[quote]I assume she's a case of neptism
Nepotism might get someone a supporting role on a sitcom, it doesn't get someone a starring role in a Broadway show because of the cost.
I have absolutely no interest in a new production of Funny Girl, even if Miss Streisand herself had agreed to star in a revival. That would be a horror show. I am not offended, as some of you are, that another very different kind of actress is doing it. I have no vendetta against Beanie Feldstein for committing such a crime, so I can't dislike her.
The only thing I have an ounce of emotion over - the name. If my grandmother was alive I'd have to spend hours and days explaining why this woman has the name Beanie.

They're marketing her like a Nickelodeon star, which she's way too old for. She doesn't seem to have a niche.
Her brother got typecast for a long time, but there was an endless supply of comedy roles for him. Then he turned out to be a solid dramatic actor and moved up the ladder.
Beanie was born to be the lead in Hairspray, and comes across as being a sweet woman. Otherwise I don't see what she can do.

Yes, as likeable as I think they both are as actors, she and her brother are both stealth nepotism kids. Their mother was a costume designer to the stars and their father was an accountant to many many rock bands, including Guns N Roses. They're wealthy and have many connections. Nothing new there.
| by Anonymous | reply 47 | April 26, 2022 4:28 AM |
"I feel bad about disliking Beanie Feldstein but I do."
I detest both her and her worthless brother, and I don't feel a bit bad about it. They both suck ass and the only reason they have careers is because of nepotism. What must it be like for someone to know deep down that the only reason they're famous is because their parents have connections? They should both be stuffed into a cannon (should a girthy enough barrel be found) and fired through the ozone layer.
| by Anonymous | reply 48 | April 26, 2022 4:37 AM |
If it weren't for nepotism and connections, Beanie Feldstein would be DL fave Melissa Miller.
| by Anonymous | reply 49 | April 26, 2022 4:38 AM |
I think she's a lot more talented than her brother (didn't mind her in Booksmart), but I can't really get past the classic rich spoiled Jewish New Yorker princess nepotism. The family are such star fuckers and desperate for fame. And they've bought it. Without having to put in the actual work, study, and years building up their resume that the much more talented performers have.
I honestly don't see her as being that different to a Zosia Mamet or Lena Dunham in terms of talent or the way she came to fame. She's just less problematic and looks cleaner. I don't mind AS much if they do a Liza Minnelli or Laura Dern or whoever (even Dakota Johnson and Margaret Qualley are putting in the work and getting better) and prove they have something of their own talent or presence, but i'm yet to see it from Beanie.
| by Anonymous | reply 50 | April 26, 2022 4:38 AM |
Zosia Mamet is execrable. Ugly as dogshit, a shrill unpleasant voice and does not connect to any actor in any scene she does. Godawful case of nepotism.

If Beanie had played Miss Marmelstein in a revival of "I Can Get It For You Wholesale," on the other hand, she would be the toast of Broadway right now, because she's funny and charismatic. She's an ideal soubrette. I could imagine her as Ellie in "Show Boat" singing "Life Upon the Wicked Stage," or Carrie Pippridge in "Carousel" singing "When I Marry Mr. Snow."

I despise her immensely but ... she's pretty great at doing "her thing."
I liked her in, "The Flight Attendant" and even on "Girls." As long as she stays in the range of abrasive to bored she's pretty good.
I can't say the same thing about Billie Lourd who I like as a "personality" but I don't like as an actress, ever.

As for Beanie Feldstein, like some other posters, I like her but this was a horrible misstep and maybe she'll be honest with herself and ask if she really does have the skill to pull something off before doing it.
It's actually kind of incredible that Leah Michele would have genuinely been a much, much, much, better choice.

