarious on the UK soap EastEnders.
| by Anonymous | reply 157 | April 20, 2018 1:28 AM |
The kid was M2F, not gay.
| by Anonymous | reply 158 | April 20, 2018 2:56 AM |
Get rid of the kid and make the brothers gay lovers and I'd watch, I find both of them insanely HOT!
| by Anonymous | reply 159 | April 20, 2018 3:00 AM |
Who was that playing the grandma?
| by Anonymous | reply 160 | April 20, 2018 3:13 AM |
Nina Wadia, R160. British actress and comedienne. She was in a pilot Mindy Kaling wrote which didn’t sell so I assume Kaling wrote her a character in this. She’s great. I loved her on the BBC soap EastEnders. Her character on it was a homophobe who eventually accepted her son’s relationship with another man.
| by Anonymous | reply 161 | April 20, 2018 3:19 AM |
I didn't see this Champions episode yet, but that eastenders storyline with Jane's brother Christian and Syed and his Muslim family was engaging, emotional and at times thrilling.
Glad to see the actress is still working!

That site that announced it cancelled is a clickbait site notorious for made up stories like this. They play the odds, which are looking very bad for renewal as the ratings for this show are in the toilet, make educated guesses, and report them as fact. You wont see Champoins cancellation confirmed on any reputable site until it is real and official, which it is very likely to be at some point.

It's NOT Fred Grandy - and nowhere can you find his name connected with it. It is his son Charlie Grandy, who worked on The Office and The Mindy Project.
Where do you people get your information???

Where was Nadia? I watched the episode but didn't see her.
| by Anonymous | reply 169 | April 20, 2018 2:23 PM |
This kid actor is a one trick pony. He's like a caricature and he can't sell a scene with any sort of depth.
| by Anonymous | reply 171 | April 20, 2018 2:32 PM |
Oops. My bad. I was assuming Nina Wadia would be in the episode as the kid’s grandmother on the mother’s side. I do know she’s shot an episode of Champions, though, so I guess she’ll appear later.

I just watched another episode and it's just so flamboyant and bad. When the brother says, "she's toxic, we don't speak. " and the kid flamboyantly says, "you just named two songs by two great divas" or some shit, it was fucking cringey.

I thought I would hate it, but I actually really liked it. I know it's "problematic" or whatever with the ott stereotypical gay son, but some boys are like that and there is nothing wrong with it. Anyways, it was very funny. I laughed several times, which is more than can be said about the new Kimmy Schmidt season, 6 episodes in and I don't think I laughed once.

The first season of Champions averaged a 0.47 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.92 million viewers.
That's a little better then twice FX's ratings for Pose. But pretty anemic for a main network program.
| by Anonymous | reply 191 | June 16, 2018 11:22 PM |
So is this coming back next year or not?
| by Anonymous | reply 192 | June 26, 2018 7:11 AM |
This show needs to die. I can't believe they made the gay kid so stereotypical.
| by Anonymous | reply 194 | June 26, 2018 7:23 AM |
How could there still be no news? All other shows are either cancelled or cumming back. Why is this show so special that it's in limbo?
| by Anonymous | reply 195 | June 26, 2018 8:14 AM |
Watched the whole thing on Netflix over the weekend., funny moments but average I guess. Kid is like a gay teen version of Mindy. Had to chuckle at the episode where the dad is all worked up because gayling put up a huge poster of wet t-shirt Bomer in his room. Sitcoms are stereotypical at best, even the DL fave Golden Girls were, to a large extent.
I wonder if they're trying to see if Netflix ratings are better than NBC, to evaluate if a second season makes economical sense.
| by Anonymous | reply 196 | June 26, 2018 8:16 AM |
It's on Netflix?? Are all NBC shows on Netflix?

| by Anonymous | reply 198 | June 26, 2018 8:24 AM |
Favreau was so weirdly unsexy in this. Couldn't believe it was the same guy from The Mick. And why would they cast a doughy guy as the dad who owns a gym?
| by Anonymous | reply 199 | June 26, 2018 10:58 AM |
I just Googled it and as of today (June 26), the show has neither been renewed nor canceled. This seems kind of odd, as it's only 2 or 3 months until the new TV season.
| by Anonymous | reply 200 | June 26, 2018 5:00 PM |
