Rosalind Russell was a terrible actress.

Well, I agree with you, OP. Even Brian Aherne's presence doesn't help this stinker.
I love old movies, but too many of are really lacking in the script department. The comedies especially are often lame beyond belief and not the slightest bit funny. I end up feeling sorry for the actors performing in them.

Even worse. They dumped all the music from "Wonderful Town" (Bernstein, Comden & Green) but made it a musical anyway.

The movie is based on a play, which was based on a series of biographical stories in "The New Yorker" by Rosalind Russell's character about her younger, prettier sister Eileen. The real Eileen married writer Nathanael West, best known for his 1930s novels "Miss Lonelyhearts" and "The Day Of The Locust". In 1940, a few days before the play's opening night, he caused an auto accident that killed them both.
