Jessica Lange in The Postman Always Rings Twice

How was she received in this film?

It was on TCM yesterday.

Watching it now she doesn't do anything surprising but back when it came out she must have been a revelation.

The girl from King Kong gives quite a performance.

BTW I watched the whole thing and have no idea what the title means.

I thought she was great in it

It was the first time she was ever allowed to really show what she could do, and she knocked it out of the park. She’s proved that she’s one of the greats time and time again. Her performances in Frances and Sweet Dreams are my favourites.

It's the first time you see that tired bag of tricks she was to trot out for the next 40 years, so I suppose it seemed fresh at that point.

Well she was better than Jack..

What a great rack. She was so gorgeous here.

The movie didn't fare well with critics or at the box office, but Jessica herself received great reviews. It was a game-changer for her after the debacle of King Kong, and the following year she was double Oscar-nominated for Frances (lead) and Tootsie (supporting). She was off and running.

OP, watch the film again or read the book and look for repetition and how some things, like the murder, don’t take until the second try.

The novel by James M. Cain is really a good read! Tense and trashy.

If Frances had come out in this year she would have won

R9 She won for Tootsie, and isn't that enough for one year?

TPART and 'Body Heat' were released around same time. Critics thought 'Body Heat' with Kathleen Turner was the better re-make of TPART

by Anonymousreply 11September 25, 2023 3:29 PM

Body Heat was better but I still like TPART

R8 I'm not the OP, but your explanation of the title is the first one that's ever made sense to me. Thank you.

Can you imagine how things would have turned out had Dino cast Meryl?

by Anonymousreply 14September 25, 2023 10:17 PM

Did Meryl turn down Postman?

R15 she said she would do it if the leading man committed to the same level of explicitness as the female. Thankfully Nicholson didn't!

R10 I meant she would have won for a performance that merited it, and one of the actual deserving supporting ladies could have won in 1982.
