I feel bad about disliking Beanie Feldstein but I do.

I think she has a sweet voice but nothing special. She's been training for musical comedy for over a decade.

I assume she's a case of neptism.

I can't get over her being fat although she'll probably lose it like her brother did.

I think she tries too hard to be charming.

Her dancing is dreadful per youtube.

I feel she is being foisted on us.

Am I too hard on her?

Nepotism might get someone a supporting role on a sitcom, it doesn't get someone a starring role in a Broadway show because of the cost.

I have absolutely no interest in a new production of Funny Girl, even if Miss Streisand herself had agreed to star in a revival. That would be a horror show. I am not offended, as some of you are, that another very different kind of actress is doing it. I have no vendetta against Beanie Feldstein for committing such a crime, so I can't dislike her.

The only thing I have an ounce of emotion over - the name. If my grandmother was alive I'd have to spend hours and days explaining why this woman has the name Beanie.

They're marketing her like a Nickelodeon star, which she's way too old for. She doesn't seem to have a niche.

Her brother got typecast for a long time, but there was an endless supply of comedy roles for him. Then he turned out to be a solid dramatic actor and moved up the ladder.

Beanie was born to be the lead in Hairspray, and comes across as being a sweet woman. Otherwise I don't see what she can do.

I think that, like her brother, she must be very good at ingratiating herself and plotting career movies. I think he's only mildly talented, too. She seems very sweet and naive, which iI'm sure she isn't. I assume Monica wanted her because she projects a kind of innocence.

Yes, as likeable as I think they both are as actors, she and her brother are both stealth nepotism kids. Their mother was a costume designer to the stars and their father was an accountant to many many rock bands, including Guns N Roses. They're wealthy and have many connections. Nothing new there.

I think she's a lot more talented than her brother (didn't mind her in Booksmart), but I can't really get past the classic rich spoiled Jewish New Yorker princess nepotism. The family are such star fuckers and desperate for fame. And they've bought it. Without having to put in the actual work, study, and years building up their resume that the much more talented performers have.

I honestly don't see her as being that different to a Zosia Mamet or Lena Dunham in terms of talent or the way she came to fame. She's just less problematic and looks cleaner. I don't mind AS much if they do a Liza Minnelli or Laura Dern or whoever (even Dakota Johnson and Margaret Qualley are putting in the work and getting better) and prove they have something of their own talent or presence, but i'm yet to see it from Beanie.

I grew to like her as Monica. But she just can't carry off "Funny Girl"--it's hard to think of someone who could.

If Beanie had played Miss Marmelstein in a revival of "I Can Get It For You Wholesale," on the other hand, she would be the toast of Broadway right now, because she's funny and charismatic. She's an ideal soubrette. I could imagine her as Ellie in "Show Boat" singing "Life Upon the Wicked Stage," or Carrie Pippridge in "Carousel" singing "When I Marry Mr. Snow."

I despise her immensely but ... she's pretty great at doing "her thing."

I liked her in, "The Flight Attendant" and even on "Girls." As long as she stays in the range of abrasive to bored she's pretty good.

I can't say the same thing about Billie Lourd who I like as a "personality" but I don't like as an actress, ever.

As for Beanie Feldstein, like some other posters, I like her but this was a horrible misstep and maybe she'll be honest with herself and ask if she really does have the skill to pull something off before doing it.

It's actually kind of incredible that Leah Michele would have genuinely been a much, much, much, better choice.

When I was in high school, everyone knew that for the senior superlatives in the yearbook one of the most popular girls who had a slight mustache problem was voted "Hairiest" because everyone voted her for that., But because one of her poular friends was yearbook editor, they omitted that category--and somehow she ended up listed under "Best Smile," even though no one could remember voting her for that.

I think Beanie getting this part was the same sort of thing. Her popular friends (Judd Apatow, Lena Dunham) and her family called around and pulled a few strings.

I don't think Beanie got it out of pity. I think the relative success of the London production made them think: 1) We don't need a powerhouse singer. 2) Likeable will do. And they probably thought her Monica Lewinsky would be equivalent to Darren Criss' Andrew C. in terms of reception/zeitgeist, thus propelling the box office.

