Fine Young Cannibals (FYC)- why was their career so short lived?

And it’s not like they had a successful debut and then their sophomore tanked, killing their career (like was common back then), but their sophomore was a massive success, topping the charts and selling millions of copies and spawning two #1 hits.

And after that they never recorded another studio album.

Why?

“She Drives Me Crazy” is such a classic pop song. It just takes you back in time when you hear it.

They had no charisma and mechanical music. They had a couple of good songs and that was it OP. Some bands have only a short shelf life.

People thought they were another Milli Vanilli.

by Anonymousreply 3December 22, 2022 12:53 AM

R1 that doesn’t explain them not making more music while they were still on top… they just stopped making music. They didn’t “expire”, which I mention in my OP b

I always hated them, their sound, and their looks (especially the lead singer).

Similar to my feelings about that Australian band with the bald giant lead singer...Midnight Oil, or something like that?

Oh, and Thin Lizzy.

Didn't you hear about Natalie, OP?

Actually they did "expire" R4. They had a short shelf life and they ran their course then it was over. It's not exactly a super mystery.

by Anonymousreply 7December 22, 2022 1:03 AM

R7 but they didn’t. Expiring would require releasing more music. Without more music you don’t know if they expired.

I think a lot of decent to good pop-rock bands couldn't stand out as grunge, rap, and pop country became the top sellers in the early 90s. It must have been a shock. Guitar based pop-rock was a staple for 40 year in the music industry.

I guess it is the same as a saxophonist losing work as young people moved from jazz to rock in the 1950s.

If I were in a rock band with a major deal, I would assume things will wind down within 4 years or 2 albums, then try producing.

Their music certainly wasn’t rock.

General Public, The Beat, FYC; it was a lot of bands. Seems like, collectively, they all had good music careers.

Are you Janbot R8? You certainly sound like Janbot.

by Anonymousreply 12December 22, 2022 1:14 AM

What happened to their lead singer? He was in a movie or two and seemed on the brink of "happening"......

Roland Gift today…or, 2020.

The two white guys in FYC were in the English Beat previously and had already had a pretty good career.

Roland Gift had lots of charisma and a distinctive voice but you still need someone to give you good songs (or you did then, at least), and anyway he didn't seem that interested.

Their best song is Ever Fallen In Love from the Raw and the Cooked.

I was having a blast living with a bunch of roommates in London in 1989 and we had the FYC cassette tape and played it over and over endlessly. So they always remind me of happy times.
