How Long Until This Disney girl Olivia Rodrigo Goes Away?

The one song I've heard from her is about her getting her driver's license, and her off-key screaming makes my ears bleed. She seems too bland and uninteresting to last very long. She'll have to do the Christina/Miley "Out-of-control", Britney meltdown, or drug-addict Demi stunts to survive, but it will be really corny by then.

I fucking HATE THAT STUPID SONG!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 2June 25, 2021 8:08 PM

I don't know. Driver's license is one of the few huge hits in recent years i can understand why is so successful and she has a very pleasant voice (at least the recorded voice).

In the past teen singers dissapered pretty fast but now they are way more persistent and most of them are smart enough to keep acting

by Anonymousreply 3June 25, 2021 8:08 PM

She almost killed newly LGBTQ+ twink Joshua Bassett.

Who is this girl? I'm not even old. I'm 28 and I've never heard of her.

by Anonymousreply 5June 26, 2021 2:04 AM

She’s the one singing a song about stalkerish behavior that if she was a man people would be trying to cancel her for.

by Anonymousreply 6June 26, 2021 2:13 AM

She wrote a whole album of Taylor type bitter songs about a dude who doesnt love her back coz he’s gay. Sorry girlfriend, I know youre young and you seem sweet, but maybe your gaydar will get better with age. I have to give her props for igniting the imagination of the tiktok generation and she appears to be a decent enough singer.

by Anonymousreply 7June 26, 2021 2:23 AM

She’s young, an immediate global superstar, and will sweep next year’s Grammys.

Accordingly, she’s not relevant here.

by Anonymousreply 8June 26, 2021 2:25 AM

R8 Pop music isn't universal like it used to be in the time of MJ, Madonna, Britney, Mariah, etc. You really don't know about any pop singer unless you actively follow them. This Olivia girl, I've really never heard of until this thread popped up. I know Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Harry Styles because they're in mainstream media. Yet I've yet to see an ad, article or video of this chick. Also, Disney pop stars aren't as mainstream, I was young when Hilary Duff and Jesse McCartney were popular Disney stars but virtually no adult knew or cared about them. This is just a repeat of that just with my generation.

by Anonymousreply 9June 26, 2021 2:31 AM

Her first song topped charts in over 25 countries - a massive global hit.

The failure of DLers to know of her says more about DL than Rodrigo.

Here we are talking about her.

by Anonymousreply 10June 26, 2021 2:38 AM

[quote] The failure of DLers to know of her says more about DL than Rodrigo.

Why? Is every gay person supposed to love every fucking female artist? Maybe her music just doesn't appeal to us gays?

by Anonymousreply 11June 26, 2021 2:40 AM

Bro dude studlet, with the wankable name of Ethan Wacker is supposedly one of the other former boyfriends that many are salivating in hopes he’ll come out too.

Agreed, r11. We gays are niche and well past the days when we might be a proving ground for a new pop artist.

by Anonymousreply 13June 26, 2021 2:42 AM

I just listened to the Driver's License and it was meh. Forgettable. Nothing remarkable. I felt like I've already heard a voice and singing technique like this before. Like those "singers" that Disney spits out every decade or so. Mariah in her debut single "Vision of Love" was singing at the level of legend compared to these pop bitches of today.

by Anonymousreply 14June 26, 2021 2:57 AM

I listened to the song and she sounds annoying and whiny. Her voice is mediocre and she has no range. Why is she famous and why does Disney keep pushing the worst singers in the world? Ironic that Nickelodeon had Ariana Grande and she's a real singer and outsings every chick Disney pushed.

Jazmine Sullivan and JoJo are other real singers who released albums recently. Please support them.

by Anonymousreply 15June 26, 2021 3:07 AM

I don't mind good 4 u. But to me, she's just a pastiche of Taylor and Alanis Morrissette from the Jagged Little Pill era.

But I was surprised to learn she's had a few #1 songs already.

by Anonymousreply 16June 26, 2021 3:18 AM

R16 I don't hear either Taylor or Alanis in that song at all. OK maybe Taylor because they both have mediocre voices and both basic white girls. But Alanis is actually interesting and creative.

by Anonymousreply 17June 26, 2021 3:20 AM

R6 Let's be serious, Driver's license has nothing to do with stalker, it's about a girl who remembers the love she lost and that's all

by Anonymousreply 18June 26, 2021 10:51 AM

R13 Sorry but you are talking about older gays, young gays care about their own singers so probably she is popular among them

by Anonymousreply 19June 26, 2021 10:53 AM

R12 Isn't that guy an unltraconservative?

By the way he is not even handsome

by Anonymousreply 20June 26, 2021 10:54 AM

“ Isn't that guy an unltraconservative?”

