One of my favorite films.
A bizarre coincidence, because I just had a strange craving to re-watch my Alien blu-ray for scares. I just turned it off at the dinner table scene because I don't want to go to bed with the chest-burster in my mind!

| by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 8, 2017 7:10 AM |
Smith's Distilled London Dry Gin, r8.
I actually took some screenshots from my Blu Ray copy of Elm Street for you. But I cannot find any "Smith's" brand gin on the internet. So it's either a fictional brand, or something that went out of business, or an obscure, local brand somewhere.
Ronee Blakley has another bottle of it in the scene where Nancy tucks her into bed with the rear label showing.
I can't upload the screen shots to ImageShack for some reason. Maybe ImageShack doesn't take png's?
| by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 8, 2017 6:11 PM |
R9 Thank you so much 😃! Also thank you for the info regarding the brand. Normally, when a brand is in a movie it appears as a trivia question on a super fan site and when I didn't see it mentioned I got uber curious.
I was watching Nightmare on Elm Street ( the remake) and decided to check and see did anyone respond to my question. Indeed! someone did.
I've been wondering for years what that brand was. Thank you so much ! 😃

No because I'm watching My Own Private Idaho.

I've met the entire cast of this movie at conventions (except for Depp, of course) and they're all really nice (Amanda Wyss and Heather Langenkamp are complete dolls). It's the only time Freddy was truly scary.

Jsu (Nick Corri) was on drugs when they filmed this. In the Never Sleep Ahsin documentary, he said he was high during the scene where Nancy visits him in prison.

Nope. I've got a DVR full up with Alfred from TCM's Hitchcock fest of several weeks ago. And one last slice of home-made apple pie. No more Blue Bunny to a la mode it with, alas. I know, I'm typing as fat as I can.
What's the story on White Castle? I think you can buy them in freezer packs now, never tried them. I remember an interview with Chaka Khan (1970s) and she mentioned being a fan of them at some point.

I'm sure most babygays were lusting after Jsu and Johhny, but I had my eyes set on the actor who played Heather Langstrumpenkampfen's father. Yup, I had a bit of a daddy complex.
The sequel is fun too, mostly because of all the gay elements and Meryl's doppelganger playing Jesse's girlfriend.

You mean NOTED actor John Saxon? You've never heard of him outside of this film?
| by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 6, 2017 5:52 AM |
Robert Englund has stated that the film was green lit solely on Saxon's and Blakely's name recognition. Ronee had previously scored an Oscar nom for Nashville, and John had been acting since the '50s. He was a heartthrob and a western actor.

Rod was so hot. I first saw this movie when I was 12 and I really really wanted to grow up to be tall and slim like Rod because I loved the way he looked in his jeans,no shirt, and leather jacket. I wanted to pull that look off.
...Didn't happen :(
| by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 6, 2017 6:38 AM |
No, r19, the bottle label says "Smith's" and it's a totally different design from "Sipsmith's." I searched the web for the exact label and Google doesn't have it.
I have no idea if "Sipsmith's" changed its name or bought "Smith's" gin brand.
I tried to upload my Blu Ray pngs, but Imageshack wouldn't let me do it. Stream or play a good copy of Elm Street and just pause it on the scenes of the bottle. There's the one Nancy destroys when she says, "Screw sleep!" then another Ronee Blakley is drinking in bed when Nancy tucks her in for the last time.

How does one pronounce the name Jsu ?
I recall someone mentioning somewhere that because Ronee's character's alcoholism is a major plot point, in part arguably leading to her death, they made up a vodka label that would sound generic enough to pass for the real thing.

Ronee Blakely is absolutely a terrible actress in this movie. I can't believe she was a big deal before this. Maybe she was just phoning the performance in. For me it's a toss about between Nightmare 1 and 4/The Dream Master. Heather Langenkamp was bad ass.

