I was recently surprised to discover that Estelle Getty played Sophia (who goes back to living at Shady Pines) on Empty Nest for two more years after The Golden Palace was cancelled. That means the Sophia character lasted a straight decade (1985-1995). I was curious whether she ever mentioned what happened to Blanche or Rose or the hotel but apparently not according to my research.

r1, I always thought it was so sad that Sophia was back living at Shady Pines. But Empty Nest was just an awful sitcom. It's amazing that it came from the same creative team as The Golden Girls.
| by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 2, 2014 6:41 AM |
yeah sophia living in shady pines again was one final golden girls inconsistency. She spent seven seasons hating that place, Dorothy used it as a threat to get Sophia in line. yet suddenly to shoe horn her into Empty Nest they had her living there again.. There was no mention of what happened to Blanche or Rose..

[quote]Yes, [R24], she was slow dancing with a rake.
In another prom scenario (there were several for Dorothy), didn't Sophia say that Dorothy made up a ruse about going to prom with the high school quarterback and even bought her own corsage? But she spent the night in the basement giving herself hickeys with the vacuum cleaner, which is how she was caught 'cause she accidentally stepped on a puddle and accidentally shocked herself.

Charlie and Rose had a long and happy marriage and had five children: Bridget Nylund, Gunilla Nylund (pronounced "Janella"), Kirsten Adams, Adam Nylund, and Charlie Nylund, Jr.. Charley Adams was Rose's granddaughter, and Kirsten's daughter. She was named after Kirsten's father, Charley's grandfather, Charlie. Of her children, only Bridget and Kirsten appeared on the show (although Kirsten was played by two different actresses).

Doris belack as Gloria #1, Christine Belford as Kirsten #1, Shawn Schepps as Becky #1 all looked closer to the actresses they were related to on the show.. Kate #2 was a much better choice as Dorothy’s daughter.
