by Anonymousreply 4January 23, 2024 9:42 AM

He didn't "school" him. If you watch the video of the interview, at the start Bill says he thinks Gavin should run for President.

I think so, too.

by Anonymousreply 5January 23, 2024 9:51 AM

An actual Bill Maher quote: ""I feel like the last couple of years, you've purposely picked this fight with the red states."

What the fuck is he even talking about?

by Anonymousreply 6January 23, 2024 9:51 AM

R6, Gavin has gone after DeSantis. Pointedly. The two of them even had a weird debate a while back and Gavin wiped the floor with Ronnie/

(Maher was complimenting him btw. He likes Gavin and thinks he should be the one running for president.)

by Anonymousreply 7January 23, 2024 9:57 AM

Bill has been turning into a real Repug the last few years but still pretends to be a progressive / independent or whatever the fuck he can play both sides game of.

by Anonymousreply 8January 23, 2024 9:57 AM

R8, yeah, that's the sense that I've got from him recently.

I liked him back in the 2000s.

I think he's a fucking Republican apologist prick now.

by Anonymousreply 9January 23, 2024 9:59 AM

When did it become wrong to acknowledge two sides to an issue? Do people really believe that it’s wrong to acknowledge a different viewpoint and the reasoning behind it, or is it just a tactic? In addition to being divisive, it seems like a shitty tactic. Acknowledging another person’s viewpoint is how you WIN an argument.

I’m not talking about Bill Maher. I’m nit familiar with him. I’m just asking when throwing ā€œBOTH SIDES!ā€ at someone became a damning pejorative. It seems like the height of stupidity to me, but maybe I’m missing some nuance.

by Anonymousreply 10January 23, 2024 12:25 PM

It is stupid and it’s keeping us stuck.

by Anonymousreply 11January 23, 2024 12:32 PM

@r10, "When did it become wrong to acknowledge two sides to an issue? "

When one side decided to sell it's soul to the devil. Debate and compromise turned into a war for survival

Dec 7 2024 The DL

ā€œWe should have had newsom on the ticket….things might have turned out differentā€

The Dems are so confident they don’t even run their best people.

by Anonymousreply 13January 23, 2024 1:01 PM

^ The best person for the job is already in the White House, Miss Michigan 😠

by Anonymousreply 14January 23, 2024 1:06 PM

R12, that just makes me think you haven’t bothered to consider their perspective. I’m NOT saying the perspective you disagree with is correct. Let’s assume it’s incorrect. But they probably have rational, non-evil reasons for holding it.

Not always. Some people believe terrible things. Sometimes a lot of people believe terrible things. And sometimes a huge percentage of people DO bad things. But when you are taking about a significant percentage of people, they usually have a reason that is rational. That doesn’t mean other considerations don’t make that rational reason based on limited information incorrect or ethically wrong.

I support abortion 100%. No restrictions? Good. You want my tax dollars to pay for it? Fine. It’s going to cost extra for the 8.5 month abortions? Fine. But I don’t think someone who argues that if it’s wrong to kill a newborn, then it’s wrong to abort a fetus is irrational. I have no sympathy for anyone who tries to blow up an abortion clinic or intimidate a woman seeking medical care. But I respect their belief that abortion is wrong and I understand that they think they are doing the right thing. If you think you are doing the right thing, you probably aren’t evil. It’s more likely your thinking is a little twisted. But you might be evil. Not everything can be excused. If you blow up an abortion clinic during business hours you are evil. Hitler was evil. A lot of Germans did the wrong thing. A smaller subset were evil. A pretty big subset, according to my late father whose unit liberated a concentration camp. And it want even one of the worst ones. It was the denial of the locals that got to him.

I think a lot of people look at anti-abortionists as evil because they want to control a woman’s body. But the core argument is that the fetus is a person, too. And making one person bear a child is a lesser harm that killing another person. You can’t win someone over if you ignore that. And you CAN win people over who believe that because a lot are willing to draw the line at 12 weeks or whatever, even though the logic of that isn’t as clean.

Now, do the politicians who are against abortion sincerely believe it’s murder? No. Most are hypocritical assholes who know they can get an illegal abortions for their own daughters and mistresses. They are just lying to get elected.

I think the right argument is to point this out. To wonder aloud why so few conservative politicians’ daughters get in trouble. To compile real statistics on late term abortions to demonstrate that people aren’t getting abortions because a baby has a club foot. To point out that a woman carrying a heathy seven month fetus could wait another two months and then get a five figure check to cover ā€œexpensesā€ in an adoption proceeding.

But to just have the opinion that someone who doesn’t want other people to have abortions is evil? I don’t think that is rational or productive.

by Anonymousreply 15January 23, 2024 1:36 PM

Trump is NOT going to make abortion a major issue in 2024. He will do everything he can and the gop will do everything they can to not make abortion an issue. Wink wink wink to those in the know.

They will quietly wink then say——it’s a states issue let the states decide.

I didn't understand OP's "Gavin Newsom kicks Bill Maher's butt" when Maher has wanted him to run for president for some time.

by Anonymousreply 19January 23, 2024 1:52 PM

Neither the OP nor the reporter got it right; Maher is a Newsom fan. The reporter made much of Maher calling Newsom " kinda mean," but neglected to add," And we need that," which changes the entire premise. I have been begging the Dems to get tough and Newsom has done that. Now, if the rest of the Dems would get off their lazy butts and fight, people might actually listen. But, as long as it's Trump and his sycophants 24/7, the Dems will be too late in articulating a message.

by Anonymousreply 20January 23, 2024 2:03 PM

Many people just want mutual dick-sucking when they watch political interviews, not an actual discussion.

by Anonymousreply 21January 23, 2024 2:11 PM

The American people in general and measured in surveys do not want to see Trump or Biden on the tickets. Newsom has his work cut out for him getting Dems excited about Joe. Getting Dems excited about Trump is more doable

And I say this believing that biden has been a great potus. But excitement for Biden Harris? That was the news from 4 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 22January 23, 2024 2:14 PM

@r15, One more time, because I think you're a bit slow, there are no "both sides" when it comes to personal, civil and equal rights and that includes, but not limited to...

The rights of a woman to choose

LBGT rights

Rights of POC

The rights of immigrants, legal or not, to be treated humanely

The right for all Americans to have free/affordable health care

The right for children to have a proper education that will keep them competitive with other free countries

The continued preservation of Social Security and anti-child labor laws

The right to clean air and water for future generations

And most of all the freedom FROM religion

There are no "both sides" to these issues

by Anonymousreply 23January 23, 2024 2:16 PM

R23

I so agree

And when it rains it will always rain after sundown. And there will be world peace. And hopefully lower taxes. And everyone will be able to have their own home they can buy at a great price. The future is going to be really great.

Dems and GOP working together in a stable democracy to make things better is right around the corner

by Anonymousreply 24January 23, 2024 2:27 PM

^ Because half the voters are stupid, hence the need for a good education, get it?

by Anonymousreply 25January 23, 2024 2:45 PM

R25

One half of the voters do think the other half is stupid. A threat to the country. And the great thing is no matter which side you on on the problem is totally the other morons.

But liberals claiming all we need is better education makes them just as smart as their opposition.

by Anonymousreply 26January 23, 2024 4:17 PM

R5 Maher goes on to say ā€œDam you’re goodā€ after a certain response. And he is good. I don’t think he will play well in flyover. They don’t like pretty white people who talk that liberal talk real well and articulate but if he can get traditional coalitions to come out in good force. He is so fkin charismatic and fine.

by Anonymousreply 28January 23, 2024 6:20 PM

R10 Some issues really don't have "both sides" or where both sides have merit.

And also, there's rarely utterly two sides to an issue.....it's more like a cloud, or a continuum. Unfortunately, media and harsh partisan politics reduces it to two sides, and people get militant about it as if they're fighting over a football team. Most issues are way more nuanced than that, though.

Gavin was dismissed for years as a pretty boy with no substance, but he's actually a policy wonk who can cite numbers and stats for days. I like him but I don't know if Dee Plorable and friends would ever warm to him.

by Anonymousreply 37January 23, 2024 8:44 PM

The objection to "both sides" isn't that some issues don't really have two sides. The objection is to false equivalence: the obsessive need for the Washington press corps especially to find a crazy Democrat, any crazy Democrat, anybody in any place or on any platform, hell, just any leftist, to match the crazy bullshit constantly streaming from Trump, his cult members, Republicans in Congress and Republicans in state government. The traditional ideal in journalism was that everybody must be equally at fault and you are simply not allowed to say the Republican Party seems to be having a crazy ass meltdown, even though it completely and obviously is under the cultish leadership of Trump. You are only allowed to say that "Congress" is being crazy or "Washington" is gridlocked or some shit like that.

THAT is the objection to the phrase.

by Anonymousreply 38January 23, 2024 8:58 PM

^ Yeah, it's pretty tough when all the crazies are on the same team

Great, here's what you are missing in all that, including what your father was trying to tell you. There really was one side that was infinitely worse than the other side and all other sides. Matching stories about Nazis wanting to kill every Jew in the country with stories about Social Democrats wanting to soak the rich with taxes would be a "both sides are being kind of extreme" story that the media lives for. That is the problem. Pretending that everyone is basically equally at fault in all situations and nobody is allowed to look at one party and say: There are some evil fucks with incredibly fucked up ideas. That is what is going on with the obsessive "Both sides" school of journalism.

by Anonymousreply 42January 23, 2024 9:19 PM

R42

Nazis are better compared to Bolshevik’s rather than some party that wants to tax the rich. Far left and far right govts both killing millions and millions of people.. both beyond brutal and inhumane. Both with followers who would kill and die.

by Anonymousreply 43January 23, 2024 9:27 PM

Well, at least we know where you are coming from r43, and yes, you should be a proud member of the Trump Cult. They are perfect for you.

by Anonymousreply 44January 23, 2024 9:28 PM

You must be young. Joe Stalin was one of the worst most inhumane worst leaders in world history. He killed millions of his own citizens. Killed and tortured millions.

Knowing history does not make one a MAGA except to the youngsters who post here at DL.

by Anonymousreply 45January 23, 2024 9:35 PM

No, that's true. Knowing history is not what makes you MAGA r45. It's your fondness for Nazis and your belief that killing millions of people is somehow better than taxing the rich.

by Anonymousreply 46January 23, 2024 9:39 PM

R46

You are arguing or discussing with two different people.

Comparing those who want to tax the rich with those who kill millions is stupid. That is my only point.

Now comparing one left wing killer of millions with a right wing killer of millions that does make sense.

Now I will let you get back arguing taxes with whoever that poster was.

by Anonymousreply 47January 23, 2024 9:55 PM

Eat a bucket of nails and glass, R43.

by Anonymousreply 48January 23, 2024 10:01 PM

Newsom is such a sleaze bag. But he is a (smart, handsome, sane) version of Trump. BIG image. TV and meme ready. AGGRESSIVE and pushy.

And he is brilliant on TV. He needs to run for President. His quick, on topic, data-filled responses to any question or criticism. At this point in his career, he can't be stumped.

What a fucking sleaze ball.... and I love it. Push back, take control of the narrative, take up all the air in the room. You go boy.

by Anonymousreply 49January 23, 2024 10:01 PM

Fine r47, and sorry for confusing you with the other poster, but here actually is the essence of the Both Sides Doctrine: that if one side is calling for the extermination of Jews and the other side is calling for high taxes on the rich, the Sacred Doctrine of Both Sides Do It requires that both be equally at fault and equally dangerous. That is because the Sacred Doctrine does not ever allow for one side to actually be significantly worse than the other.

And leaving all Nazis and Stalinists aside, that is what we have in a lot of coverage of Trump and a lot of coverage of the Republican Party. The crazier they get, the more the media has to normalize them or pretend that everyone's crazy because the horrifying alternative is that one side might actually be worse, and their whole dogma forbids that. Everybody must ALWAYS be equally wrong and equally at fault.

I have lived in California all my life; now it is a modern, efficient, and forward thinking group of residents. I love the mix of people here; immigrants from around the world add to the cultural interest and surely amp up our economy, fifth largest in the world. I love the mountains, and the deserts, and the coastline. Big Sur, for example, is heaven, a paradise. Our deficit is due to our dependence on income tax as central revenue stream - our property taxes are, proportionately, among the lowest in the nation. I wish Republicans were a bit more skilled and solution-oriented: essentially we are a one part state and we'd be better if Republicans got their shit together.

[quote]When did it become wrong to acknowledge two sides to an issue? Acknowledging another person’s viewpoint is how you WIN an argument.... It seems like the height of stupidity to me, but maybe I’m missing some nuance.

It's good to have an open mind and listen to both sides, but when one have become obvious truth, continuing to give both sides equal weight is disingenuous intellectual conversation allowing contrarian views to be regarded as more important that the actual facts or truth. Example: The world is not both round and flat, depending on personal opinion, it's a proven fact it's round or more accurate term spherical. Joe Biden won the election with 7 million more votes and electoral college, there is no proof of massive voter fraud, it's not an opinion. Barack Obama was born in the U.S., it's a proven fact with authenticated hospital records, news article and witnesses.

When you allow people to ignore the facts just to be a contrarian, you perpetuate false beliefs and lies. So when you give both sides in that case equal time, you are in effect enabling the lie to live on which just dilutes the actual truth. Which is the goal in most cases when people play that game. That's why 50% of Republicans still think Biden didn't win the election.

That's exactly with Bill Maher is doing. Elevating both sides to perpetuate falsity so he can continue to make money by keeping people watching his show.

by Anonymousreply 65January 24, 2024 8:42 AM

[quote] I wish Republicans were a bit more skilled and solution-oriented: essentially we are a one part state and we'd be better if Republicans got their shit together.

No we would not. It's because of Republicans in the 70's that California ended up with ugly oil wells off the coast which resulted in several massive spills that took years to clean up. It's because of Republicans they built a nuclear power plants close to a fault line near San Diego which has finally been shut down.

Drama queen much? It's not a sewer, if it were, housing prices would be the cheapest in the nation not one of the highest. Facts don't lie, it's location, location, location and CA is still one of the highest prized locations to live in. The deficit, which almost all states have is just a drop in the bucket if you understand economics that CA produces the highest GDP in the nation at 3.5 TRILLION per year. Even Texas with their oil cant compete.

Also, if you hate it that much, you have 49 other states to choose from. Stop whining about it, get off your ass and move.

Nope, she renounced that way back in 2008 before Trump even was talking about running. She did it the same year they got engaged. That tells me she's like a lot of women who fallow their husbands ideology once the ring is on. I am ok with that, how she got there is not a problem as long as she's fully grounded in the same belief system.

by Anonymousreply 74January 25, 2024 2:34 AM

Just to shine a little light on the issue, and to call out the expected and relentless trolling by the MAGA cult, California's finances are not like other states. We primarily receive government funding from income taxes, not property, sales, or the other revenue streams more common in other states. This creates a usual boom/bust cycle. (The state deficit, like the federal deficit, always increases when there is a Republican governor). Several years ago under Gov Brown the legislature finally addressed the boom/bust pattern by requiring a certain percentage of the revenue to be put into a "rainy day fund."

2022 saw a record budget surplus. There is a huge drop in income taxes projected for the next fiscal year. There will be a significant deficit... however the state surplus, by fall 2023, was well in excess of 100 Billion.

Newsom, scuzzy douche-bro that he is, would make a great President.

My *dream* ticket is Gavin and Gretchen. I do acknowledge that this will be an issue (rightly so) for people of color. I want a POC on the ticket too — perhaps there is someone out there who has the potential that I just don’t have on my radar. But I believe Gavin/Gretchen is a *grand slam* ticket. Undefeatable in my opinion, Dems could literally just trot to victory with that ticket. Josh Shapiro is at the top of my list too. No idea if he’s ready to compete on a Presidential ticket, but I do also adore the Senator from GA, Raphael Warnock too. I don’t recall her name, but the scrappy young black woman who was bitch-slapping Rethugs during hearings a week or two ago, she has huge potential to me, but she’s still very young, likely needs just a few more years of experience and fine-tuning, but she’s aggressive and tough as hell.

by Anonymousreply 88January 25, 2024 4:42 PM

[quote] But I believe Gavin/Gretchen is a *grand slam* ticket.

Unless this country changes dramatically in the next four years, there are no "grand slam" tickets possible. It'll be the same dreary damn slog it always is, winning over just enough votes in swing states to get an electoral victory.

UNLESS Texas finally does that turning blue thing that's been talked about for decades.

R89, I completely and passionately disagree. It has been soooooo long that Americans have heard leaders who are aggressive and who know how to cast a vision. I believe they would sweep up all of the Independents.

R88

You are correct about it being a dream ticket. You would have to do something truly important and. significant with the VP. And that would be tricky.

by Anonymousreply 91January 25, 2024 5:18 PM

R91 Harris on the Supreme Court, next opening (or, less likely but possible, raising the number of justices to 11 - Congress has the authority to do that). Undeniably it'd hard for Newsom/Whitmer to be the ticket if Kamala was in the mix.

by Anonymousreply 92January 25, 2024 5:52 PM

Be great if she replaced Clarence Thomas r92. But of course this is all fantasy. I suspect she wants to stay as VP and run in 2028.

[quote]Bill is a big Newsom fan

I’ve never seen him so enchanted by a guest. I bet Maher literal sucked Newsom’s cock in a secluded area after the interview.

[quote]I don’t recall her name, but the scrappy young black woman who was bitch-slapping Rethugs during hearings a week or two ago, she has huge potential to me, but she’s still very young, likely needs just a few more years of experience and fine-tuning, but she’s aggressive and tough as hell.

Jasmine Crockett. She's one to watch. Same with Justin Jones, whom I adore.

Hope Hicks probably dreams of fucking Newsom. She loves political cock. And if it's hot it's an extra bonus.

[quote]When did it become wrong to acknowledge two sides to an issue?

When there aren't fucking two valid sides to the issue, dumbass R10.

Republicans don't have a valid point of view or side. They're just fucking wrong. Facts don't have "two sides". Issues like racism, slavery, misogyny, ... none of those have two sides. Trying to pretend there ARE two valid sides to such issues is why this country is so fucked up.

by Anonymousreply 98January 26, 2024 6:35 AM

When the kneejerk response to pointing out the FACT that Republicans are pathologically lying criminally corrupt conmen, frauds, sexual predators, abusive bullies, and seditious traitors is "But but but... BOTH SIDES!", that's when "both sides" is a problem. Trying to deflect from the very real crimes, incompetence, bigotry, and treason of the right-wingers in this country by moving goal posts and shifting attention to imagined or irrelevant "flaws" in the center-left is just insanity. It's wrong. It's a bunch of logical fallacies ("False equivalence" being a big one) all rolled up into one. It doesn't enlighten, it obscures. It makes excuses for the worst side, while raising the bar so high on the good side that there's no way anyone can clear it.

When you hear someone shouting "Both sides!" know only that they're dishonest willfully ignorant trolls who aren't interested in debate or argument, just in shifting blame from those who deserve it to those who don't (but who they hate more anyway for "reasons").

I want him! Any info on his size meat?

Bill Maher's perception on politics and society has been devolving even before the COVID lockdown. It's became obvious to me once the show returned that the isolation did a number on him. He was giving a lot more weight and attention to the absurdity of the far left woke idiocy than the right wing fascism, Trump's coup attempt, and the MAGA anti-Democracy agenda. This is what happens when you don't have any person close to you who can call you out on your bullshit. I was a regular viewer of Real Time since it started on HBO. Last year he even said he got rid of the audiences who would moan or boo, so he now lives in an echo chamber of ditto-heads and sycophants. I couldn't take his attitude any more and stopped watching early last year. I watched a couple of his Club Random shows because of the guests he had on, and it was even worse. He's become unwatchable.

R95, thank you, YES, it was Jasmine Crockett I was describing!! I wanted to whoop and holler listening to her take out their balls, put them on a cutting board, and slice off their testicles, one at a time, with a one minute speech in between each ball being sliced off! She is *amazing*. I will look up the other name you posted.

Even though we only see the elders getting all the press, the truth is that the Dems have a loooooong and wide bench of unbelievable talent coming up. Maybe Gen Z and Millennials will indeed save this country, I’m Gen X, we’ve got some talent out there too (Gavin and Gretchen and Shapiro to name a few). I only wish the party elders would elevate them even more, we need them right fucking now.

by Anonymousreply 103January 31, 2024 11:52 PM

Elder Joe Biden elevated Gen-Xer Kamala Harris. Neither gets enough credit.

by Anonymousreply 104February 1, 2024 12:09 AM

True r104. And Nancy elevated Hakeem, who is hot AF.