I am not trolling you, R57. I am a huge Elm Street fan and saw it many years after the initial release. I was born in the 80's and was not familiar with Ronee Blakely before. I've seen Elm Street 1 several times. I saw it at a outdoor summer movie event a few years ago with some friends. Whenever she came on screen, the audience started laughing and people were saying how terrible she was compared to the rest of the cast.
As others have said, Elm Street 4 was the highest grossing of the franchise. It was a solid cast, awesome soundtrack, and tapped into peak late 80's MTV audience. Not as scary as the original, but I love it. 3 was really good too.
| by Anonymous | reply 63 | May 8, 2021 4:52 PM |
Nothing will top the original (Freddy was his scariest), but I’m partial to all the ones with Heather and part 4.
| by Anonymous | reply 64 | May 8, 2021 5:11 PM |
I first saw this movie when I was 11 years old and at the time I was essentially a latch key kid in the sense that my parents left for work before I left for school and they returned from work after I had already been home for several hours.
For at least a year after I watched this movie, I was TERRIFIED to be in the house alone. Even during broad daylight.
I wonder how it holds up, since it’s been years since I have watched it, and Freddy as a horror character was almost immediately watered down and became more of a comic foil in the sequels.
But man, this first movie really did a number on me. The scene where his arms extend in the alley, my God.

I think you're the same old DL Horror Loon who went ballistic after multiple posters rejected your assessment of Blakely's performance in last year's Heather Langenkamp Thread, r63.
If DL posters want to get a whiff of r63's personal vendetta against Ronee Blakely and watch just how unhinged and personally deranged she gets when refuted, they should scroll down to Reply #53 in the thread linked below.
My favorite part was when we disproved the Blakely Hater with positive critics' reviews of her performance and video interviews with the producers of NOES who state plainly that Ronee's involvement helped secure the funding for the film. Blakeley Hater went into a FULL-BLOWN, ASPIE-CON LEVEL 9 MELTDOWN.😂🤣😂🤣
Then it was:
[quote]I dramatized [Reply #64] post for a friend while beating my hands on the table. We're still laughing.
Now it is:
[quote]I saw it at a outdoor summer movie event a few years ago with some friends. Whenever she came on screen, the audience started laughing and people were saying how terrible she was.
These. Never. Happened. I'll believe it if and when r63 can post a link to a credible media report of an outdoor screening where audiences singled out Blakeley for jeering. Let's see a photo of your ticket stubs or the transaction statement from your bank when the screening was charged. I don't believe you have friends, either. You're going to have to post receipts for ALL of this stuff.
The DL Horror Loon threw the same kind of petulant tantrums when others disagreed with its fawning adoration for HALLOWEENS 4 and 5, THE EXORCIST 3 plus TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 1 alone. It really has no tolerance for any viewpoint that diverges from its own shitty taste, which makes for hilarious Troll Fails and meltdowns.

RE: Part 4's supposed preeminence:
Sequels generate box office based on the reviews and expectations set up by customers' experience with the PREVIOUS film. In other words, ELM STREET 4 succeeded because ELM STREET 3 was well-liked. The fans thought they were going to get more of the same.
What's really telling is that ELM STREET 5 only took in $22 million at the box office. That's less than half of the performance of ELM STREET 4 and it was all because ELM STREET 4 SUCKED!!!! Audiences figured Freddy had jumped the shark.
Critics hated PART 4 too, so quit trying to polish a turd.

