I was just thinking about Hogan's Heroes and starting a thread about it and here Robert Clary just died. RIP, I love that show!

That’s a shame, he was the last cast member left, I believe. HH was a favorite when I was a kid, and I’m still fond of it as an adult. I watch it most weeknights on MeTV, it’s still very funny.

He was going to reprise his role of Pierre on Y&R for the 50th anniversary, which ruins the sl of Pierre faking his death and coming back to reveal he was Sharon's long lost father.

He wasn't gay, he was married to one of Eddie Cantor's five daughters. And his granddaughter confirmed his death.

Everybody remembers Hogan's Heroes, but he was also in New Faces of 1954 with Eartha Kitt and Alice Ghostley.

The movie, called simply "New Faces" (poster shown at R9), was based on the Broadway show "New Faces of 1952," which has a lot of wonderful numbers. Robert Clary did an impersonation of Johnnie Ray called "It's Raining Memories." He also did this song with Eartha.

Clary was a Holocaust survivor who went on to co-star in a sitcom about Nazis.

My mother loved that show.

Werner Klemperer was German and his father was Jewish. They immigrated here in 1933.

Rest in war.
That's what I want to see some time.

He was the last of the main cast. Nita Talbot (Marya, the Russian spy) is still alive too.

96 was a good run. He outlived Bob Crane by 44 years.

We can probably assume that Bob Crane would have had a longer life if he hadn't gotten himself inconveniently murdered.

R20. I forgot Nita was still around. She was absolutely brilliant, I think she won an Emmy for her portrayal of Marya.

I've always loved Nita Talbot, in whatever show she shows up in.

He did a "Fantasy Island" with Bert Convy, but no "Love Boat" or "Murder She Wrote."

He was the youngest of 14 children and all his family including himself at age 16 ended up in Auschwitz and he was the only one to survive.

R27. Unimaginable what he survived. May he rest in peace.

He outlived Bob Crane by 44 years. But never fucked indiscriminately and video taped most of it. Different strokes for different folks.

Bob Crane, now there is a story worth telling.

Good Lord R27 I had no idea, how horrendous. I hope there’s an afterlife just so he can see his family again, how do you even survive something like that.

R33
Robert Clary wasn't alone in that horrible fate. Scores if not hundreds of persons were only or one of few left surviving members of a r family, after Nazis got through with them.

I know he was married, etc. -But I had always heard he was gay. A friend who used to live in WeHo told me about Clary being arrested for lewd conduct with another man in a public bathroom. But I'll defer to the experts here on DL. If that actually happened, someone here will surely know about it. Either way, he was a talented man who survived one of the worst times in human history.

Will Roddy McDowell's memoirs reveal the truth?

I heard the same thing years ago but have nothing specific to back it up.
[quote]Will Roddy McDowall's memoirs reveal the truth?
Maybe, if you don't mind waiting another 120 years for them to be released.

. . .after the Nazis AND their European assistants/enablers got through with the Jews.

R35 Clary's arrest was a news item in the National Enquirer. Photo of the clip attached. In this case, it was taken from police-court records. Given the description of the location, I can tell it was the same infamous restroom located in Will Rogers Park in Beverly Hills where George would eventually get arrested. This was a pretty well-known place for such activity.
