I liked his solo album. Just like JC Chasez, he waited way too late to go solo. He should have pushed harder for a solo career back in the mid-90s right after NKOTB hysteria died down. Justin Timberlake and Beyonce went solo right around the time their groups were peaking in popularity. Jordan waited too long and plus he was too old to appeal to the teen pop crowd. No matter how hot, tween girls aren't going to want to see a 29-year-old man who looks like their schoolteacher breaking dance moves at a carnival.

His album flopped bad. That’s why his label didn’t release more singles. That’s not up to him unless it’s independently done.

It also isn’t because he waited too long. JC didn’t wait too long, he released his album in 2003? NSYNC was still together in 2002. Some people are stars on their own, some aren’t.

He and Danny Wood were breakdancers who performed on Boston subways before they joined NKOTB. They had experience. Even though most of NKOTB's music was corny and aged like milk. They were always strong performers.

Jordan has been dancing his whole life. Of course that means nothing when it comes to choreography, but thankfully he was good (the strongest dancer when it came to choreographed dances, and supposedly the quickest learner). Performing in general seemed to come natural to him.

I actually prefer NKOTB to the other white boy bands that have come after them. Most of them sucked. I was into Take That for a millisecond, but they got boring quickly, with Gary Barlow at the helm.

New Edition is, for me, the best boy band ever.

Jordan”s first album was released in 1999 and went gold as did the first single from the album. He did wait too long (5 years between the last NKOTB album and his first album) and the music industry had changed monumentally. By 1994 NKOTB was passé and their album flopped so the bloom was off the rose even then.

Jordan probably should’ve put out a solo album in 91. He’s not that ambitious like Donnie and Joe are. His second album didn’t come out until 2006.

JC's debut was still too late in my opinion. Not just because the timing, it was 2004 (NSYNC was way over and JT solidified his place in pop). But he was also too old (28 is like 40 in pop music years) and the choice of singles and music videos were awful too. I actually liked the album itself, great vocals and slick production. But JC just wasn't going to happen. If he went for a pop career right after The Mickey Mouse Club ended around 1994, he would have had more success. JC was a breakout star of MMC and a heartthrob. It would have been the perfect time and he would have been marketed as a teen version of the blue-eyed soul singers like Michael Bolton and George Michael. When JC joined NSYNC he was already pushing it, he was like 20 (not too old at the time) but NSYNC didn't blow up in The US until 1998 (JC was 22 but JT and Lance were 17 and 19). JT and Lance became popular with the tween girl crowd for being closer to their age. JC and the three others were too old to be swoonworthy. JT was better-looking and a better dancer than Lance which is why Jive pushed him as the frontman and invested heavily in his solo career. So, JC may have had a better shot had he not signed onto NSYNC and tried for a shot at solo stardom in the mid-90s.

Backstreet Boys had a strong debut but once they ditched the R&B sound for dance-pop-rock via Max Martin they became repetitive, too much like Britney Spears. NSYNC started out too Max Martin-esque pop too with corny, embarrassing repetitive songs but their last album, Celebrity, where they delved more into hip-hop, glitch-pop and R&B was actually enjoyable.

This song is a guilty pleasure just for the production by JT and still sounds fresh. Timberlake is annoying though.

I was just watching a reaction video to New Edition’s “Cool It Now”, which led me to watch the same couple react to NKOTB’s “Step By Step”, and I love that the song still hits hard. It’s a great pop song.

But the way they fawn over Jordan (mostly the man, actually, who seems beyond impressed) made me think of this thread. Jordan really fucked up by not going solo (like Maurice etc. wanted) when they were at the top. He really put it off for many years. What a fuck up. He really had appeal that crossed over to black people as well as white.

Also, the wife looks like she is getting turned on by their swagger

R96 the plan was for him to go solo after “Step By Step”, which had the biggest production on an album for them (and it paid off, the album sold millions of copies and that single was a massive hit). That tour was massive, too. You can see he was pushed front and center at that point, with them even putting a song on that album that was pretty much a Jordan solo (despite it being a NKOTB song). He’s the only vocals on it.

