I would do this on IMDb in the old days but of course ....
I saw this movie some years ago and it went into my brain like a fever dream — I remember parts of it but not the whole thing.
It’s either a Spanish or Latin American movie, possibly from the 80s.
It starts with a child, I think, going missing in a rain storm at night, with the extended family and friends searching for the child near a swamp or lake using flashlights. They eventually find the child. The scene is surreal and beautiful.
Eventually there’s a family story but I don’t remember what it is.
I do remember that there’s an interaction between the affluent protagonist family and some very poor people who live in an extremely impoverished area nearby. The wealthy family hire some of the poor people to work for them.
Then at one point the wealthy family have to travel to a big city and leave the house for a while. They depart, but then the father realizes he has to go back to the house to tend to something. He returns unexpectedly to the house only to find that the poor people they had hired are in the midst of stealing something from the house. When he confronts them, they kill him.
Then at the end of the movie there’s an incredibly creepy scene in the darkened hiuse — as the camera pans around the silent, dark kitchen, barely discernible you see the shadow of a devil entering the kitchen.
Yes I’m probably crazy for thinking anyone could identify the movie from this fragmentary description — but ... ?

No — it’s a Spanish or Latin American movie, and AFAIK this is not the plot of Mosquito Coast.
