I am soon to be 50 and work in the design world. I kind of hate shopping for clothes. I want to look pulled together, but also comfortable. I also hate trying to put together an outfit every morning. I don't love the idea of spending a ton of money on clothes anymore. I also want to be semi-stylish. I am thinking that I need a simple but pulled-together look for spring into summer. I have fallen kinda hard for Muji, the Japanese department store. It seems decent and quality and inexpensive. A friend has been preaching about a capsule collection, I guess things you can mix and match. Looking to order some basics tonight. I like this French terrycloth sweatshirt, maybe a white button-down and jeans or linen pants for every day? I'd like a uniform that seems comfortable and not boring. Typically my winter look is a blazer with a turtleneck and jeans. Would you think this is appropriate business casual for a designer? I will spend money on shoes, but I am pretty simple for everything else. If you have any suggestions, let me know.

Doing this can result in a monotonous look but if you fill your wardrobe with pieces that all match each other, you don't have to put much effort into pre-planning outfits.

Maybe try Stitch Fix. It's kind of like having your own personal stylist. They will put together outfits and send to you. You keep what you like, return what you don't. It's not horribly expensive either.

OP, I'm late 50's and also work in the design field. I travel a lot for work and almost never see the same clients or coworkers two days in a row. Ten years ago I moved to a "uniform" - well tailored, high end dark blue blazer, dark jeans (AG), starched white 100% cotton shirt, good loafers. The weight of the blazer material changes per the climate I'm in but almost always is a wool or wool blend. In colder weather I may put a cashmere sweater on under the blazer and add a scarf. Took me awhile to figure out that at my age, no one is looking at my wardrobe. Spend your money on maintaining a great haircut and good frames if you wear glasses.

I've perfected that HETERO slob look. I buy all of my cloths at Costco. My t shirts, underwear and socks I buy on Amazon.

R4 - I have been doing Stitch for nearly a year. For the most part I have been happy with what they sent me. I haven’t gone for the shoes. The only thing I haven’t been too happy about is the “bonus” items. They are hit and miss in sizing and season, but they are “free” and not returnable. I assume they are odds and ends they need to get rid of.

I third Stitch Fix. I thought I was stylish and well dressed for work, then I subscribed to Stitch Fix and got legitimate, out of the blue compliments at work. It was really nice but also made me feel like my own style must’ve sucked and wasn’t nearly as put together as I thought.
I only did it for 6 months and I had plenty of clothes and was running out of room in my closet (and had spent quite a bit). Plus the pandemic started and I reverted to t-shirts and joggers to work from home, so I paused my membership and haven’t restarted. I got a few items I didn’t love and was too lazy to return. And I didn’t like the shoes at all and gave them to a friend. But overall, very good experience.
| by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 31, 2022 6:14 AM |
OH! And I even ordered some additional items that I loved in different colors after I received an order. Most of the brands are things I’d never heard of, but when I looked them up online, the Stitch Fix prices were bargains compared to buying directly from the brands’ websites.

IMO, that "French terrycloth" sweatshirt is still ... a sweatshirt. Looks like loungewear, not workwear. *At least* get a V-neck if you're going to wear something loose like that.
What is a "button-down"? Are you planning to wear a white, collared shirt under that sweatshirt or a sweater? I'd say no to that. Looks old-fashioned, IMO. However, a plain dress shirt with jeans would be nice.
No linen pants, please. Why would you want to look so rumpled if it's not necessary. I don't care if it's a natural fiber.
I like blazers and dark jeans. Please, no turtleneck. It looks stuck in the past.
I'm not familiar with Muji, but if it's anything like Uniqlo, I'd stay away.
OP, you're 50. Now is not the time in your life to start going cheap on clothing.
Good luck.

