I have a friend I met in junior high in 1980 and we are still close. Matt Dillon is her cousin. He is hetero but cool. He has been famous for most of his life…since he was plucked out of obscurity at 13 for Over the Edge. He was very mature for his age in the way that many of my generation were. He is intelligent and is just a little bit bored, as anyone would be after more than 40 years of doing the same thing. I admire him because he was never into being famous and still has an air of mystery about him. He’s also developed into a very good actor and I think at some point he’s going to get another academy award nomination, maybe for a supporting role, and he may even win. He’s one of those people you eventually realize has been around forever and is really good and you kind of take for granted.

I wish they made The Basketball Diaries in the 80s and had Matt play Jim Carroll. It would be perfect casting due Matt also being Irish Catholic and a New York native (well Westchester but still close enough). Leo was too California and nobody could buy his scrawny twink body as a star basketball athlete.
