It makes me so sad to know that Jane Alexander and Gena Rowlands will never win Oscars.

It seems to me they are the most deserving.

by Anonymousreply 60August 17, 2022 4:47 AM

Gena Rowlands is a bit overrated but turned in some incredible work. She deserved an Oscar for Opening Night or A Woman Under the Influence.

Jane Alexander is a character actress who got lucky the "plain Jane" rush of the 1970s. Totally unmemorable.

by Anonymousreply 2February 21, 2022 1:25 AM

There are also many truly phenomenal international actors who have never been nominated for Oscars - Jean-Paul Belmondo and Romy Schneider are two names that come to mind for me - because the Academy rarely recognizes foreign work.

by Anonymousreply 4February 21, 2022 1:29 AM

Not everyone can win an Oscar, get over it.

by Anonymousreply 5February 21, 2022 1:30 AM

I really don't care, do u?

by Anonymousreply 6February 21, 2022 1:33 AM

[quote]Jane Alexander is a character actress who got lucky the "plain Jane" rush of the 1970s. Totally unmemorable.

A harsh assessment, but an accurate one.

by Anonymousreply 7February 21, 2022 1:34 AM

The amount of great directors who never won an Oscar riles me up me more than some of the actor/actress snubs.

by Anonymousreply 8February 21, 2022 1:34 AM

And yes, Frances McDormand at R6. If you're remembered at all by future film fans, you too will earn your place in The Academy of The Inexplicably Overrated.

by Anonymousreply 9February 21, 2022 1:36 AM

I can remember when Jane Alexander was regarded in the middle-to-highbrow press as possibly the supreme of our three greatest actresses, the other two being Jill Clayburgh and Jane Fonda (M was only just getting started then).

by Anonymousreply 10February 21, 2022 1:37 AM

Setsuko Hara, who should have 2-3 Oscar wins was never even nominated for the award.

Catherine Deneuve, one of the greatest actresses to EVER appear on film, only has one nomination and zero wins.

Liv Ullman was nominated twice, but never won; I believe she’s receiving an honorary award this year, but we know that doesn’t count. At least she nominated though. What about Bibi Andersson (that monologue in Persona!), the severely underrated Ingrid Thulin or Harriet Andersson, whose performance in Through a Glass Darkly ranks as one of the best performances of the 1950s. Brilliance!

And yet Kristen Stewart was nominated for Spencer. Oh my sides!

Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts have Oscars, and Liv Ullman doesn’t?? Now that’s hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 11February 21, 2022 1:52 AM

Well, the good news OP is that no one seems to care about The Oscars anymore. And if SJWs/Cancel Culture have their way and succeed in bullying The Academy into nominating based on ethnicity, sexuality, gender and anything besides perfomance, the award will lose even more credibility.

So hopefully Jane & Gena will live long enough to see winning an Oscar become the equivalent of being in the Top 2.5% on OnlyFans.

Jane Alexander & Meryl Streep had a major falling out after Kramer vs Kramer

From 1981 - Asked if she is jealous of Meryl Streep, Jane Alexander told the Boston Globe YES

Jane seemed particularly incensed by the fact that Meryl’s picture is on the cover of Time Magazine in connection with the cover of "The French Lieutenant’s Woman." Jane called it "a fluke. That cover is a combination of politics and luck. It’s media machinery set into motion. And it fills a need. The public wants its heroines, needs heroines. It’s America’s equivalent to royalty. I’ve never part of that. Yes I regret it.."

Meryl Streep response?

"Look, I don’t know why that happened. I didn’t call up Time magazine and say "Look, I’ll give you $500 if you put me on your cover." There’s nothing I can do about it. It does make things difficult with my friends, even though they try – my real friends – try hard not to have it make a difference. But of course it does. Acting is this country is a lot like a sporting event. There’s a lot of competition, all of these award ceremonies – this is the best, this is the second best, this is the third best. This is the best this, this is the best that. This is the winner, this is the loser. I’m on the cover of Time, so Jane Alexander feels like a loser and I have to feel like I should feel like a winner? I didn’t win at Wimbledon; I made a movie!"

Jane has a sex offender as a son in law.

by Anonymousreply 14February 21, 2022 2:41 AM

They played lovers in the made-for-TV movie "A Question of Love" (1978). Little Nancy McKeon was well-cast as Alexander's daughter. It's a decent, if uninspired, movie (based on a true story), and Alexander is particularly good. Alexander has two Emmys and Rowlands has three (none for this movie)--does that make up for their Oscar drought?

The freepers who whine about SJWs and cancel culture are busy trying to silence gay kids. Fuck you, freeper troll. And most people who win Oscars are still - SHOCKER!- Caucasian. You accuse non-white nominees of being unqualified, meanwhile white chick Kristen Stewart is probably the least talented person to ever get a nomination

Jane Alexander isn't all that and in person is entirely unpleasant.

That never helps does it? (See: Lauren Bacall)

It's her son.

Someone like Julia Roberts expects a second Oscar.

