Manhunter vs Silence of the Lambs

Versus may be the wrong word. I've always thought Manhunter was closer to the book and a little creepier but SOTL was scarier. Any opinions?

MANHUNTER is far, far better!

I enjoy it much more than SOTL.

And William Peterson is HOT in it!

ManHOLE is far superior to both.

Red Dragon is the superior book but SotL is the better movie.

R5 Not for me, but I'm interested in anyone else's comparisons.

R6 But, they are the same story. So, surely...

R7 I appreciate your enthusiasm and welcome your opinion. However, I'm not asking about a book-to-movie comparison but a movie-to-movie comparison.

[italic]Manhunter[/italic] was one of Mann's first directorial efforts. The action sequences are great, but it's not as tight as [italic]Heat[/italic] or [italic]Last of the Mohicans[/italic]. Still, I prefer it to SotL. And I found Brian Cox a hell of a lot scarier than Hopkins as Lecter, though each performance was appropriate to the director's style. The one variance from the book I disliked in SotL was making Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) a nice guy. I have no idea why Demme changed that. He's supposed to be a mortal pain in the ass who commands total loyalty. Dennis Farina's portrayal is much closer to the book and also a more effective performance. Scott Glenn is certainly capable of doing it right, so it must have been Demme's bright idea.

It's strange that "Manhunter" flopped at the box office; it's a pretty compelling thriller.

And all of those glorious shirtless scenes of William Peterson!

I remember when NBC once ran “Manhunter” after the success of SOTL. They subtitled it as “The Pursuit of Hannibal Lecter”, even though Lecter was imprisoned in it.

Did I imagine it or did William Peterson show his dick in Manhunter?
