From Scream Queen to Oscar winner—if she pulls it off, it would be a tremendous accomplishment. Who watching her disco dancing in “Prom Night” back in 1980 could have predicated she would one day decades later win an Academy Award?

The tax auditor in EEAAO? I don't think they'd have considered someone in her late eighties for it. People would be wondering why she hadn't retired. It worked best with someone in Yeoh's age ballpark, given variations we see in other universes.
I thought JLC was wonderful. She makes it apparent even very early that Deirdre is someone who has a very unhappy life, and what little satisfaction she gets is from the power she wields in her job. We've all run across those types. Evelyn thinks at first that she's anti-Asian, but that's not it. She's just miserable.

Oscar doesn't usually go to comedic roles. It would be a miracle if she got it. It's fascinating that she's in the running at all. But she's great in it, her acting perfectly matching the over-the-top sensibility of the film. And her character gets to change and evolve through the different universes. She's got a shot, although the other nominees are nipping at her heels.
| by Anonymous | reply 41 | February 27, 2023 6:49 PM |

EEAAO just won the Producers Guild award for best picture, which is a strong indicator of what will win Best Picture at the Oscars. It already won the Directors Guild award, and last night it won the most SAG Awards of any film in history.
It's looking like a sweep for EEAAO at the Oscars.
I wish the Oscars would have John Carpenter due a special tribute to Jamie Lee during the ceremony. Maybe even do a tribute to all the Scream Queens in films over the years, like her mother Janet Leigh. That would be amazing!
| by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 27, 2023 7:28 PM |
She already swept the Activia Awards, next she will conquer the Academy Awards.
| by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 27, 2023 7:33 PM |
EEAAO is so original, inventive, creative, authentic, wild, hilarious, shocking, absurd, and touching. It deserves to win each category it is a frontrunner/strong contender: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Lead Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. A seven major category sweep the likes of which we haven't seen in many years.
It takes me back to when Parasite, Birdman, Gravity, The Shape of Water, Mad Max: Fury Road, Grand Budapest Hotel, and The Hurt Locker felt fresh and won the most Oscars during their respective years. (I'm purposefully ignoring Blah Blah Bland.)
| by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 27, 2023 7:46 PM |
R41, but that's the thing. JLC's role wasn't just comedic, it had a bit of everything. They ALL had to show range because of the maximalist, multiverse nature of the film hence the 11 nominations. All the more reason JLC, Michelle, Quan, and The Daniels should win. They had to embrace action/fight scenes, heartfelt drama, absurdist comedy, and elements of horror. I loved that JLC gave elements of Michael hunting down Laurie. Just a great film.
| by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 27, 2023 7:54 PM |
It's wild to see Jamie on the Match Game reruns from the 1970s, and then watch her today on awards shows as her career is at its absolute peak, especially as the rest of the game show panel are all dead.
Do you think Brett Sommers and Charles Nelson-Reilly thought Jamie would be doing so well at age 64? I'm sure Gene Rayburn and Richard Dawson would be very bitter about it.
| by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 27, 2023 7:57 PM |
[quote]Oscar doesn't usually go to comedic roles. It would be a miracle if she got it.
Comedy Oscar winners seem to go in and out of fashion. There were a lot of them in the '90s. Whoopi Goldberg (Ghost was a mishmash of genres, but she had the comic-relief role), Jack Palance, Marisa Tomei (assuming the correct name was read), Tom Hanks the second time, Martin Landau, Dianne Wiest, Mira Sorvino, Cuba Gooding Jr., Frances McDormand (well...Coen black comedy), Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt. There were fewer in the '00s and '10s, but still some: Arkin, Cruz, Waltz (twice), Dujardin, Plummer, Spencer, Pitt.
I realize that not all of those roles are exclusively comedic. Some of them have notes of drama and pathos as well. But I think JLC's Deirdre in EEAAO has those as well.
I'd say she has a shot. Chau and Hsu are the only two in the category who would really surprise me with a win.
[quote]I loved that JLC gave elements of Michael hunting down Laurie
One of the Daniels talked about that in the commentary. He said something like "Jamie Lee really seemed to know how to play the horror tropes, for some reason."

I just can’t see JLC winning the Oscar. It is never good when two costars are nominated in the same category, as it results in a split in the vote. And when it comes down to Ke Huy Quan vs. Jamie Lee Curtis for the Supporting Actor Oscar, most voters will go with the former.

R71 I love shitting on JLC as much as the next DataLounger, but that simply is not true. The obvious films that come to mind are “Trading Places” (BAFTA Winner Supporting Actress) and “A Fish Called Wanda” (BAFTA Nominee Actress). And cases could arguably be made for “True Lies” and “Freaky Friday”. The fact is, she is overdue for a nomination.
With that said, when it comes to wanting to win this year’s Oscar, JLC is thirstier than a victim pulled from the rubble of the earthquake in Turkey.

I would think the award, as she’s been on female hormones forever. So the appendage is there, just shrunken (?)
You can’t run away from the truth.
| by Anonymous | reply 131 | March 5, 2023 5:22 PM |
R130, she doesn't have a penis, that's not how Androgen Insensitivy Syndrome works. Her body doesn't absorb androgen, so she never developed external male genitalia. Without the androgen infusion, the human body defaults to female external genitalia. She wouldn't, however, have a uterus or ovaries. She probably had internal testes, but those are usually removed because of the risk of developing cancer in them.
Girls with AIS generally don't know they have it until adolescence when the absence of periods raises a big question mark. There are other indicators that tip off that she's an XY female--angle of the jawbone, the shoulder/hip ratio.

I noticed yesterday at the Indie Spirit awards that she didn't stand up when Ke Huy Quan won (beating her) but she stood up a whole bunch of times the rest of the show.

We don’t know WHAT she has down there, as she’s always been so freakishly uptight about discussing it. She could be full on hermaphrodite with a hole AND a pole. Or she could have had surgery to commit to one or the other.
All we know is she’s not a normal woman (no kids)

From CDAN today (and, yes, consider the highly dubious source):
[quote]This A-/B+ list actress lived up to her reputation last night. Everyone seems to love her, but honestly, if you are a service worker at any of these events, you are getting treated like crap. You are getting treated worse than any Karen could do to you. So, when they see the love she gets from the people she considers her equals, they just hate her that much more. Last night was no exception. She belittled and complained and treated the service staff horribly.

Jamie Lee doesn't even remember kissing Michelle Yeoh, because it was so spontaneous and unplanned on her part!
But mostly it's because that moment wasn't about "the work."

That clip at R244 Jamie is quite hyper in that she always needs to be talking, even though she gave fairly intelligent responses in the end. Also, she seems to really be conscious of how people get cancelled easily, maybe this drives some of her more recent PC posturing and pontificating?

While I was watching JLC at the Oscars and in her session with the backstage press after her win, I saw the resemblance to her mother (although a longer-limbed version) more than I ever had before. It occurred to me that she's only six years now from the age Janet Leigh was when they were in the 1998 Halloween movie together.
[quote]She made a very successful career for herself, why is she pointing out her Nepo roots like's Chet Haze or Brooklyn Beckham
Solidarity, I guess. She feels she should stick up for second-generation celebrities, because mockery of them has been fashionable lately. And it is good to have a reminder that people like JLC, Laura Dern, and Jeff Bridges have endured, while other children of famous parents perhaps got some early attention and then faded. Time will tell which of the current crop of "nepo babies" have staying power.
