Has anyone spent real money on stuff like dreary Marc Jacobs smocks like this?

I think monoculture in all kinds of things like music and tv and properly fashion too is much less prevalent and less powerful than it used to be.In the case of tv because of the explosion of choice in the world of streaming, digital tv and the internet , the number of people watching the same show at the same time in society is much harder to achieve than when there were few channels and less choice.

It’s just the Eightws back again. Baggy everything, high-waisted pants, trench coats, earth tones or jewel tones, fuzzy sweaters, linen, aviator frames. It’s all a rehash of Eighties fashion through the lens of a younger generation appropriating the looks their parents would have worn.

He's gorgeous. The clothes--meh.

I bought a beautiful black Italian suit and I never felt more tailored and smart. It was expensive and worth every penny.

Depressing. His face and the smock.

Maybe in Versace underwear he comes alive, R6.

He's depressed because he's wearing dull American Marc Jacobs. Put him in Armani and he's a changed model.

Fashion is as much a racket as the art market.

Sustainable fashion is in now. No one buys new clothes. It’s either thrift shop or trade.

Who the fuck is still wearing aviator frames? lol
| by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 28, 2024 1:07 AM |
Linen trenchcoat: $5,000. Silk shirt: $880. Brown tweed vest: $2,300.
It costs $8,180 to look like that.

Aviator frames have never really gone out of fashion, R11.

| by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 28, 2024 5:30 PM |
Everything's made in China, anyway.
| by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 28, 2024 5:39 PM |
Not everything, R24. Not really nice stuff.

I'm not basing this on anything more than anecdotal evidence, but "fashion" has definitely eroded - the willingness to spend money, the effort to put together "looks," the need to fashionable, the belief that certain situations call for different looks, the desire to stand out. BUT, I do still see people who are decked out and look great/cool/unique in any number of contexts. It's just more random, and the people surrounding them in whatever setting they're in will be less uniformly fashionable as in generations past.

Expect shorter shorts for men this year.

I would like to see that model showcasing R27's prediction.
| by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 28, 2024 6:21 PM |
R27 As long as we're not assaulted again by the sight of men in pedal pushers and clam diggers. About 20 years ago the Australians tried to make 'em a thing on men. Fortunately and like Kylie, they just didn't catch on in the USA. Gratefully.
Shorter shorts = good
Shorter pants = bad.
Clam diggers = really bad
