Forgotten band but the guy really had a voice.

I just read about his death a few minutes ago. He had a gifted, gorgeous voice and could hit all the right notes!!!

Jay Black (born David Blatt; November 2, 1938 – October 22, 2021) was an American singer, also known as "The Voice," whose height of fame came in the 1960s when he was the lead singer of the band Jay and the Americans. The band had numerous hits including "Cara Mia", "Come a Little Bit Closer", and "This Magic Moment".

Jay Black and Gary Puckett (and The Union Gap) had two of the best male signing voices of the 1960s.

There are no singers today like Jay Black and Gary Puckett today.
They had voices then.

They didn't call Jay Black "The Voice" for nothin'.

I'm afraid I might be responsible for this. For some reason, earlier today out of nowhere I felt compelled to play "Come a Little Bit Closer" on Spotify. I haven't heard, thought of, or played that song in years. And as soon as I do, BAM! He's dead.

Many years later singing "Cara Mia."
Damn, he can still hit the notes. What a voice!

R11. It's all your fault.
Well, and there was this:
Black’s family confirmed that the singer died Friday night from complications from pneumonia. In recent years, Black also suffered from dementia.

Steely Dan connection:
Jay and the Americans notably served as the opening act for the Beatles’ first U.S. concert in 1964 in Washington, D.C.
The band first split up in 1973, at which point Black embarked on a lengthy solo career; prior to that, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen were both members of Black’s touring unit before forming Steely Dan.

R13, in that case, maybe Jay was sending me a message this morning from the Great Beyond to play his music.

Yeah, but Gary Puckett was a perv.

He had boundaries, R16. He told that young girl to run, that she was much too young.

Gary Puckett did indeed have a great voice but he and his band fucked up their career. Having had a number of big hits written by their hitmakers they decided to do their own songs and had only one more Top 10 hit. His solo career went nowhere. In later years he revealed that he is a Republican, and acknowledged the damage that their bullheadedness did to his/their career.

No one was better than Gary Puckett singing "Woman, Woman."

R19 Yes, his deep, sensual voice was fantastic in that song! Their first big hit which earned them a gold record.

This brings back memories of being glued to my little transister radio as a kid, all the great top 40 music of the early 60s. These little pieces of my childhood are dying one by one. Chad of Chad & Jeremy and Gerry Marsden of Gerry & the Pacemakers recently died too. They’re all getting into their 80s so it’ll be a steady stream of this from now on.

Gary Puckett had a great voice, but he was a fug.