[quote]Theory - you cannot go wrong..
I love Theory, but sooooo expensive for most guys. A leather jacket is 1,000. Been thinking about getting one, but cant tell how it will fit since the male models on most of these fashion sights look like emaciated little boys where the cloths just hang like drapes even thought they are probably slim fit's to begin with.
As you get older, I think a more minimal look, higher quality with mix and match looks better on men. You can be cool without looking like an old man that way.
| by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 31, 2022 7:55 AM |
Most advice for men over 50 is don't be fat, move to the arctic north were every outfit involves layers and layers of cloths plus a jacket. And make sure you work in a conservative industry were suits and dress jackets are required. Such bullshit from most of these fashion advisor. It never occurs them that half the world live in constantly warm climate like 80-90 degrees or in creative fields where a suite or even a jacket is considered ridiculous where everyone else runs around in jeans and a t-shirt.
If you are still thin, try some of these looks. They are casual which I like.
Offsite Link| by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 31, 2022 8:10 AM |
Some basic fashion tips if you are in a creative industry, don't dress too formal, a jack is really pushing it. Turtle neck? Are you kidding me?
Go for dark color jeans or chinos. Go for the ones that look fresh or new, skip anything that has a distressed or aged look, they just make you look old and dirty. Instead of dress shoes go for an upgraded tennis shoe made out of leather or suede, not real athletic shoes. Skip tight t-shirts or anything with a logo. Replace them with an a button down that is made to be un-tucked. Or if it's really hot outside, try a real Ralph Lauren Polo shirt that cost around $100, not the cheap Polo brands you find for 30 dollars at Ross. The quality really shows. If it's cold, try a nice suede jacket or clean line minimal leather jacket instead of a sports coat or suit jacket.

Stretchy pants are great- it seems most pants these days have some degree of stretch in them. My wardrobe consists mainly of stuff from Uniqlo.
| by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 31, 2022 8:36 AM |
I wanted Uniqlo to work, but everything is all shiny, and the boxers have exposed elastic on the inside of the waistband and I got a rash from them. You get what you pay for.
| by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 31, 2022 10:54 AM |
Yeah, not a fan of Uniqlo, it's for Asian boys on a budget. Not men, or muscular men and certainly not older men.
| by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 31, 2022 12:20 PM |
I used to like Theory (at least during a 50-70% off sale), but I think the quality has gone down hill. Most of their clothes seem like athleisure now, everything is schlubby and made of some coarse poly blend. Uniqlo has also taken a nose dive; I remember when it first came to NYC in the mid-2000s and the jeans and polo shirts were very well-made and fit properly, now it's basically H&M. COS is like a budget version of a Theory, but their shirts and pants were made for waifs with no muscle tone.

| by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 31, 2022 12:33 PM |
I'm searching for new brands, R39! When it comes to chinos I go with J Crew 770, which are perfect for guys with muscular legs/ass and are frequently on sale. For dress shirts I found this brand called Hugh and Crye just as it seemed to be going out of business; rather than sizing shirts by S, M, L, or collar size, they do it by height and body type, so short/average/tall and skinny/average/athletic/broad. For jeans I like AG Trellis fit and Levi's Made and Crafted 511, but both are expensive when not on sale.

Linen is very impractical--it wrinkles when you look at. Hemp can create a similar hand but it insulates a bit too well for warm weather.
The top OP posted is pretty generic which makes me think something simple like well made preppy gear would work. Polo shirts work in all but the most formal of settings---finding a maker whose fit works for you is the main problem. Most of my casual wardrobe and my travel stuff (lots of stuff that dries over night) from Patagonia or their competitors. Practical, slightly different from the norm, youthful but doesn't make you look like you're a geezer trying to be a kid.

Orvis is also pretty good for older gentlemen. I mostly buy used, and don't know what their new stuff is like. But they have historically made some pretty good quality smart/casual clothing. You do have to pick through some wonky stuff though.

Garanimals was / were actually a good idea. That's basically what a capsule wardrobe is. A small bunch of clothing that you can mix and match.

They always say “suit jacket” for men over 50. I tried - but realized it’s ridiculous. Unless for a business meeting, wearing a suit jacket is a pain in the ass. Too hot half the year. And requires an overcoat or specific type of jacket for winter and shoulder seasons. I’ve stopped listening to style advice. If over 50: Thin, good haircut, glasses - and dark simple clothing. I honestly don’t care what people think anymore - which seems to be a crime according to the “getting older” DL threads.

This is good advice, but I do like wearing jackets.
Staying thin is the hard part. I would add: taking care of your skin, keeping up with your grooming, including feet and hands. If you have an overall clean and well-groomed look, you can just wear your dark, casual clothing and look OK.

