Netflix simply bought this long running (30 years) show from Japan's Nippon TV but it is a delight. A simple concept that would be the unimaginable in the States, it's premise is putting very young kids (2 and up) into the world to run their first errands for their family. There are tons of safeguards in place, including visible cameramen but most of the kids seem relatively oblivious to it (with the exception of the two friends from Tokyo who keep asking why thee are so many cameras). The shows are very brief, from 10-20 minutes but the resiliency of the kids might bring a tear to your eyes. My fave was the brat who went home, ate, played with the dog and then brought a thimble of orange juice back to the workers, which was his assigned task. His home was filled with scribbles on the wall and torn shoji screens, meaning he was more than a handful on a daily basis. At the other extreme was the boy whose parents had him late in life and had spoiled him. They send him on his task but he stops to pray for his family and his architect father.

omg watched a sample episode!
This show is crazy, fascinating, a bit stressful, funny, cute and totally something that wouldn't work in American society.

Thank you for posting this. Some of it gets lost in translation like when the kids mispronounce a word—pigeon, taro—instead of basket. I wish there was less narration.

SNL did a parody last night substituting boyfriends for kids.
The girl in the Old Enough photo has one of the best stories. The entire city comes out to root for her but ironically, they make her miss the watch shop which is her second goal. She holds back the tears til she sees mom but then insists on finding the watch store and the entire town comes out again to help her and watch for her. The little boy who lost the apples down the hill twice had me screaming "NO!"

The SNL skit is hardly a parody; it is real-life and just another manifestation of the media's ongoing attempt to belittle men and lionize women. Just look at any commercial. 100% of the men are ignorant and clueless and have to rely on the always-wise woman to have the answer. Is a woman ever wrong? Never. Radio advertising is the worst. women know more than men on everything, even auto repair. So, the SNL skit is just tired, as is the whole show.

Can we get back to the Japanese show? I love this show and watched when it dropped a month ago...then I went on to try to find all the episodes on Dailymotion. I hope Netflix buys the previous series, because I am obsessed with this concept. It's important for young children to learn independence by taking a bus or train to school. It's fantastic the community keeps an eye on the children. The kids are utterly adorable...I just can't believe the 2 year olds going on errands. The parents try their best to put on a brave face, but they're dying inside.

R5 calm down. A lot of straight men are fucking immature morons who lean on their wife/girlfriend to look after them as a mother would do and are almost helpless on their own doing the most basic of tasks. Gay men don't have that privilege
R7 thanks didn't realize there were additional episodes on Dailymotion. I'll be watching those

r7, They are fantastic! Some of the shows have kids who did errands in the 90's and now they are married with their own kids. They also show kids who are now in high school...This show is tremendous!

I love all things Japanese (and Korean) so I watched this the day it came out and it was adorable. I love how Japanese reality shows are soothing unlike the American shit like Real Housewives of Beverly Hills where everyone is a psychotic cunt.

Just another indication that there are, indeed, civilized countries in the world, unlike the US.
