International treasure Carol Burnett

Is now a year OLDER than Mother Dexter from Phyllis was when she died!

I'm so glad we had this time together, Carol. No, really!

I hated when Mama's Family came back on the air, Eunice was nowhere to be found

by Anonymousreply 1February 8, 2021 8:05 PM

I adore her. Some of my fondest memories are of my mother, brother, and myself watching her show and laughing together. Of course Mama's Family sketches were our favorite, especially when Betty White guess starred.

Then she's so glad she had this time together... with her cosmetic surgeon!

by Anonymousreply 3February 8, 2021 8:07 PM

Oh, Fluffy!!!! Shut up you rabbit killer.

by Anonymousreply 4February 8, 2021 8:10 PM

I’ve heard it said that older women make better lovers... and, indeed, it is true.

by Anonymousreply 5February 8, 2021 8:38 PM

Too bad she's saddled with taking care/custody of her grandchild at her age.

Carol and her third husband Brian Miller, 23 years younger than her (although he sure as hell doesn't look it).

R12 he looks like a serial killer

by Anonymousreply 13February 8, 2021 9:03 PM

Loved her back in the day but as far as treasures go, she's national not international.

by Anonymousreply 14February 8, 2021 9:24 PM

I was about to post the same thing as r14.

I think the British may have also watched The Carol Burnett Show, but she's really mostly an American institution (as is often true with most famous American comedians--comedy doesn't travel well unless it's slapstick, like Buster Keaton or Jerry Lewis).

by Anonymousreply 15February 8, 2021 9:27 PM

Some of it is still very funny - but some of it aged

by Anonymousreply 17February 9, 2021 12:54 AM

I bet that one earlobe is dragging the floor by now with all that fucking tugging for the dead grandmother.

by Anonymousreply 18February 9, 2021 1:10 AM

R6, Two of her three daughters became drug addicts.

Thanks, Mom.

by Anonymousreply 19February 9, 2021 1:13 AM

I wish she'd do Eunice one more time.

by Anonymousreply 20February 9, 2021 1:14 AM

Every time Carol is interviewed, she tells the SAME stories.

I wish she’d do Julie one more time.

Me too. Her funeral.

by Anonymousreply 24February 9, 2021 1:31 AM

I don't find her funny anymore and I thought she was hilarious when I was a kid. The 70s in the worst way.

by Anonymousreply 25February 9, 2021 1:32 AM

Mother Dexter was only 85? She looked 95 at least.

The reruns of the early shows are almost unwatchable. Had it not been for the Family Segments, it's likely The Carol Burnett Show would be as forgotten as Laugh in or The Smother Brothers.

by Anonymousreply 28February 9, 2021 2:47 AM

Are the full hour shows being re-run, r28, or the 30 minute Carol & Friends? Carol, herself, said some of the sketches weren't good.

by Anonymousreply 30February 9, 2021 2:56 AM

smothers brothers forgotten, really?

R30, they're showing the entire early shows, musical numbers included. I see them in the guide and stop and watch for a few minutes and really can't take much more. Burnett herself was an irritating performer in the beginning.

by Anonymousreply 32February 9, 2021 3:15 AM

International treasure? For what is she really known internationally? John Huston's terrible Annie, and guest parts in Glee and Desperate Housewives? The Carol Burnett Show didn't air in many countries. She isn't famous as Lucille Ball, Mary Tyler Moore or any of the Golden Girls outside the US. But The Carol Burnett Show Official account at Youtube finally delivers anyone an option to see parts of it now.

by Anonymousreply 33February 9, 2021 3:31 AM

I think the Eunice sketches, As the Stomach Turns, Nora Desmond, and the Funk and Mundane parody of Lunt and Fontaine hold up really well and are still extremely funny. So are some of the movie takeoffs, especially Mildred Fierce. Other sketches, not so much. Harvey was pure brilliance.

by Anonymousreply 34February 9, 2021 3:35 AM

Like Lucille Ball she's known as real bitch off camera.

by Anonymousreply 35February 9, 2021 3:36 AM

^^ I've never heard anyone say she behaved like a bitch. Details, please.

[quote] Every time Carol is interviewed, she tells the SAME stories.

For all that she did in her career, she has not done anything significant since 1990 or so (yes, some short lasting things here and there) and everyone asks her the same damn thing, so let the old bag dine out on the well polished gems.

Love me some Carol! She is certainly a candidate for one of the best all-round entertainers of the 20th Century. She always radiated pure joy and love of entertaining.

I worked with a man who was one on The Carol Burnett Show’s principle dancers. He said she was every bit as lovely as she seems. He didn’t have a bad word to say about her.