I think that anything a designer chooses to wear is stylish because they know what they are doing. It may not be to everyone's taste but a designer has a far better chance of putting the right things together than the average person. Also if you feel good in it isn't that what fashion is? I am kind of surprised that you would question others as to your style. The only thing that I would be questioning is why you would want to wear the same style all the time. You have the perfect opportunity to switch it up instead of being stuck in a rut.

There's some Cunt on Youtube who claims to be a fashion consultant to the stars. I wont mention her name here because I don't want her to rank any higher with clicks but she's always ragging on older guys fashion. It's all about "what woman want to see" woman's idea of how men should dress. She show really exaggerated guys with big pot bellies and double chins and says "men over 40 should not wear leather jackets" Of course most of the 10,000 reposes disagree with her. I swear she's trolling. She never gives good alternatives except wear heavy coats, sweaters, jackets scarves hats and cover up completely. Well that's nice if you live in snow country but not practical in places like Arizona or California or the South. Her husband looks like a 40 year old teen boy who is totally nurtured.

Clothes have gone way up lately too. I went into a Levis store and basic Levies were almost $100! They used to be around $40 before the pandemic. I finally found some at about $60 at Macys, but still, Levis in their own store almost 100 is insane. If they were designer jeans, sure, I get they are a lot more but they basic blue jeans. Everything I look at seems to start at that 100 dollar mark and up. Shirts, pants you name it. Anything of minimal quality. Sure, ZARA and similar have a lot lower prices, but the quality is so cheap, it's really disposable fashion meant for a few months of wear before it falls apart.

My point, R69 was I no longer wish to have to think about an outfit every morning, and I dislike shopping for clothes for the most part. Years ago, I was much more of a clothes horse. I like looking stylish. I bought some vintage Gucci loafers last night and for now, I think the sweatshirts and button downs with jeans will be good. I have a few pairs of Stubbs and Wooten knockoffs that will keep things semi-interesting. R66, I think I have a decent sense of style. Which is why I will always be a turtleneck/blazer/denim sort in the winter. It's comfortable and I think I look good in it. R51, you TOTALLY cracked my ass up and I imagine the pain you must have felt at 5. I like a lot of your other suggestions too, so I will browse some more.

OP I work in design too, I’m interested in fashion but never wear my more ‘fun’ things to work, so I’ve also developed a kind of ‘uniform’ of sorts for work but I think of it as more of an informed sort of uniform. Levi’s jeans, vintage if possible. Always 501s. I wear plain cashmere sweaters or else the kind of ‘cool brand’ sweatshirts (Martine Rose, Aries, Telfar, Pacbet, GMBH etc.) always crewneck. Nike socks (for the athleisure nod) then rotate a few kind of fun belts (margiela, vintage, prada, Y/Project) and a real mix of good shoes and fun trainers (eckhaus latta, Prada, Margiela etc etc). If it sounds like I take it too seriously, I don’t really, it’s just for fun. But it’s nice not to be basic. Oh and a good leather backpack, I have a Guidi one.

This feels like it’s January and we have a group that wants to buy fitness at the gym.
You don’t put a wardrobe together in one season and you never buy this season. Unless you’re getting laid. Or having a need to shop.
Right now, you’re buying wool, corduroy, cashmere, and boots. You should start buying Spring/Summer in September.
Also, you know your body. Look around for your body twin and examine the way clothing moves with that body. Look for mistakes: pants too tight in the ass, pant breaks that look like pants are eating shoes, and Nehru collars that accentuate a turkey waddle. Oh, and never thank the person for serving as you fashion don’t.

What about Wallace and Barnes? Any thoughts ? The design seems age appropriate. I’ve been buying J Crew and Banana Republic on eBay and I’ve gotten some great deals.

Can anyone recommend a chino type pant that sits a little higher (not Clint Eastwood high) for wider hips/waist?
| by Anonymous | reply 94 | April 3, 2022 5:55 AM |
R94, it’s still Polo with the stupid pony on the back pocket flap with average price $150. I’d also look at different Golf lines offered at Nike, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and REI - the cut is for active, older guys who don’t want to look silly.