He ended up not wanting to and felt drained. He probably knew it would be even more work as solo star. He was never ambitious, despite the talent and looks and mass crossover appeal. NKOTB had a lot of black fans too.

Jordan was THE STAR during the Step By Step era. Front and center, very handsome and hot with a beautiful head of hair. He also had a good personality.

What could have been.

R55 JC’s solo career was sabotaged. JC and his team were even upset with the album cover, which was terrible. Jive didn’t want him to work.

His look at the time also did no favors. Justin shed his boy band look and went for a more urban look while JC stayed eccentric with his long hair and shit.

JC was too old and had a very mature, quiet and laidback personality, he was the "dad" of the group. JT was younger, cockier, extroverted and became the most popular (he was the face of NSYNC) and he dated Britney (who was huge at the time). JT just had more commercial appeal and Jive took notice and pushed him hard. I liked JC's solo record btw, the eclectic and experimental sounds and gorgeous vocals. It reminded me of Prince and so that alone wouldn't make it as commercial.

JC should have tried for a career in the mid-90s after the Mickey Mouse Club ended. While it was a premium cable tv show, he was apparently one of the most popular members and a major heartthrob. NSYNC was actually built around him with him being the intended breakout star. Timberlake (his costar from MMC) was added to be the cute little one but ended up growing up to be very tall and goodlooking and quickly became the actual breakout star. It was really timing and luck. JC just wasn't fortunate in that regard though he found success in production.

NSYNC and Backstreet Boys were mostly grown ass men too. Timberlake and Carter were actually teenage boys which made them more attractive to the mostly tween girl fanbase. While NKOTB were all teenagers and Joey was really not that much younger than the rest, Donnie and Danny looked older than their age.

Joey, Chris and JC were in their 20s, while Lance and Justin were teenagers. Lance is a little older than JT, but never caught the eye of the public like cocky young extroverted JT did. JT’s arrogance and cockiness and come off endearing and charming when you’re a cute teenager/early 20s.

Nick Carter was legit the only teen in BSB, and like JT, a minor.

R113 you’re right about NKOTB being all teens. Donnie/Jonathan/Danny were 15/16 when their first album came out, Jordan was 14 and Joey was 12. While not much younger in retrospect, those 2-4 year age gaps feel a lot bigger when you’re 12 and 16.

Lance was closeted too going from a deeply religious backwoods upbringing to touring worldwide in a boy band, so he had to reign in a lot of his personality. It would have hard to compete with Justin in that regard who is super outgoing and str8. But apparently Lance was the second most popular member of NSYNC after Justin.

Nick Carter tried going solo but I don't think he's interesting musically or even that talented. His voice is very thin and breathy and kinda annoying too. He had that pop rock album that flopped. Nick’s music wasn’t good for the time. Both Nick and JT had albums come out weeks apart, and were recording the debut solo albums at the same time. Nick went for a pop rock sound because JT was doing a more urban sound, and their labels didn’t want them making music that sounded similar. Big mistake. Urban music was what was at the top of the charts in 2002. Pop rock not so much.

Also, Britney linked JT with some of the producers she worked with.

Then he dumped her.

The video says Album Version but that’s a mistake. The single version featured Pharrell, the album version was just Britney.

I didn’t know JC was older, I don’t think anyone thought of it. I was a kid / teenager when they were popular. They were the only hot ones in the group.

JT and management were pulling a Diana Ross / Beyonce. No one was going to be successful but JT.

Nick Carter wouldn't have been taken seriously as pop rock even if the music was passable. His fanbase was used to BSB's pure pop sound and he wasn't going to attract people who were into rock who would hate him because of being in BSB. It's just like how rock fans hated Britney for her awful cover of I Can't Get No Satisfaction.

The only reason it worked out for Harry Styles was because One Direction was already pop rock

JT also just played his cards right. His goal was always to go solo. His goal was always to be THE star. And he achieved that and did whatever need be to get there, like dating (using) his former childhood friend and Mouseketeer Britney for all the press and attention and then gaining access to producers and writers she worked with, and then ditching her.

Or pushing for himself to be the Diana of the group on album 3. JC still had a bunch of vocals but JT was always the “highlight” of the videos and most featured in them.