R67 DL is filled with these sad psychotics. Making bullshit claims like "everyone" laughed when she came on-screen. Fucking right. I was embarrassed for how bad Heather was. That part when she was supposed to cry in the police station taking about how Tina died. Horrible. Plus that huge honking zit on her face. Yuck. Depp was superlative in his first role EVER. A total natural on-screen. The latin boy was as bad as Heather. Before Wes Craven died he was talking about Johnny Depp on Twitter and how he'd have no career if he wasn't cast in NOES. I told him no way. He'd have had another break out role. That is not how history works. A million people might've been rejected from the first NOES and no doubt their careers are fine.
| by Anonymous | reply 69 | May 9, 2021 8:02 AM |
Part 4 was excellent. At least as good as Part 3. Harlin had some very good ideas and the kills were good. Tuesday Knight sucked ass as Kristin. I hated her acting. The ones who played her dad and brother were also terrible actors. So a trifecta of suckitude. The other actors were good. The one who played Alice was great as the final girl and her fight w Freddy was cool. This was the first Nightmare I saw in the theatre and the movie was well anticipated. Part 5 was horrible. That is when the franchise fell apart. Part 6 was horrible. Part 7 was meh w lots of really bad actors like Heather's son and husband. Horrible. Freddy vs Jason was horrible too. Ridiculous concept and totally jumped the shark. Part 1-4 are the only watchable ones. Skip the rest.

I rewatched Nightmare last Halloween and was surprised/disappointed that Heather Langenkamp's performance was not as good as I remembered. I wouldn't go so far as to call her bad, but it wasn't a strong performance until the last act. It's kind of funny that it's in the early parts of the film, when she's playing a regular teen doing regular teen things, that she is kind of awkward and unconvincing.
It's still a great movie though, and Nancy is such a great character.

Tina's death scene was very well done! There is a whole behind the scenes on youtube. I think having to rely on building mechanisms to create the effects vs. CGI lends a more realistic feel. I believe the room was also used in Glen's kill. I think it was on a crank where they were able to flip it upside down.
| by Anonymous | reply 86 | May 9, 2021 8:27 PM |
R84 That is fucked up since Millennial turds have grown up with nothing but CGI. To me CGI effects are not real and have no value. Practical effects actually take some effort and ingenuity rather than 100 nerds on typewriters. Fuck CGI.
| by Anonymous | reply 87 | May 9, 2021 8:43 PM |
Practical effects beat CGI every time. There is no contest.
The spinning room used in Tina’s death was indeed also used in Glen’s death scene, and in Breakin’ 2 when Turbo dances on the ceiling.

| by Anonymous | reply 89 | May 9, 2021 8:48 PM |
Amanda Wyss was in the scene, but there was a stunt double used for when Tina falls from the ceiling to the floor.
Offsite Link| by Anonymous | reply 90 | May 9, 2021 8:55 PM |
For me, the only special effects that don't hold up are Freddy's stretching arms in the alley, which you can tell are mechanical and the crew at the time didn't think would look good. Also, when Freddy pulls Ronee Blakely through the tiny window of the front door at the end of the movie, you can totally tell someone is just yanking on a mannequin.
Everything else looks convincing to me. Freddy slicing his fingers off, Tina flung across the ceiling; Johnny Depp's blood geyser. I will say that Freddy's burn makeup got MUCH better in ELM STREETS 2 & 3.
But I think atmosphere and suspense make it very scary in any decade. It's all about the claustrophobic boiler room, editing, confusion and darkness.
| by Anonymous | reply 91 | May 9, 2021 9:11 PM |
Wes Craven said he read the script for the sequel and it was poor, he didn't want any part of it. When he saw the final product, he said #2 looked more like a series of (bad) scenes rather than a cohesive film.

I have the Blu Ray NIGHTMARE box set and all the classic movies look immaculate. It would be nice if they come out with a 4K + box set that includes FREDDY V. JASON and the remake, even though those movies aren't great.
Myself, I'm slowly working through every episode of the FREDDY'S NIGHTMARES TV show, which also needs to be released on Blu Ray. Somehow, they made 44 hour-long episodes of corny crap that the internet allows me to watch now, as the TV show was cancelled in my area after just a couple of months back in the '80s. The episodes mostly suck — the beginning of Mike DeLuca's meddling and vulgarizing of the franchise. Not scary at all and not within the rules established by Wes Craven.
But it's fun camp and something a real fan should do. There's a high number of FRIDAY THE 13TH actors in the casts, too, including actors with big parts in Jason movies like Lars Park Lincoln and David Kagen.
Plus, there's amazing early work from huge stars like Brad Pitt, Mariska Hargitay and John Cameron Mitchell! Nice to see the shit they had to shovel before making it big.

