Great dramatic and comedic Oscar-winning Actor, with a great personality. They don’t make them like him anymore.

R2 here. Sorry, that's [italic]Charley[/italic] Varrick.
Second favorite would be The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (1974)

Random and I don't know the title of the film.
Matthau goes on the run with a little kid?

The two he made with Glenda Jackson: "House Calls" and "Hopscotch." Both very funny, and they had great chemistry.

I like Pelham most of the ones I've seen. I think he made almost as many bad movies as Michael Caine. The Survivors was just painfully unfunny.

I dislike the actor but love his films. Bad News Bears? Love it.

The Taking of Pelham 123.

The one he did with Miss Carol Burnett, the one with his memorable nude scene. Pete ‘n Tilly?
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 11, 2024 3:39 AM |
I remember reading that he was considered the Cary Grant of Bulgaria.

Another vote for "House Calls."
"You broke my heart!"

I heard a story about Carol Burnett and Walter sitting in First Class on a plane when they were promoting Pete and Tilly (not on list; it was great; Tilly's grief over her son still kills me.)
They're on the plane. Jackie Kennedy Onassis walks on. Matthau quips to Burnett: "oh, great. If this plane goes down YOU"RE getting third billing."

From Op's list the only one I'd watch again is Fortune Cookie.
Pelham 123. and Charley Verrick have been mentioned. I'd add Fail Safe and A Guide for the Married Man

The film with the kid is a comedy. Matthau plays a criminal mastermind and the kid is a preteen who ruins his plots.

He didn't have a very big role in Fail-Safe. But the slap was memorable. They'd never have that in a film made today.

R22 you really like that movie???

You left out "None of the above", OP.

R14 that is the whitest person I have ever seen and I have seen an albino or two...
| by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 13, 2024 2:19 AM |
HOPSCOTCH : “Hallooooou, this is Mrs Eleanor Roouuusevelt”, and Glenda Jackson chewing the scenery and giving an acting lesson while drinking a cup of coffee…

I can't be reminded of Walter fucking Matthau all the damned time! Jesus.

The odd couple. A slob and a meticulous one. It worked.

I guess we're not even pretending that *The Sunshine Boys* is in the running.

Yes, R23. I saw it at the theater in '83 with my Oklahoma cousins, and subsequently a few more times during the VHS era. I have it on DVD somewhere, but haven't looked at it again in probably a couple of decades.
It amusingly and compassionately captures the gradual radicalization of the Robin Williams character into what we today would characterize as a 'doomsday prepper' or a MAGAt, and his subsequent disillusionment with the hypocrisy of his survivalist camp's cult leader (James Wainwright). The survivalist right-wingers are shown to be a pretty sorry and stupid bunch, so I can see how it's off-putting to some. :)

R30 what a bizarre response. Trying to twist a Walter Matthau thread into a Trump MAGA narrative. So witty… ;)

How did he ever keep his hands off Jack Lemmon’s ass?

I like Plaza Suite but strangely it's the 3 women and not Walter who steal the movie.

It doesn't sound to me like you've ever seen the film. It's an accurate description. Robin Williams' character becomes a gun-collecting, reactionary, right wing nut, and Walter Matthau's character remains deadpan, balanced, and tries (when circumstances force him to) to bring him out of it.
Trump didn't invent the far right, you know. He only summoned them into his service by repeating their rhetoric. These people have been around for many decades, collecting weapons and bracing (hoping!) for the end of society, or of the world.

The Laughing Policeman opposite Bruce Dern. I find his 70s output pretty good. But why the push to have him seem so desirable? I second House Calls, Hopscotch, and Charley Varrick.
Has anyone seen California Suite?
| by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 13, 2024 3:57 PM |
I saw "California Suite" when I was 12. All I remember is Richard Pryor in tight red bikini briefs. Sorry, Walter.

R34 I have seen the movie and I remember thinking it wasn’t funny and poorly made, but maybe I need a second look. I’m not saying those people don’t exist and yes they’ve been around forever. I just didn’t like you trying to make my dislike of the movie into some republican thing.

Yes, the film is The Survivors. Strange and strangely funny

I didn't. I said that the film's depiction of survivalists made it offputting to "some." If that's not you, then I wasn't talking about you. °–°

R35 - Walter said he saw himself as a great lover but others saw him as a shaggy dog.

Grumpy Old Men is comfort food. I’ll never get tired of it. I especially love watching it during winter when there’s snow outside. Feels like I’m right in the neighborhood.