Who cares

by Anonymousreply 21June 26, 2021 2:41 PM

Never heard of her but it would be nice to see one young teen celeb not go totally off the rails.

by Anonymousreply 22June 26, 2021 3:19 PM

She's a teen pop star and given I didn't hear about her until this thread. So, I can see that she isn't being pushed like Billie Eilish or Camila Cabello onto mainstream audiences. Maybe she is low-key and not an attention whore, so that's why. I'm not that impressed by her at all and her singing leaves much to be desired but I hope she has a good head on her shoulders. She's young, so she can improve if she is ambitious enough.

Also being popular on Spotify and YouTube is nowhere close to the same as being huge on Top 40 Radio, always on TV and on the cover of all of the magazines. There is no more superstars that are universally known anymore because the music industry is more fragmented and artists have to appeal to a more niche audience. I would say Gaga, Adele, Taylor Swift and Rihanna were probably the last of that superstar breed. So of course, people on DL may not have heard of her unless we are following her and watching her Disney show.

by Anonymousreply 23June 26, 2021 3:41 PM

R21 So people care about Nassib being a republican but not about a talentless and not even hot Disney star being and ultra?

by Anonymousreply 24June 26, 2021 5:34 PM

R23 Driver's license was number one on radio for several weeks (and she has at least two more top 10's).

And Driver's license was massive all over europe, it was way bigger than anything Bille Eilish released till now

by Anonymousreply 25June 26, 2021 5:36 PM

R25 So? How does that invalidate what I said? Nobody really listens to top 40 radio. It's all about playlists. People have more options when it comes to music. There are algorithms too that customize search results. She's popular with teens but older people don't care about her.

by Anonymousreply 26June 26, 2021 6:34 PM

R26 The song was a hit on radio, sold a lot on itunes and was an smash hit on streaming. It was huge and it doesn't matter if you listened or not

by Anonymousreply 28June 26, 2021 6:39 PM

Drivers License is so lame. It sounds like a whiny teenage girl’s diary entry about some boy who dumped her. Who cares?

But honestly, as long as it keeps that Eilish skank off the charts I can deal with it.

by Anonymousreply 29June 26, 2021 6:47 PM

R29 The answer is obvious, it cared her target audience which was the one that make the song such huge hit.

Anyway, i don't get that vibe at all. It sounds like a first love dissapointement which is a classic on pop songs, the theme is universal

by Anonymousreply 30June 26, 2021 6:50 PM

She’s not going anywhere. You all sound old and bitter, her album is great and she seems to have a good head on her shoulders. God, why so much vitriol for a young woman you don’t know who hasn’t done anything to offend? Really sad lives you must lead.

by Anonymousreply 31June 26, 2021 6:52 PM

You old gays mustn’t have dated in high school. Literally every old ass woman has. Wen saying how relatable her songs are and how the capture a moment in life so perfectly.

by Anonymousreply 32June 26, 2021 6:55 PM

Maybe a long time. The New Yorker's music critic recently did an article about her album. I remember being surprised many years ago when the New Yorker took Taylor Swift seriously.

by Anonymousreply 33June 26, 2021 7:19 PM

R28 I didn't say it wasn't a hit. I said she isn't known outside of her demographic and most of DL isn't her demographic. Please get that through your thick skull. Nobody hates her. A lot of us are just not impressed with her. Why is that so offensive?

by Anonymousreply 34June 26, 2021 7:28 PM

R34 But that's pretty normal nowadays.

Singers like Madonna who everybody knew even if some didn't like her are very uncomnmon nowadays

You said that she was not pushed into mainstream audiences when she clearly is. Her song was an inmediate number one in the USA and it was released inmediately on the rest of the world

Eilish or Cabello (Cabello is not even popular anymore) appeal was to young people too

Eilish has some good songs (Lovely) that may appeal beyond her young fanbase but that's all.

by Anonymousreply 35June 26, 2021 7:34 PM

Loathe her. She spent an entire album whining about her gay ex-boyfriend. She’s stupid and a frau in training and her 30 something male co-writer probably wrote most of her tolerable lyrics.

Go away.

by Anonymousreply 36June 26, 2021 7:37 PM

NYT also did an ultra serious video on the creation of her masterpiece that seems ripe for parody.

Can't you buy streaming numbers, YouTube views and social media followers? Payola still exists in different forms.

by Anonymousreply 39June 26, 2021 8:53 PM

This whole thread is typing in from 1999.

by Anonymousreply 40June 26, 2021 9:07 PM

That is because Disney is still acting like it is 1999. They are hopelessly old media in a new media world and their attempts to pander to LGB people with that pinkwashing shit is just too little, too late.

by Anonymousreply 41June 26, 2021 9:26 PM

"Um like why does this female celebrity exist? Here are all the reasons. It's basically a string of insults. Oh and here are some other female celebrities I've made fun of. Can they like all just evaporate?"

