I work as a supervisor for a Fortune 500 company. Not too high up, but I make 6 figures, generally enjoy my job, and get along well with all my coworkers, or so I thought. However, I was called into HR a few days ago for an emergency meeting where I was told there was a formal complaint lodged against me for hate speech. The complaint stated that I was blaring racist music and singing along to it. I was befuddled! While I do listen to music when I work (I make sure my office door is closed) I wouldn’t say that I blast it, and I only sing along on occasion. But, I only ever listen to show tunes or the occasional disco if I am in a real chipper mood.
I asked if they could give me an example, and I was told that the complaint stated that I was singing lyrics such as “this time the south will rise again man” and “bring dixie back to dixieland”. I told them that I was simply singing along to Mame and that the song and musical doesn’t have any racism in it; in fact, Mame has a Progressive message . I told them I could play the song for them but they told me that wouldn’t be necessary.
I am on the verge of tears DL! The meeting was so humiliating and I can tell everyone in the office is judging me. We are going to have another meeting and I should be able to share my side of the story more. What do I do, DL? HELP!

While my husband was dying in the ICU I would bring the iPad to play music for him. One day two black nurses came in and asked me to step out in the hall while they did some tests on him. A minute after I step into the hall I hear the opening notes to "The Ballad of Booth " from Assassins. The nurses were in his room for the entire song, and heard the lyric. I thought about apologizing but they didn't mention it so neither did I.

The biggest problem is the listening to music at work, period. You're there to work. So many of the secretaries and clerks in my place have those Goddamned ear buds in. They can't hear you when you're speaking to them, they sing out loud off key, hum, and fucking whistle to no end. The phones are ringing off the hook while they're in the fifth chorus of Lizzo. It's aggravated assault to every co-worker, not to mention the height of trash and classlessness. An unacceptable practice at work that strangely goes unaddressed and unpunished!
OP, if you're making six figures, you can afford to focus on what they're paying you to do and not have to amuse yourself with any type of music or diversion. I sympathize OP. I work for a chain restaurant, very high up, making a salary in the low five figures. I too thought I got along with my colleagues ok until the boss called me in (we don't have an HR department) and said there have been several complaints about me. The first complaint was that I used incorrect pronouns about an employee at work and it got back to her. I have no idea what this even means, or what a pronoun is. I told my boss it was an innocent mistake but everyone is treating me like I'm kryptonite now. I'm devastated.
The other complaint was that I've been seen jerking off into the ranch dressing bucket in the refrigerator, but my boss thought that one was ridiculously petty and we had a good laugh over how it probably improved the taste.