Wow. Scathing reviews of Beanie's Funny Girl:
[quote] But her character — and Feldstein’s performance — never goes far beyond the sentimental, tiresome and not-exactly-of-the-moment cliche of the woman who can’t stop loving her man, even after nearly every character on stage (not to mention the audience) knows it’s doomed -- Variety
[quote] Without an extraordinary lead performance, “Funny Girl” doesn’t work – which is unfortunately the case here. Vocally, Feldstein is strained and nasal and unable to handle power solos like “I’m the Greatest Star,” “People,” “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” and “The Music That Makes Me Dance.” She also overplays the comedy and resorts to mugging. (I question how Feldstein could even be cast as Fanny in a high school or theater camp production.) -- AMNY
[quote] Broadway and West End veteran Karimloo... is a gracious, almost liquid performer, his hard-gambling Nick equal parts charm and melancholy. He gazes at Feldstein's Fanny with real affection, but the legendary chemistry that led to Streisand and Omar Sharif falling in love both on and off screen in the smash 1968 movie adaptation registers here as the warm flicker of friendship, not the fireworks of sex. -- Entertainment Weekly
[quote] The casting makes sense on paper; Feldstein brings an endearing everygirl to Fanny.... But this is a musical, one with some full-tilt belting, and her singing just isn’t up to par. Paper-thin, reedy in the higher registers and overly nasal throughout, Feldstein’s voice is noticeably untextured compared to the rest of the cast. The role that gave Streisand some of her staples – People and Don’t Rain on My Parade, Funny Girl’s showstopper that Feldstein visibly musters every ounce of strength to blare – requires a power singer. Feldstein simply isn’t one. -- The Guardian

When I was in high school, everyone knew that for the senior superlatives in the yearbook one of the most popular girls who had a slight mustache problem was voted "Hairiest" because everyone voted her for that., But because one of her poular friends was yearbook editor, they omitted that category--and somehow she ended up listed under "Best Smile," even though no one could remember voting her for that.
I think Beanie getting this part was the same sort of thing. Her popular friends (Judd Apatow, Lena Dunham) and her family called around and pulled a few strings.
But in the end, as my grandpa used to say, you can't squeeze blood from a turnip.
| by Anonymous | reply 65 | April 26, 2022 5:37 AM |
I don't think Beanie got it out of pity. I think the relative success of the London production made them think: 1) We don't need a powerhouse singer. 2) Likeable will do. And they probably thought her Monica Lewinsky would be equivalent to Darren Criss' Andrew C. in terms of reception/zeitgeist, thus propelling the box office.

If Feldstein’s ambition or her father’s largesse brought this about she has only herself to blame. It must be a very lonely place on that stage knowing the grown-ups see her for what she is and isn’t.

It's hilarious how pretentious she is - and this is after opening night, when everyone else has clearly realised the truth, but not Beanie:
[quote]“I’m a woman who needs to be distracted,” she said, thoughtful and sincere with her words. “Really, I’m in a state of shock, if I have to be honest. It’s my dream coming true, my whole life.”
[quote]“My passion and my commitment and my care for the story is an overwhelming sensation, which leads to perfectionism and passion and needing to do right by Fanny every second,” she unburdened, the lobby’s hush now a salve.
[quote]“At the beginning of the musical, I have 38 seconds to go from being Fanny in her mid-30s to being Fanny at 17. My wig is pulled and costume torn down, and there’s that Fanny that wants to be on stage, and that’s how I felt my whole life,” she told Variety.

Monica Lewinsky views herself as a sexpot. Look at her attention seeking clothing during the Clinton years, trying to make the most with what she has been given. Being the only one wearing a beret in pictures with the then POTUS clearly made her stand out.
Reminds me of teenage girls who were overlooked by boys so vowed to make up for it when given the opportunity.
Beanie is the complete opposite. She reflects the current trend of dressing so casual as to be inappropriate in photo ops. Or is she just trying to cover-up her body to ward off male attention?