Can you blame her? She auditioned and she PASSED the audition, when really, she shouldn't have. That's on the producers, not her.

She should continue to show up to every performance (aside from planned absences) until this production is put out of its misery. And she should suggest Dina Merrill as her vacation replacement.

If you watch that old CBS(?) spot about the theater camp she attended, they showed a segment from it during the recent feature on her in FG, she seemed “off”, almost on the spectrum level odd. She’s certainly acting like a giddy teen during her press appearances, she’s a strange energy.

Why OP? She’s in a particularly cut-throat industry. Hugely talented people fall by the wayside and yet this very well-connected, supremely ill-equipped lady gets to play a star making lead role on Broadway. Nepotism stinks but then again that’s show business.

If Feldstein’s ambition or her father’s largesse brought this about she has only herself to blame. It must be a very lonely place on that stage knowing the grown-ups see her for what she is and isn’t.

I read the reviews--what a whore you are, Rex Reed--and they come out in the same place as the OP. They all say her voice is inadequate but they can't quite hate her. I do think the poster who said she was on the spectrum was onto something.

It comes down to this--I would never avoid something because she has a supporting role but I would never watch something in which she has a starring role. I made that mistake in "How to Build a Girl" and never again. When she's able to play something other than a wide-eyed naif, I might change my mind but probably not.

Monica Lewinsky views herself as a sexpot. Look at her attention seeking clothing during the Clinton years, trying to make the most with what she has been given. Being the only one wearing a beret in pictures with the then POTUS clearly made her stand out.

Reminds me of teenage girls who were overlooked by boys so vowed to make up for it when given the opportunity.

Beanie is the complete opposite. She reflects the current trend of dressing so casual as to be inappropriate in photo ops. Or is she just trying to cover-up her body to ward off male attention?

I saw her on Broadway in Funny Girl last week, prior to this I had no opinion of her, but boy o boy what an awful performance she gave. The girl can't sing and her acting is so broad and hammy it was embarrassing.

Someone on another Beanie thread mentioned cabaret sweetheart Molly Pope as a good FG Fanny casting choice, boy do I agree. Sadly she stepped away from the business. In the late 90’s there was a couple FG workshops starring an absolute powerhouse singer and comic Becky Lynn Bayling, I seem to remember she was involved with Taylor Dane “maybe” production as a cover, but they kept her after the Dane led fizzled out. Anywho, she was fantastic. Unfortunately it never went anywhere and she sorta left the biz too.

Entertainment is full of far more egregious cases of nepotism than Beanie - look at Maude Apatow! At least Beanie seems somewhat endearing and does have some talent, unlike other children of celebs who buy their way to the front of the line. I think we could do far worse

Beanie and Jonah are Feldsteins, so it's Jonah who is hiding.

Take it as you will, evidently one of the reasons, or maybe the reason(?), for the Beanie constantly crying backstage during previews was she was terrified of catching Covid. Up until actual performances she was hardly ever in contact with the entire cast. Mayer kept much of her early rehearsals private, he knew to keep a lid on her limitations…

But there were video clips of the sitz probe. Thee we whole cast was together then, and Beanie seems fine. And there are - what, three or four songs that required much of the cast to stags them.

R162 sitz was press heavy, of course front and center. It’s not that she wasn’t rehearsed with the cast, but the contact was unusually limited. Waited until last possible put in, that being said, she’s very engaging with fellow cast herself, this feels more like Mayer kept her close to calm her anxiety.

This is a perfect example of what happens when you surround yourself with fawners who will never tell you the truth. I'm sure she has only been told how fabulous she is from childhood. Only her fawners had money and influence. They convinced her that she would be a big star and Beanie, never confronted by adversity, genuinely thought that she would be great in the role. She isn't, and reality has hit her hard. Oh, the fawners in her inner circle are rationalizing everything and refer only to the good reviews. But she knows. The best thing that could happen to her is that she finally realizes her limitations, regroups, and chooses projects that are suited for her, and not always listen to the hanger-on. If so, she could still have a very good career.