Joes was a total pussy hound and never learned. Hot video vixens are his kryptonite. The sexy nurse with the tongues in part 3 that has him tied to a bed over hell and the hot poster babe in his waterbed that does him in in part 4. "How's this for a wet dream, bwahahahahahah"

R107 He was just sore from taking it up the ass from the interns, and wanted to try something else.

[Quote] Ronney Mara as Nancy and that hot chick as Kris the Tina substitute in the remake really shit the bed.
Rooney is definitely not girl next door material. But Kris and Katie actually look very similar. Maybe Rooney and Katie should have swapped roles.

The remake sucked and I love Katie Cassidy.
| by Anonymous | reply 110 | May 12, 2021 7:11 AM |
They should have made Amanda Wyss the final girl. Wyss is a much better actress than Langenkamp.
However, I think they wanted the All American Girl or Girl Next Door, and Langenkamp had that look.

Heather was fine in 1 and 3. But they were asking alot of her in New Nightmare.

Heather is a fine actress. She was hilarious as the sex-crazed religious “Marie” in the woefully underrated sitcom Just The Ten of Us.

Since you cunts are talking 'bout it, I watched 2, 3, 4, (which are all great) and fast forwarded through 5. 5 is unwatchable and a total 0 of a movie. I hate everything about it. The deaths were not scary, just ridiculous. The kid was as annoying as fuck. I wanted to push him screaming into a live volcano. Tonally the movie was off. Alice was still good even in this dreck. I just started part 6, directed by lesbian Rachel Talalay. It is whimsical but way better than 5.

I love people responding to OP's "jealous?" when he asked it four years ago.
| by Anonymous | reply 115 | May 15, 2021 1:46 AM |
Part 6 is crap. Absolute rubbish. Part 5 is bad too, but I put it above the garbage that is Freddy's Dead because it at least follows a similar template as part 4 and has Alice and Dan.
| by Anonymous | reply 116 | May 15, 2021 2:55 AM |
Part 5 at least gave us shirtless Danny Hassel and the shirtless bodybuilder who played him in the opening credits.
It also gave us that really imaginative comic book Freddy sequence in black and white, which was cool. 1/4 stars.
The only good thing about Part 6 is Johnny Depp's cameo, which was hilarious. .But it was supposed to be a horror movie and it felt more like a corny variety show. 0.125/4 stars for Johnny's gag alone.
| by Anonymous | reply 117 | May 15, 2021 6:46 AM |
The same bodybuilder who doubled for Dan during the opening credits of The Dream Child also played Super Freddy.

I checked out who on this thread defended Heather's horrible acting in part 1 and it was Jabba. Figures. Psychotic bitch will defend anyone that sucks ass.
| by Anonymous | reply 119 | May 15, 2021 8:34 AM |
The psycho would be the asshole who checks out someone’s history just because the person defended someone’s acting. Get help, R119. You’ve been abused and it shows.
| by Anonymous | reply 120 | May 15, 2021 9:00 AM |
Fuck off, Jabba. No one gives a fuck what you think. Hey, that's a line from part 3. Jabba sucks ass. Jabba sucks ass.
| by Anonymous | reply 121 | May 15, 2021 9:36 AM |
Sure, you're not psycho at all. You just see things that aren't there and then stalk anyone else who doesn't see them.
That's why you're going to feel a tiny hurt in your arm and then relax for the rest of the day.