I saw her on Broadway in Funny Girl last week, prior to this I had no opinion of her, but boy o boy what an awful performance she gave. The girl can't sing and her acting is so broad and hammy it was embarrassing.

| by Anonymous | reply 132 | April 29, 2022 1:28 PM |
Someone on another Beanie thread mentioned cabaret sweetheart Molly Pope as a good FG Fanny casting choice, boy do I agree. Sadly she stepped away from the business. In the late 90’s there was a couple FG workshops starring an absolute powerhouse singer and comic Becky Lynn Bayling, I seem to remember she was involved with Taylor Dane “maybe” production as a cover, but they kept her after the Dane led fizzled out. Anywho, she was fantastic. Unfortunately it never went anywhere and she sorta left the biz too.

Entertainment is full of far more egregious cases of nepotism than Beanie - look at Maude Apatow! At least Beanie seems somewhat endearing and does have some talent, unlike other children of celebs who buy their way to the front of the line. I think we could do far worse

R143 I’m not sure how to copy and paste the direct link to the post but I’ve copied and pasted the text from it:
“ Okay, everyone just stop it. No more Beanie bashing is going to be tolerated from this point onward. First, she auditioned for the role SIX times. No nepotism was involved with her casting. Second, she handled the role quite well. Third, anyone who continues to flame her is in violation of the first rule of this group. To continue to do so can get your comments removed and earn you a three day suspension. Want to try me? I strongly suggest you don’t. EOD.”

She's so gross. Frankly, she's one of those fat girls that you suspect is, well, maybe not so fresh down there.
Yet, if she had the voice, I might overlook it. Any production where Fanny can't belt is utterly pointless.

r146 Well that's the funniest thing isn't it? The fact that loon is going so far to defend her ironically just shows how shit he really knows she is. After all, if he actually believed what he says, he wouldn't need to shut down discussion like that. I'm going to guess he's a fattie and so feels some sort of kinship with her.

| by Anonymous | reply 153 | May 2, 2022 12:59 PM |
Beanie and Jonah are Feldsteins, so it's Jonah who is hiding.
As HuffPost advises, the siblings are a decade apart in age and are both Feldsteins, but Hill goes by his middle name. Their mother worked as a costume designer, while Dad was Guns 'N' Roses' accountant, so the kids grew up on the Hollywood fringes (via The Guardian).Apr 13, 2022

Take it as you will, evidently one of the reasons, or maybe the reason(?), for the Beanie constantly crying backstage during previews was she was terrified of catching Covid. Up until actual performances she was hardly ever in contact with the entire cast. Mayer kept much of her early rehearsals private, he knew to keep a lid on her limitations…
| by Anonymous | reply 161 | May 2, 2022 5:09 PM |
But there were video clips of the sitz probe. Thee we whole cast was together then, and Beanie seems fine. And there are - what, three or four songs that required much of the cast to stags them.
| by Anonymous | reply 162 | May 2, 2022 5:19 PM |
R162 sitz was press heavy, of course front and center. It’s not that she wasn’t rehearsed with the cast, but the contact was unusually limited. Waited until last possible put in, that being said, she’s very engaging with fellow cast herself, this feels more like Mayer kept her close to calm her anxiety.

| by Anonymous | reply 178 | May 4, 2022 3:51 PM |
This is a perfect example of what happens when you surround yourself with fawners who will never tell you the truth. I'm sure she has only been told how fabulous she is from childhood. Only her fawners had money and influence. They convinced her that she would be a big star and Beanie, never confronted by adversity, genuinely thought that she would be great in the role. She isn't, and reality has hit her hard. Oh, the fawners in her inner circle are rationalizing everything and refer only to the good reviews. But she knows. The best thing that could happen to her is that she finally realizes her limitations, regroups, and chooses projects that are suited for her, and not always listen to the hanger-on. If so, she could still have a very good career.

Do people dislike Beanie primarily because:
1. They think she's a beneficiary of nepotism
2. She was miscast as Fanny Brice
3. She didn't have enough Broadway experience to be in a show this identified with one person
4. She's fat
5. Deep down, DLers are just assholes
| by Anonymous | reply 189 | July 2, 2022 6:11 PM |
That should have been a poll, R189, to which I think the most popular response would have been "All of the above."
But thinking that it's mainly because DLers are assholes ignores the ample evidence we were given that she was wrong for the part in every way.