R24, and she looks SO thrilled!

by Anonymousreply 25February 21, 2022 6:29 AM

All the scorn DL heaps on Glenn I would throw Jane's way. One of the few actresses I can't abide.

by Anonymousreply 26February 21, 2022 11:03 AM

I don't think Jane deserved any of her four Oscar nominations outside of the one she received for Testament. Her two supporting nominations were ridiculous, as she barely did anything in the films and the roles were of little note.

by Anonymousreply 27February 21, 2022 11:07 AM

She deserved a win in "The Great White Hope." She was amazing in it.

by Anonymousreply 28February 21, 2022 10:08 PM

She was broke and had to accept Clinton’s offer to head the Endowment for the Arts. Her business manager lost all of hers and her husband’s money just as she was expecting a slowdown in her career given her age. She wrote about this in her memoir about her time as the Arts chairwoman.

by Anonymousreply 29February 22, 2022 11:58 PM

Why wasn't Florence Lawrence awarded the first honorary Oscar?

by Anonymousreply 31February 23, 2022 2:25 AM

Nothing could possibly make me more sad than that... except possibly being attacked again tonight by the marauding rape gangs.

by Anonymousreply 32February 23, 2022 2:29 AM

Oh please, Helen Lawson was a theater actress, actually a Musical Theater Actress. She barely made any movies at all. But she should have won a Tony after all her many nominations. I gues she'll have to be happy with her Carbonell Award for playing Charlotte in HUSH HUSH, THE MUSICAL at the Gonna Have the Whole World on a Plate Dinner Theatre back in 1971.

by Anonymousreply 34February 24, 2022 4:24 PM

No true R2. She w superb in Testament. A downer of a film, but I think that if Shirley MacLaine hadn’t been nominated for TOE, Jane should have gotten the Oscar. YMMV.

by Anonymousreply 35February 24, 2022 5:20 PM

My iPad is acting up @ r35. Some letters are missing.

by Anonymousreply 36February 24, 2022 5:20 PM

IMO the nominations matter more than the actual awards which seem often to be based on factors other than the quality of the work.

by Anonymousreply 37February 24, 2022 5:28 PM

Sweetheart, as good as Jane was in Testament, she was damn lucky to have gotten the nomination. The film was barely seen and ONLY got publicity on the coattails of The Day After. She was 5th in line for winning.

by Anonymousreply 38February 24, 2022 5:32 PM

I couldn’t believe the Oscar peeps didn’t throw gena a supporting actor award for The Notebook. (Off topic: and james garner) not a great picture but they tossed Jessica Lange two for lesser work and/or Julie Andrews for not getting the My Fair Lady movie. So Gena got a lifetime award - at least that happened.

and now James Earl Jones gets the Cort Broadway Theatre named after him!! Deal with that, Jane!

by Anonymousreply 42March 2, 2022 7:07 PM

Jane was great as Eleanor Roosevelt, and Calamity Jane, on TV. Meryl played Eleanor in some Ken Burns thing (voice only) but frankly, was not good.

by Anonymousreply 43March 2, 2022 7:24 PM

Can't we just let G do a breast cancer movie with a great death scene so we can get this torture over with.

Anything to keep her from singing in turbans.

by Anonymousreply 44March 2, 2022 7:29 PM

Gena Rowlands was great in Gloria.

by Anonymousreply 45March 2, 2022 7:37 PM

I think that Jane totally deserved to win for TESTAMENT. Her performance was devastating. But the subject matter was so dour, plus I think that Shirley MacLaine was overdue. And Her Aurora Greenway is one of the most iconic moms onscreen.

by Anonymousreply 47June 11, 2022 9:41 PM

Annette Benning and Sigourney Weaver are two other terrific actresses who, while nominated for Oscars, have never won.

by Anonymousreply 48June 11, 2022 10:15 PM

I’ve mentioned this before.

Had drinks with Jane at an event back when she was head of the National Endowment for the Arts. She recalled a meeting with that great Republican intellect, Newt Gingrich. He told her that the National Endowment should be defunded and shut down.

“After all,” he said, “Arthur Murray didn’t need government money to win a Pulitzer Prize.”

by Anonymousreply 49June 11, 2022 10:26 PM

[quote]R11 Catherine Deneuve, one of the greatest actresses to EVER appear on film, only has one nomination and zero wins.

I like watching her, but I don’t even know if she’s truly an actress, per se. I mean, she’s so cool and detached (basically, French) that she barely does anything in her performances.

Her best acting is in REPULSION, but she’s playing a catatonic.

Jane Alexander is not nearly as good as she thinks she is. She's kind of a cunt.

Gena is better than she believes she is.

Rowlands misspells her first name. I fuckin' hate that!

So is life, Jane!

by Anonymousreply 54August 15, 2022 3:13 AM

Life with a couple of Tonys is more than luck and politics, not that cover girl Meryl would understand that.

by Anonymousreply 55August 15, 2022 3:29 AM

Jane was a phenomenal theater actress at one time. She didn’t have consistent luck with movies though. But four Oscar noms is nothing to scoff at.

Gena should have won at least Once amd at least once for Gloria. She’s incredible in it and gay iconic. BOOM BOOM BOOM (gun she fires ). Taxi! (CB she hails to getaway)
