Who was the better actress? Bergman won all the awards but Garbo was unanimously loved by just about all her contemporaries.

I like them both. Garbo is good in her way, especially in her silent films; but she had a limited range. Bergman was by far the better overall actress, in my estimation.

Greta, despite being a tsundre, was more pinup material the lass lads masturbated to... while Bergman was an actor, not just an actress and a bit of hard-on killer because of it... meaning Greta didn't have as much range but she excelled in what she did.

(I would have posted Garbo's docu, too, but can't find a copy of one of the better ones that included her interracial scissoring and international spying.. )

Bergman seemed a lot more down to earth and less pretentious. She seemed to get along with all her fellow actresses, whether they were Joan Crawford or Lauren Bacall.
Garbo infamously ensured that Joan had no scenes with her in Grand Hotel because she was terrified of being upstaged (which is what ended up happening anyway even without sharing screentime), only to regret it when she actually saw Joan up close and found her to be beautiful. Joan apparently was pissed when she learned she wouldn't have any scenes with Garbo.
Garbo also notoriously avoided Bergman despite Bergman's best attempts to meet her. It wouldn't be until years after Garbo retired that they were at the same party and Garbo approached Bergman in a bizarre exchange where Garbo warned Bergman not to vacation in a certain place because the natives would loot her. Then she walked away and that was the end of their only encounter.
