Seems Joel's Wikipedia page has been edited several times over the years both in terms of his sexual orientation and his cause of death.

Thanks to the Wayback Machine, we can examine earlier years. This is the 2016 entry:

They became close friends on the set when they played the lovers Julian Cannell and Vicki Paisley in Somerset. He chose to share his sexual orientation only with his friends and co-workers.[3]

[quote]Crothers died from AIDS-related lymphoma on November 6, 1985.[4] His remains were cremated and scattered in Lake George, New York.

This is what it said in 2012:
