Gen Z has canceled the thumbs-up emoji

It’s “passive-aggressive” and “hostile”.

They’re working on getting 9 others canceled and hopefully removed from phones.

Seriously. This is what they’re worried about.

They are also very supportive of gays.

by Anonymousreply 2October 15, 2022 1:02 AM

R2 some are. There is still a lot of homophobia.

by Anonymousreply 3October 15, 2022 1:04 AM

WTF -- they already got the "Ok" sign banned for also being some sort of nationalistic extreme signal. Fuck it - thumbs up!

by Anonymousreply 6October 15, 2022 1:05 AM

How do they feel about 💩 ?

by Anonymousreply 7October 15, 2022 1:07 AM

👍😅🙄❤👌💋🙈💩😷

by Anonymousreply 8October 15, 2022 1:08 AM

Fox News was just going on about this the other day - it must be the outrage du jour for conservatives. I assume they're making it up - I've never heard any Gen Z types complaining about the thumbs up emoji.

by Anonymousreply 9October 15, 2022 1:08 AM

Young Millennial, and I use either the upside-down smiley emoji or the chick coming out of the eggshell when I'm dry texting or want to be pass-agg. In my wintbrain, both mean 'cool, fun, good luck with all that (you just said), I don't really care though'. I don't think I ever use the thumbs-up or down tbh.

by Anonymousreply 13October 15, 2022 1:16 AM

That piece has resulted in a slew of articles from Gen Zees saying "WTF? No we don't think that!" --they use the thumbs up for the same reason everyone else does -- to acknowledge something that does not need a full on answer ("Be there in 5!") or, in a workplace setting, so say "Acknowledging that I got the thing you just Slacked me about, will respond in more detail once I actually get to read it.")

by Anonymousreply 14October 15, 2022 1:19 AM

Tell that to all the GenZ employees at work who respond to every Microsoft Teams message with the "thumbs-up". Evidently, they have no time for full responses because they're so busy multi-tasking. By multi-tasking I don't mean juggling their workload. It takes a lot of effort for chatting, texting, phoning friends and keeping their Instagram updated while they're working.

by Anonymousreply 15October 15, 2022 1:20 AM

The OK sign is a blatant Nazi signal. If not, why are they always flashing it?

by Anonymousreply 16October 15, 2022 1:20 AM

OP is a right-wing troll posting crap from the NY Post

No one canceled anything, the NY Post is just hoping it's elderly readers will rage against Gen Z or "cancel culture"

I guess they succeeded with OP

by Anonymousreply 18October 15, 2022 1:23 AM

Fonzie says 👍 AYYY 👍

by Anonymousreply 19October 15, 2022 1:24 AM

[quote]they already got the "Ok" sign banned for also being some sort of nationalistic extreme signal.

Now, you know damn well that's true. Don't blame them for that. Nice try pretending that isn't a thing, though so you could slide your agenda in here.

[quote]Tell that to all the GenZ employees at work who respond to every Microsoft Teams message with the "thumbs-up".

We had this discussion at work the other day.

In a work context: thumbs up is fine. We're just acknowledging that we saw the message.

In a personal context: It's like responding, "k" instead of "okay" or even "ok." It can be seen as passive aggressive or lazy because people do in fact do it to be passive aggressive or lazy. It has little to do with the thumbs up and more to do with the lack of effort in posting the thumbs up.

by Anonymousreply 20October 15, 2022 1:24 AM

Are the same people who declared that white people shouldn't use yellow emojis?

by Anonymousreply 21October 15, 2022 1:26 AM

[quote] they already got the "Ok" sign banned for also being some sort of nationalistic extreme signal.

The white power hand sign is not the same as OK.

by Anonymousreply 22October 15, 2022 1:28 AM

Within my friend group (mid-late 30s) it's usually a sign that the conversation has reached its natural conclusion ("Just got off the subway!" "Okay, we are at a table to the left when you walk in." "Great. Be there in 5" "Thumbs up") or, that after you'd been texting for a while and have moved into chit-chat, that the thumbs-upper can no longer immediately respond to texts

by Anonymousreply 23October 15, 2022 1:29 AM

Maybe they can replace the offending emoji's with a new "suck my dick" emoji so I can say to them "suck my dick".

by Anonymousreply 25October 15, 2022 1:41 AM

r2 many that claim to be also say gays are nasty bigots for not being interested in the opposite sex if they identify as the same sex.

by Anonymousreply 26October 15, 2022 1:46 AM

I have to admit, I find the thumbs up emoji off putting as well. I am Gen X and there's something impersonal and ambiguous about it that makes it seem dismissive. I was very surprised that I'm not the only one who feels this way.

by Anonymousreply 27October 15, 2022 2:05 AM

I am not offended by any of the emojis but the points made in the article are well-taken: the younglings are referring only to workplace usage and not being taken seriously when receiving an emoji response to a crafted email.

by Anonymousreply 28October 15, 2022 2:33 AM

If anyone is wondering why right wing media keeps churning out these culture war/scapegoat pieces that are filled with lies, it's because simpletons like OP keep lapping them up.

That reddit post is almost a year old and has just a few comments in agreement. And the quotes in the article are conveniently cut off. For example, here's the full comment from the person who called the thumbs up "super rude."

[quote]For younger people (I’m 24 for reference) the thumbs up emoji is used to be really passive aggressive. It’s super rude if someone just sends you a thumbs up. So I also had a weird time adjusting because my workplace is the same. So yeah it’s a generational communication culture difference. Everyone my age in the office doesn’t do it, but the gen X people always do it. Took me a bit to adjust and get out of my head that it means they’re mad at me

IOW, no big deal afterall.

Not to mention that if it were a boomer complaining about emoji-only responses, the Post would turn it into an article about Gen Z being so dumb they don't communicate in words anymore.

So could you wingnuts please take your culture war nonsense back to Brietbart or wherever the stupid congregate now? Thanks in advance.

by Anonymousreply 29October 15, 2022 2:42 AM

What in the ever loving fuck are you trying to tell us, R13? Please, reword, edit, and resubmit your post.

On second thought, don’t bother….

by Anonymousreply 30October 15, 2022 2:55 AM

I wish that they'd soon get around to cancelling their lack of hygiene and aversion to deodorant, too.

by Anonymousreply 31October 15, 2022 3:09 AM

I use the thumbs up emoji, sometimes for dry texting. I don't want to not respond, but I feel like: enough already.

by Anonymousreply 33October 15, 2022 3:37 AM

R2 Correction. They are not supportive of gays anymore. They were, until the Great Tranny Takeover of 2015.

by Anonymousreply 35October 15, 2022 3:40 AM

So what we're saying is, none of us should ever communicate with each other in any way because there's a slight possibility it could be offensive.

by Anonymousreply 36October 15, 2022 3:42 AM

Grow up, R20. Seriously. Good lord.

by Anonymousreply 38October 15, 2022 3:43 AM

"when I'm dry texting or want to be pass-agg. In my wintbrain"

You are a fucking retard. Thumbs up! R13

by Anonymousreply 39October 15, 2022 3:45 AM

Then I will be making the thumbs-up icon my profile picture on all social media and hookup apps.

by Anonymousreply 40October 15, 2022 3:47 AM

R26, your fellow conservatives are still against gay marriage in 2022. Ask Glenn Youngkin or Ron Johnson

by Anonymousreply 41October 15, 2022 3:48 AM

R36 believes everything he reads in the New York Post. A handful of people complaining about something doesn't mean it's "canceled"

by Anonymousreply 42October 15, 2022 3:49 AM

R42 Bless your heart, retard. 👍

by Anonymousreply 43October 15, 2022 3:51 AM

Their widdle feels are hurt? Each generation seems to get more fragile.

by Anonymousreply 44October 15, 2022 3:58 AM

This is what happens when too many decades pass without a major catastrophe. The generations of our ancestors who had to deal with war, genocide, communism, etc,. I can guarantee you they never worried about things as silly as this. You all better pray for WWIII, otherwise it will be another 100 years of “whaaaa, my pronoun wasn’t respected.”

by Anonymousreply 45October 15, 2022 3:58 AM

Covid in 2020 was not a catastrophe? It surely affected more Americans more directly than any other event apart from WWII or the aftermath of 9/11.

by Anonymousreply 46October 15, 2022 10:05 AM

Fuck Rupert Murdoch's NYPost!

by Anonymousreply 47October 15, 2022 10:09 AM

So where does it say anyone is working on canceling emojis or getting them removed from phones, OP? The article references a survey of 10 emojis that make a user look old and a Reddit thread. Where’s the source for this effort to ban the 10 emojis?

by Anonymousreply 48October 15, 2022 2:18 PM

How tedious and exhausting.

[quote]poster confessed to being “not adult enough to be comfortable with the thumbs-up emoji reaction,”

Pretty much sums it up. Not adult enough, mature enough, resiliant, or adaptable.

by Anonymousreply 49October 15, 2022 2:38 PM

I prefer 👍👍 because it looks casually enthusiastic.

by Anonymousreply 50October 15, 2022 4:44 PM

I've heard about this and if they want to come after Millennials they better watch out. We've already had to deal with two older generations and we're not in the mood to play games with them

by Anonymousreply 51October 16, 2022 8:16 AM

[quote]Fox News was just going on about this the other day - it must be the outrage du jour for conservatives. I assume they're making it up - I've never heard any Gen Z types complaining about the thumbs up emoji.

Well, of course Fox News is just making-up fake outrage shit!!! "War on Christmas", anyone?

Mrs Astor always insists on a note on marbled paper, delivered by her most senior servant. I believe anything less than that is the utmost rudeness.

Sometimes one does have to withstand a junior footman, darling, and Caroline knows that VERY well.

by Anonymousreply 58October 17, 2022 6:26 AM

I hate both Gen Z and the thumbs up emoji

by Anonymousreply 59October 17, 2022 6:39 AM

Okay, so here's ther NY POST:

Some random Reddit users, at least one whose profile is deleted, plus a random lifestyle blogger = an entire generation.

People use this emoji less frequently = an entire generation has cancelled this emoji.

Please become media literate.

by Anonymousreply 60October 17, 2022 6:47 AM

Gen-Z are really proving themselves to be fucking morons.

by Anonymousreply 61October 17, 2022 1:40 PM

I'm not Gen Z, but a Karen used that emoji in a reply to me on Reddit last week and it pissed me off to no end. So maybe there is something to this passive aggressive thing. (I know she was a Karen because she was in my country's subreddit bitching about a traffic light she dislikes, addressing her post to the fucking mayor of our city.)

by Anonymousreply 62October 17, 2022 3:10 PM

Ah, the usual suspects throwing hissy fits and screaming fake news. How's the weather in Beijing, boys?

by Anonymousreply 63October 17, 2022 3:18 PM

Gosh, R62, and you sound so sane and amiable!

I assume those who are calling it passive-aggressive are not receiving the emoji in reply to texts like "See you there at 1 pm", where it appears entirely appropriate as a way to quickly acknowledge that the message has been received and thus the arrangement is Go.

Can someone who has been outraged by the emoji please give an example of what it was put up in reply to that made it appear passive aggressive?

by Anonymousreply 64October 17, 2022 3:20 PM

American children are hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 65October 17, 2022 3:21 PM

They feel attacked when it's used in the workplace ?

GEN Z FUCKING WORKS ?!

by Anonymousreply 66October 17, 2022 3:23 PM

So people are still pretending this is a serious article and not some trumped up right wing bullshit?

by Anonymousreply 67October 17, 2022 3:26 PM

Careful, or R63 will call you out as a Chinese agent 👍

by Anonymousreply 68October 17, 2022 3:33 PM

Sure, only a Chinese agent would notice the NYPost desperately scouring 10 month old reddit threads for content.

by Anonymousreply 69October 17, 2022 3:36 PM

One thing I've noticed is how dark and depressing the youthquake has become under Gen Z's watch.

by Anonymousreply 70November 2, 2022 3:34 PM

But I’ll bet they spell resilient correctly.

by Anonymousreply 73November 2, 2022 4:42 PM

So outright speaking to another person you don't know is aggressive.

Throwing something away or being dismissive is a microagression.

Using a thumbs up is not engaging enough to NOT be passive aggressive.

The OK emoji is linked to Satanism as it has a reference to three sixes.

I'm genuinely curious how American youth would react to this German designed and installed ride.
