If I go to Mexico City, will I get sick?

I would really love to see Mexico City but, from people I’ve talked to, stomach infections are very hard to avoid even if you’re safe. Anyone with experience traveling south of the border without getting Montezuma’s?

by Anonymousreply 37November 23, 2018 8:13 PM

Probably. Try not to drink any water, including ice. Make sure everything you drink comes out of sealed bottles and all food is well cooked.

by Anonymousreply 1November 21, 2018 11:21 PM

I'd be more concerned about crime than stomach ailments.

by Anonymousreply 2November 21, 2018 11:25 PM

Most likely you will get explosive diarrhea. And there might be an earthquake. Not necessarily in that order.

by Anonymousreply 3November 21, 2018 11:26 PM

Pretty good restaurants and street food, just be careful about water.

by Anonymousreply 4November 21, 2018 11:33 PM

Mexico City is awesome— sort of like NYC! The food is great (not that Tex-mex crap you get in the US). I’ve been twice and have never gotten sick. Just drink bottle water and sodas.

Be sure to go to the famous history museum. It’s wonderfully laid out.

I love Mexico City. Some of the best food in the world. I've never gotten sick, OP, but I have a cast iron stomach. With friends who have gone and spent longer than a week, the majority have not gotten sick, just a couple have.

by Anonymousreply 6November 21, 2018 11:51 PM

No street food, no food unless prepared in fully-enclosed and temperature-controlled spaces, no tap water. Take Immodium.

by Anonymousreply 7November 21, 2018 11:57 PM

I really hope you do, OP.

No offence.

by Anonymousreply 8November 21, 2018 11:58 PM

The air pollution is what got me. The pollution combined with the altitude had me short of breath the whole time I was there.

That was several years ago, so maybe it's gotten better.

by Anonymousreply 9November 21, 2018 11:59 PM

I've been to Tijuana and Baja California (in Mexico) several times. Never did get sick. I've drunk the water (not wise, I know) and eaten the food. If you're nervous, stick to bottled water and Coca-Cola or whatever you like. Bring Immodium and Pepto Bismol.

by Anonymousreply 10November 22, 2018 12:19 AM

If you go to Mexico City, OP, go to Cafe de Tacuba where the waitresses dress like milkmaids and use a very elegant pouring technique for your coffee/tea. Order the enchiladas - they're very good! There are better, more experimental restaurants all over the city, but this one is worth it for the history and ambiance.

I've been in another place north of Mexico City 5 times (San Miguel de Allende, Gto.) Another tip is brush your teeth with bottled water. I never got sick, sick, but I was kind of queasy all the time the first time I went. Once I started being really careful about the water, even when brushing my teeth, I was fine. Never eat street food also--it's hard because it looks good but you're better off eating food from restaurants. People who live there filter their water.

When I visit Mexico, I go to Chedraui supermarket and buy a lot of mineral water. I eat all kinds of street foods and seafood and ceviche, I never get sick. I pretty much stick to bottled mineral water, Mexican Coca Cola, and the wonderful South American sauvignon blancs for beverages. Works for me.

Keep your mouth and eyes shut in the shower too.

by Anonymousreply 14November 22, 2018 1:53 AM

No OP, but you might get kidnapped and beheaded.

by Anonymousreply 15November 22, 2018 1:54 AM

I agree with the above posts. Take precautions and you’ll be fine. It’s an amazing place! Brilliant museums (go to Frida Kahlo’s house, make an appointment for it in advance) and historic places (take a day trip to Teotihuacan for the pyramids.) It’s very affordable, so you can eat at nice restaurants cheaply if you want to avoid the street food. And go to Tom’s, a fab gay bar that will allow you to be however slutty you want to be.

by Anonymousreply 16November 22, 2018 2:05 AM

Don’t breathe the air, drink the water or eat the food and you’ll be fine.

Maybe you should stay stateside and visit Flint, Michigan. Or how about a weekend in Pittsburgh? Or Milwaukee?

by Anonymousreply 19November 22, 2018 4:18 AM

Just make sure you have good health insurance

by Anonymousreply 21November 22, 2018 6:46 AM

Tom's Leather Bar is fun.

You can absolutely do Mexico City and not get sick. Here’s a tip: if you see ice that is tubular with a hole through the center, that means it’s filtered and safe to put in a drink.

The Zona Rosa neighborhood is popping at night. Boy Bar, Kinky Bar and El Tallar are must go’s. I never felt unsafe anywhere in that city.

Also, see the Ballet Folklorico. I thought it would be a touristy kind of show but it’s actually quite wonderful.

Plus you’ll meet some of the nicest people in the world.

by Anonymousreply 24November 22, 2018 1:46 PM

Be careful of those large bottles of water available in hotel lobbies for tourists. I saw a guy out back filling some of those from a garden hose connected to a faucet. Drink carbonated beverages so you know they have not been opened.

by Anonymousreply 25November 22, 2018 3:53 PM

I'm usually good until about 4 days in. Then I just want to get home. I try every precaution but can't resist some of the delicious food items available and give in!

by Anonymousreply 26November 22, 2018 3:56 PM

^^Exactly. And why would anyone trust ice cubes just because they're shaped as hollow tubes? They're not packaged in the US, FFS. They could be made from tap water as well. Stupid.

by Anonymousreply 27November 22, 2018 3:58 PM

Mexico City is one of the great food cities of the world. Everybody's stomach is different.. hope for your sake, OP, that you have no problems because everything is too good to pass up.

I've tried twice before to get reservations to this place, Pujol, but the timing has never worked out. Hope I can make it there next time!

Only if you're allergic to smegma. You might be able to get an inoculation for that though. Ask your doctor.

by Anonymousreply 30November 22, 2018 5:14 PM

Get an Rx for Lomotil before you go. Bring Immodium too. Perhaps I'm sensitive, but have always gotten a bit sick there. (I'm no ice fiend either, so skipped that and still got ill) Pepto tablets are great too, as they're anti-helminthic. I bring all three just in case.

Kidnapping and crime is rampant and they target tourists and business executives. That football player from Williams college stopped there and was promptly murdered. Be careful with cabs and hired cars, and the police are behind more than half of all cases. Have fun!

I went to the house Leon Trotsky was killed in by the assasin sent by Stalin. Very interesting communist history. It’s now a museum run by modern day communists. Very few Americans visit so they were excited to see me. Also went to see a bullfight but after watching a bull get knifed, I left, but only because it was gory and gruesome, but it was boring
