Lost Horizon - The Musical (1973)

Any eldergays remember this colossal train wreck of a movie? I saw it in the theater with my family when I was a kid and thought it was the greatest movie ever made. I was obsessed with it, even getting the two-record movie soundtrack that featured a foldout picture of Shangri-La itself in the middle.

But after seeing the movie for the first time in years on TCM not too long ago, I couldn't believe how awful it was. Who the hell the decided to cast a musical with people like Peter Finch, Liv Ullman, Sally Kellerman, and George Kennedy, for God's sake? At least they got something right with Bobby Van, who was actually a dancer and a singer.

This number featuring Sally Kellerman crooning to George Kennedy - oh, lord!

I know The Fifth Dumension recorded a song for it, "On The Beach".

A decent single that didn't chart.

James Shigeta, 1970s gay clone chorus boys, a plastic doll baby, and incense urns - this number has to be the worst!

Liv Ullman was a big name at the time, and deservedly so. But she hadn't made her reputation as a singer, that's for sure. (I've always assumed that most of the solo singing voices in this movie were dubbed?)

R1, ON the Beach wasn't a song from Lost Horizon. Fifth Dimension recorded Living Together Growing Together from the film. Their record company forced them to record this as Columbia Pictures, which produced Lost Horizon, owned the record company. I believe Lost Horizon pretty much ended the song writing partnership of Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

R10 God, couldn't they have at least cast people who could sing and dance?