He had more lead parts in album 3 than JC.

R129 I know who Pharrell and Timbaland are. I was just saying maybe Pharrell got in contact with Timberlake if Britney already had connections due to Pharrell producing some of her songs. If not Britney, Jive would have gotten Pharrell. Either way JT was set up for success.

R131 I dunno if that’s not true. I’m 35. I was in middle school when boy bands and Britney were big and then high school 2001-2005. Everyone who listened to Backstreet Boys and NSYNC went on to listen to Avril Lavigne and Hoobstank so it’s not like he was so out of place, he was catering to the same audience.

I don’t remember seeing him as trying hard or thinking it was out of place, the music was just boring. He’d have gotten away with it had the music been decent.

I also don’t remember him being very visible. I remember them playing the music video but I don’t remember him being anywhere else.

After his debut album came out he did that Rolling Stone cover that got him a ridiculous amount of attention. I remember even black girls in my HS fawning over him. JT was THAT white boy, the one with swagger and flavor, not too vanilla, who catered to all people. These days black women seem resentful of him.

His Rolling Stone cover (and photo-spread) were hot. He was hot back then.

My Jordan Knight story. Back when they NKOtB were at their peak I was in my punker/Goth phase, and walking thru a mall. Suddenly I hear all of this screaming and lo and behold it was Jordan and some other members of NKOTB. I must say Jordan was quite beautiful. I think he had on make-up. He locked eyes with me staring, completely ignoring the girls. We just lustfully stared at each other. I was headed down and he was headed up and out. So that was it. I suppose I might have had a chance if I followed him back to the hotel, but I had to go to an exam.

He was very obnoxious in the late 2000s and early 10s when he was in every movie and always on SNL. He became boringly straight with his marriage to Jessica Biel and the suit and tie look of 20/20 Experience. He was fun with his first two albums and then got pretentious and his music more bloated.

Her singles did well overseas. In the states people bought her albums but not her singles.

Christina was the opposite. She sold a lot of singles but her albums (after her first) not as much, and her tours mostly failed (with her canceling numerous tours).

R150 A lot of her songs were too tween-oriented for the radio. BOMT was adult enough but her second and third album were very teen girlish. But her success was that she appealed to that tween market and sold so many albums and tours. She was a fixture on MTV too. It's similar to stuff like Hannah Montana and High School Musical. Sold a lot but wasn't "cool enough" for American radio. British radio played a lot of Britney's teen hits though. Britney got more hits in The US after she became an adult artist with In The Zone with Toxic and Everytime getting tons of airplay.

r153 Brit was the first to break out of the MM club with Baby one more time, a Max Martin song. Justine and JC were out earlier with Tearing up my heart but it was focused in Europe as their pedo manager did not want to start in the US for fear of pissing off BSB,. Christina even says she was at home in Pittsburgh when she first heard baby one more time and freaked out that everyone was doing something but her, then she got reflections from Mulan, and then an album.

Jordan Knigth did have solo success with Give it to You, a banger for the TRL days but not much success after that single. He is rumored to be sexually fluid and hung like a horse.

Reflection came out before Baby One More Time. Mulan was released in June 1998. While BOMT came out in October 1998. Christina was supposed to have her album released in early 1999 but it got delayed to be more in the teen pop style of Britney's. So Britney's debut album came out first but Christina was working on it prior to Britney.

r162 - Robyn has huge success with Always be Around and Show me love, both top ten hits charting for 24 weeks each. I am not saying it was Just Max Martin, just that she got the biggest hitmaker at the time to record with her. r157 Reflections was originally recorded by the Filipina actress Lea Salonga, the girl who voiced Mulan. Christina was out of money as was RCA, they told her to go to Disney. Disney said if she could hit the High E she could do it. She practiced recording Run to You by Whitney as it had the note she needed to hit. She hit it and got the recording of Reflections but it was released as an adult contemporary song. So yes you are right it was out first, but Christina even says she was surprised when she heard Baby One More Time - that Britney was so far ahead of her in getting a pop album out, which with the success of Reflections, funded getting Genie in a Bottle out.