[quote]She’s stupid and a frau in training and her 30 something male co-writer probably wrote most of her tolerable lyrics.

This.

by Anonymousreply 43June 26, 2021 9:51 PM

What is it going to take to make good music popular again?

by Anonymousreply 44June 26, 2021 9:56 PM

R44 The end of Britney Spears conservatorship.

by Anonymousreply 45June 26, 2021 10:03 PM

Good music will come back to mainstream if we actually buy the albums of artists. Many talented musicians aren't mainstream and have to do things DIY. The music industry doesn't invest anymore in finding talent and taking risks.

by Anonymousreply 46June 26, 2021 11:22 PM

There are smart young female singers... Lorde is one. Taylor Swift even had skills. Fiona Apple was brilliant and started very young.

Olivia Rodrigo is a bratty child actor who whines thru song and song about her ex boyfriend who turned out to be gay. She’s no artist. She’s also severely anorexic. And here’s a fun twist - apparently she stole most of her photo ideas and the video concept for “good 4 u” from another less popular indie girl. The young people have been posting about it on tik tok and rodrigo’s people keep getting the tik tok’s deleted. I saw a thread about it on twitter. So she’s also incapable of original ideas.

by Anonymousreply 47June 26, 2021 11:32 PM

Here is the tweet with examples of her copying that other singer...

R50 Newsflash: musical taste is subjective and there's plenty of people who didn't like manufactured pop music even when they were young.

by Anonymousreply 51June 27, 2021 1:39 AM

R50 I’m not old. I just can’t stand her. Her fan base largely seems to be girls under 24.

I tried listening to her album but the sole focus on trashing the gay ex-boyfriend was too insufferable. Maybe if he was some straight frat boy I would feel slightly differently but hearing her go on and on and on about her teenage boyfriend who came out after they broke up just seems so FRAU JR. to me.

by Anonymousreply 52June 27, 2021 1:44 AM

All music is manufactured!

by Anonymousreply 53June 27, 2021 1:45 AM

The only song i like is Deja Vu. She's new the Taylor Swift by using a bad breakup for pr and milking it for all it's worth. Does look like she has an eating disorder though 😬

by Anonymousreply 54June 27, 2021 3:46 PM

Taylor Swift’s schtick is getting old and pathetic now that she’s in her 30s, so it’s clear this girl is taking up that mantle. She’s also prime beard/PR relationship material. But she does look very anorexic, so I predict drug problems and rehab in her future.

by Anonymousreply 55June 27, 2021 6:10 PM

It was pathetic as soon as Helen Reddy first recorded "I Am Woman," R55.

by Anonymousreply 56June 27, 2021 6:21 PM

If this was a white girl with a song about her drivers license, the media wouldn’t be giving a fuck about her.

by Anonymousreply 57June 27, 2021 11:28 PM

I’m surprised they o hear that she looks anorexic. She sings fat…wailing about her teenage boyfriend who ghosted her and now she can’t drive to his house.

by Anonymousreply 58June 27, 2021 11:30 PM

Why are they all Latino? Is that the universally accepted ethnicity?

The last one I remember that was Caucasian was Miley Cyrus. Has there ever been a black one? (I’ll freely admit I don’t follow this closely.)

by Anonymousreply 59June 27, 2021 11:32 PM

Zendaya is “black” and from Disney.

Keke Palmer too.

by Anonymousreply 70June 28, 2021 1:18 AM

Yes, she is not Hispanic. Her dad is white and mother is Filipina

by Anonymousreply 71June 28, 2021 1:32 AM

In all the pictures of her I’ve seen, she always has her mouth hanging open. I wonder if her teeth are too big for her to properly close it- like Kristen Stewart or Princess Beatrice.

by Anonymousreply 72June 28, 2021 1:36 AM

Exactly R70. I was born in 1990 and actually grew up watching Brady Bunch reruns and all sorts of '70s stuff that my parents grew up on, but that didn't make me a '70s kid. To say so is absurd. I was still very much a child of the '90s.

by Anonymousreply 76October 29, 2021 4:06 AM

She will be like Jewel or Lorde. Huge for five minutes and then playing festival acts, if she can even perform live. She's Billy Eilish two years ago. That fug can't even get a real hit now. Except a hit with the Ugly stick.

by Anonymousreply 77October 29, 2021 4:23 AM