Travis Matthew (which I think is Mark Wahlbergs line) is like the Lululemon for straight upper middle class+ men. A lot of my friends who are in their late 30's-40's wear their polos and pants as everyday wear. It's basic but it's not bad looking. This is more suggestion for the eldergays who want to look decent, but have no fashion sense or the body to wear other things. I tried to post the link but it won't let me. I had to google "golf line w/ M logo".

Blazers are the best because they give you four extra pockets above the waste.
Untucked shirts look slovenly.
Overweight people should avoid wearing knits.
Clip on suspenders are as acceptable on a man as a clip on tie is.
| by Anonymous | reply 98 | April 3, 2022 6:47 PM |
Chore coats give you that plus hand warmers and a dead rabbit carrier in back.
A dark fitted half-zip in cotton looks good on anyone.
Painter’s cut pants are a medium rise, medium leg-width, lighter-weight alternative to denim or cargo. Painter’s overalls would be something with the right husband and project.

I never cut open the pockets on my blazers. I need to look as slim as possible.

Blazers are old man clothes. Stylish back in the day, like way back in the day. Dead giveaway you are an old fart stuck in the mud with dated fashion advice.

I like Vince for everything - pants, shirts, shoes, leisure. They have great sales on their website and at Nordstroms. I never buy full price unless I really like something. The fit can sometimes be a little off (they run big), but once you know your size, I find that their sizing is pretty consistent across all categories.

Does this guy look old to you, r103?
And knock it off with your ageism.
| by Anonymous | reply 106 | April 4, 2022 7:29 AM |
It's not "ageism R106 when the OP asked about dressing better as an older gay man. Age is a part of that equation. Pointing out some of you giving him really bad advice that will make him look older and out of date is not ageist. That's what he's trying to avoid. Looking out of touch.
| by Anonymous | reply 107 | April 4, 2022 8:07 AM |
As I don't know your budget or body shape, just stick to grey, black and some other color you like for Winter. Whenever you buy something make sure its one of those three colors (in any shade) and you'll look fine. Most people don't really know quality, but stick to natural fabrics as much as possible. They do look better overall, even if they are cheap.
Now when it comes to Summer, stick with tan, white and some other color you like. Repeat as above.

| by Anonymous | reply 112 | April 4, 2022 12:08 PM |
Probably because everyone has been wearing sweatpants for the last few years R112 as most people were pretty much staying home.
"5 pocket pants" - cut like jeans but made out out of non-denim fabric in various colors - have been a Thing in the tech and media worlds for a while now--can be worn with a t-shirt or with a jacket and dress shirt
As seen in link, but pretty much every menswear brand makes a version

[quote] Blazers are old man clothes. Stylish back in the day, like way back in the day. Dead giveaway you are an old fart stuck in the mud with dated fashion advice.
Among the many useful features of a blazer is its ability to conceal belly fat and love handles, which most older men have to some degree. The key to dressing well when you’re older is dressing more conservatively. Slim fit is for the young.
| by Anonymous | reply 115 | April 4, 2022 5:57 PM |
Blazers can also give your shoulders some structure. I've worn suit jackets (separates) for years, for work. I don't have the ideal body, so it's not easy to find a flattering blazer.
My advice: the fit at the shoulders is the most important area of fit.
| by Anonymous | reply 116 | April 4, 2022 6:18 PM |
Find a good tailor. Take everything you get to a tailor so that your shirts look made to measure and same with pants, even denim. Older men can wear anything, but it depends on your body type. OP, what's your body type and then it will be easier to assess.
| by Anonymous | reply 117 | April 5, 2022 2:14 AM |
Blazers are like the mullet of men's fashion. Unless you are going to a wedding, 90% of most professional office jobs guys are wearing jeans and a t-shirt or chino's and a button down casual shirt. Maybe a cool looking casual trucker jacket but blazes reeks of old man style. Like lighting up a cigar in a conference room. It may seem like high class sophistication to you, but to everyone else it has a different connotation. Don't even get me started on neck ties, they are dead, dead, dead.
Before you flame me, I didn't say ALL businesses are like that. Obliviously the very conservative fields hold on the dress traditions longer than the general public, like lawyers, bankers and a few others.