I re-watched 5 recently. I agree with everyone, with one exception. I thought the two kills of Danny and Greta were pretty gruesome and unique, especially Greta. Greta's kill ranks up there with Freddy as the puppeteer in part 3, but not iconic like Tina in 1. I also liked her character. Both of these happened in the beginning of the film and then it really lost steam.
| by Anonymous | reply 124 | May 15, 2021 5:41 PM |
R122 is Jabba using one of her dozens of sock accounts. I have Jabba blocked but I always check to see what threads she's polluting with her repulsive psychotic toxic cunt. She's always psychotic and always nonsensical. Like defending Heather's horrible acting in part 1. Anyway. I had to fast forward through parts 5-7. They are all absolute zeroes. The kills were boring and stupid, repeating previous better kills. In 5 and 6 especially, Freddy was as annoying as fuck. He wasn't scary and had zero connection to the Freddy of part 1. His one liners were weak and unfunny. I'm still trying to get through part 7. Everyone is a complete and total cunt. Especially the kid. I have never said: fucking cunt! to a character a million times like in this horrid movie. 7 is definitely the worst. Until you get to Freddy vs Jason, which is worse than 7.
| by Anonymous | reply 125 | May 15, 2021 6:02 PM |
Which one was 7? The one with Roseanne or the meta one with Heather L?
| by Anonymous | reply 126 | May 15, 2021 6:05 PM |
R125 is a complete lunatic and obviously the victim of some sort of incest, rape or bashing. Poor thing.
And Heather shines in all three films she stars in.

This has always been one of the more imaginative horror franchises. Even the bad sequels have a few moments or set pieces that make them worth watching. Freddy's Dead is probably my least favorite, but even that one has some inspired moments. Nothing will ever be scarier than the first two. Something about the way Freddy's lit and his makeup are really scary. They also manipulate Robert Englund's voice to make it deeper and more menacing. Some of the other sequels forget to do this and he comes across as more comic.
| by Anonymous | reply 128 | May 15, 2021 6:31 PM |
Everything about Freddy in 5 and 6 were horrible. Voice. Make up. Acting. Flat unfunny jokes. They completely destroyed all that was good about him in the first 4 movies.
| by Anonymous | reply 129 | May 16, 2021 6:36 AM |
Johnny Depp's finest role.
| by Anonymous | reply 130 | May 16, 2021 6:38 AM |
Forget Freddy, I just want to get busy with Joey on his waterbed.
| by Anonymous | reply 131 | May 16, 2021 7:08 AM |
7 was WES CRAVEN'S NEW NIGHTMARE, the meta one with Heather and one of the best installments of the franchise.
It's Robert Englund's favorite NIGHTMARE and a precursor to SCREAM.

I watched Part 4 the other night and it holds up well. It was very imaginative and some great set pieces.
Alice was a great final girl.
And who doesn't love Brooke Bundy as Kristen's mother. "KRISTEN!! KRISTEN!!!!"

I'm not going to lie, I love the soundtrack to Elm St 4, including, and especially the intro song sung by Tuesday Knight. I found it on Spotify randomly at the gym and I still think it's really good. I guess it was a single when the movie was released. I also love "Anything, Anything" by DramaRama. I think of Alice with her nunchucks.

I also love that Nightmare 4 uses Sinead O'Connor's Put Your Hands On Me. Great song.
| by Anonymous | reply 141 | May 20, 2021 3:16 AM |
Yes! I made a playlist the other day and I included that as well. I completely forgot about that until I went down the soundtrack list.. I never knew Sinead sang that. That's a great song.
| by Anonymous | reply 142 | May 20, 2021 3:18 AM |
The whole pt 4 soundtrack is great, including the Go West song “Don’t Be Afraid of Your Dreams” and the previously hard to find “Pride and Joy” by Joe Lamont. Here is a fan-made complication featuring several songs that were in the film but weren’t included on the official soundtrack release.

Part 4 gets a lot of hate for really embracing funny Freddy, but the characters are all really engaging and likable and I love how Alice grows from wallflower to badass heroine. I really bought it.
