Why didn't she have a better career? I know some people blame her for River Phoenix's death, but I always thought she was a decent actress, and had a naturally spunky energy about her. I thought she was very good in Little Women and The American President, and she'll always be a childhood fave of mine because of FernGully and Super Mario Bros.

She was pretty but hardly a standout performer.

What did she have to do with River Phoenix?

She was Phoenix's girlfriend at the time of his death. I never understood why some of his fans blame her for his death. Some feel that if he was still dating Martha Plimpton he would never have got involved with drugs.

Didn't Martha Plimpton stop dating him BECAUSE of the drugs?

No she stopped dating him because she's a lesbian!

Martha has had some cute boyfriends. And Fred Armisen.

Well, that explains it OP. Samantha was too boring even to have her own thread. Martha all the way. Love her!

She was with River Phoenix the night he died. Nobody on the scene did anything particularly useful to save him. River's underage sister and brother and Samantha hesitated too long to call for help, even after River started vomiting, passing out, and having seizures. Then, when Leaf (Joaquin) finally called 911, he lied about the drugs River had taken. When the paramedics arrived on scene and tried to save River, all of them kept on lying about the drugs.
Samantha, who was older than River's underage siblings and should have known better, ended up standing next to the outside wall of the Viper Room, banging her head repeatedly against the wall. No use to anyone. The paramedics, who had traveled only a few minutes to reach the scene, could have saved River if anyone had called at the first signs of trouble. Instead he was DOA.
River's family arrived and shipped the body off to Florida. All the witnesses to River's death fled out of state to avoid having to give evidence.

This is all typical addict behavior though—users are always hesitant to involve police, even if someone is OD-ing. They either don't want police attention on them, or they don't want to bring police into the equation on the off-chance that the person OD-ing might come out of it (or a mixture of both). When you are around people who use drugs and/or doing them, this is a common occurrence. You play with death. They may have responded irresponsibly out of panic or fear, but to blame any of them is wrong IMO. Even if Samantha was not perceptibly fast-acting, I find it odd that she gets the vitriol, while River's own brother—now beloved movie star, Joaquin—repeatedly lied to paramedics about what happened, and gets no criticism.