I only know about academia. Some dean types will wear a blazer, usually tieless. The provost and the president will wear a suit and tie, but not always. Everyone else is wearing their PJs.

Brunello Cucinelli make the best blazers by far. Beautifully made and yet casual, very expensive but the best.
The reason people think that blazers are old fashioned is because these days most people dress like tramps. Just walk through any airport or down the high street, you feel overdressed if you are wearing socks and shoes.
| by Anonymous | reply 123 | April 5, 2022 7:21 PM |
R118 Jeans, T-shirts and chinos might be popular, but they are boring. If you are happy dressing down and blending into the background with every other boringly dressed male then fine.
| by Anonymous | reply 124 | April 5, 2022 7:32 PM |
Far more than their hetero peers, gay men who are overweight tend to wear clothing that is far too tight, stuff that is designed for a skinny 25 year old, not a portly 55 year old.
As someone noted above, there is a reason why baggy dress shirts and blazers are a thing among many older executives-they camouflage bulky bodies, or at least tend not to show them off.

Blazers are very hard to pull off (except as part of a suit), but if you can do it (see R122), I say go for it.
But I think a chore coat is the current equivalent.
| by Anonymous | reply 127 | April 5, 2022 11:20 PM |
I used to take my shirts in for tailoring but then I realized it’s cheaper just to wear a tailored blazer instead in order to achieve that sharp, well fitted look. Fitted shirts are too constraining unless they have gussets, which really they shouldn’t. A linen or hopsack blazer is a godsend on a sweaty summer day. Keeps you looking fresh.
| by Anonymous | reply 128 | April 6, 2022 12:16 AM |
You can absolutely pull of a blazer but it depends the setting. A nice fitted blazer that is very slim and structured like Theory or Prada looks great. It is ALL about the body. Amen R125 - this is a major no no - men who wear skin tight clothing without the body. I remember when I was a twink, eldergays wore Abercrombie and it just didn't work.
Also, another thing I would avoid if I was a portly elder gay is the old "man purse worn over the belly up front look". It does not camouflage anything and in fact draw attention to that area. I can understand that being a bit of a security blanket in a way, but it doesn't work unfortauntely.
| by Anonymous | reply 129 | April 6, 2022 2:33 AM |
Blazers only work in cold environments. Try wearing one in an office in the south west for example. Even in California, if you work in any creative environment, most guys are wearing jeans and a button down or even just a t-shirt. That means the temp in the office is usually cranked up more than the old days when everyone wore a jacket and tie. And woman (who are not going through menopause) always seem to complain about it being too cold so they have no objection to warmer office temps.
[quote] "If you are happy dressing down and blending into the background with every other boringly dressed male then fine. "
It's about that. In an office they expect you to be part of a team. As my Boomer boss once said, "there is no " I" in team."

Digging out this thread for hopefully helpful recommendations: Fifty-something here with a belly that develops into 'hard-to-ignore' territory.
For t-shirts I like one of those thousand online brands, True Classic. I do buy into their claim that their t-shirts have the best shape for 'dad-bods'. And they keep their structure. I tried one of their polos, too. But they're really just t-shirts with collar. The shape is fine but the fabric is way too thin for a polo.
Upthread somebody advised to find a body-twin and learn from their looks. Is there a website that could help with that by any chance?

I've adopted various chore coats and wider leg painters pants as my go to. It's the most comfortable I've felt in my clothes in years. Chore coats give me the extra pockets for my glasses. I usually wear Ecco leather tennis shoes, navy or brown...not really tennis shoes. I'm also going for a slightly shorter inseam not necessarily ankle bearing. It's still difficult to find clothes that aren't slim or skinny, so over all of that, but people are still buying it. I'm retired, 60, 5'10" 175, desperately trying to drop the 15 extra covid pounds.

I would notice. Of course being just human, I'd notice first what doesn't work. If the guy wears a super tight t-shirt even though he's 20 lbs overweight, yeah, I notice. I also notice bad grooming like crummy feet in flip-flops.
However, I also notice those (very) few exceptions where a man looks very well put together without being overstyled. I think over-styling is just as disastrous as not caring at all. What probably remains unnoticed is the middle-ground where nothing is wrong, but nothing stands out either.
