It happens.
It’s only happened to me once. It was Arnold’s “The Sixth Day”. I was around 12 or 13 and I had gone with my Dad. I remember falling asleep and seeing my Dad passed out in his seat beside me and the people in front of us were passed out too.

We used to call this the “$7 nap.”
I fell asleep when I took my nieces to a showing of The SpongeBob SquarePants movie on a Thanksgiving weekend eons ago.

I fell asleep on a date in college. Can’t remember what movie - some animated movie with Bette Midler as a voice maybe? Or maybe it was a live action Bette Midler movie. This would have been around 1990 but I don’t care enough to check IMDb. I was still dating girls at the time so…
More recently I dozed off during Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows. I didn’t sleep through the whole thing but it would have been time better spent if I had

I've fallen asleep several times in a movie theater and I rarely go to movies. It's a combination of the darkness and the air conditioning. I've also fallen asleep at a planetarium.

Many times at a movie theater and a few times at live performances. The most embarrassing was at a Broadway matinee where I was dead to the world midway through the first act. It's probably not a great idea to get so stoned beforehand but I never fall asleep if I'm interested in what's going on, and it's almost always a fantastic nap.

Forgot that I fell asleep during a play at the Ashland (Oregon) Shakespeare Festival. My friends made so much fun of me for that.

Slept through Flubber (97), that shitty first Hellboy movie (torture), first Harry Potter (my date was pissed) and most recently that Star Wars movie where Darth Vader shows up and kicks ass in the last 5 minutes...so I slept through the only redeeming part of that shitshow.

I didn't fall asleep during the horrible Wild Hogs movie but I could have. I had walked to the movie theater and it was a hot day. About 30 minutes in I knew I hated it and wanted to leave but since it was a hot day and the theater was airconditioned I put my earbuds in and listed to my iPod for the rest of the movie.

All the time in those deliciously, comfortable reclining seats! So comfortable.

I used to work overnights and go to cheap matinees. I bought a ticket to Bulworth and never saw any of it. I hear I didn’t miss much.

Lately, it’s nearly every time- no matter how loud the movie is. I think it’s the sheer relief of being able to disconnect from my cell phone 🤪

Falling asleep in a movie theater is tantamount to "Two Hours of Living Dangerously."
Be careful out there.
| by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 19, 2022 3:05 AM |
I fall asleep almost every time. I’ve also fallen asleep at plays. It is embarrassing. If a movie or play holds my interest throughout, I don’t fall asleep. But a few boring minutes + reclining chairs and I’m out.
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 19, 2022 3:35 AM |
Even if the film interests me, if the seats are too comfortable I fall asleep and stay asleep. Not a light sleep either.

In the 1970s I fell asleep in a theater during a showing of the Glenda Jackson movie "Stevie."

I fell asleep during Out of Africa. The theater was overheated, the scenery was lush, the acting wooden, the plot soporific.
Ah, it was a glorious nap.

| by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 19, 2022 6:57 AM |
I think it's only been at most 3 movies, but the only one I recall (probably because it was within the past 5 years) was The Nutcracker. God what a snore fest. And yes, they were reclining seats.

Not to hijack this thread, but for those of you who regularly fall asleep during the day, even in a dark room in a comfy chair, consider getting checked for sleep apnea. It has really bad health consequences and can be treated pretty easily. Everyone deserves regular good sleep.

Lots of mine are jet lag related as I can never sleep in public unless exhausted.
Jackie Brown
Donnie Brasco
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
Titanic
Though I do think at least two of those were also terrible!

I’ve fallen asleep a few times at the movies, & always feel it coming on. The longest nap I took was during the awful kids’ movie Surf’s Up, with my little nephew & the family. We all wanted to see the Shrek sequel but my father refused bc he’d already seen it.

Queenstown, South Island, New Zealand. Just returned from trekking the Dusky. Went to see Catch Me If You Can. I didn't realize I'd fallen asleep, until I was woken up by an usher, who told me I was snoring so loud that the patrons couldn't hear the film. Oh, uhhhh, ta mate. I got up and walked out of the film.

The only time I ever fell asleep in a movie theater was way back in 1984 in the French film "A Sunday in the Country". Kind of a dreamy film and it was warm in the afternoon.

Twice
Bram Stroker's Dracula. It was a midnight screening and I was just not up for it.
Quantum of Solace. I was kind of drunk and the movie was really boring. I actually got ribbed by another person because I was apparently snoring. I was so embarrassed.

I've fallen asleep at the opera (I've learned never to see any Handel operas or "Parsifal" again, no matter how beautiful some parts of them are--they're just too long and monotonous for me), and also at classical music performances; but never at a film.
But people do. It's not that big of a deal.

I liked the first one but not the second.
Despite your implication it is somehow impossible to dislike them, I will note the first "Hellboy" has an 81% critics favorable rating (very good, but not unanimous) and a 66% favorable rating with audiences.

I fell asleep during the theatrical re-release of The Exorcist and started snoring until my friend elbowed me. I love the movie, but I've already seen it several hundred times.
Also during The Hunt For Red October, which I had no interest in seeing in the first place.

Star Wars - when released in 1977
Ricky Horror Picture Show - in 1977/1978
I was 17 and a college freshman who could stay awake for anything it seemed...but not for these films
Star Wars was just ridiculous and bored me right to sleep with its cheesy characters and dive bar scenes. That anyone would find that funny or exciting or even gently entertaining puzzles me still.
Rocky Horror was very clearly overhyped by a silly girl who had done the whole midnight showings thing in high school, but a few friends and I went as her guests, a holiday present (lucky us.) I more or les knew what to expect and hated it immediately.Musical. Kitschy. And the whole daring sexuality business was really grating. Enough to put me of transexuals and trans and he/she crossdressing or masquerading confusion films popular at the time: Tootsie, Víctor/Victoria, etc.

I would suggest Uwe Boll movies R42, it sounds like you'd appreciate an experience where everyone is miserable rather than enjoying themselves.
Friends laughed at me for falling asleep during Pulp Fiction, but it was my sixth time seeing it in the theater. If they'd had their acts together and we'd all gone to one showing as a group I would have remained alert throughout!
The Cider House Rules might as well have shot a tranq dart out of the screen at me. The only things I remember about it are that it starred Michael Caine and my first boyfriend laughed about how quickly and deeply I fell asleep.
| by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 20, 2022 1:56 AM |
Sometimes horrible things become magnified in one's memory, R45. Or I meant to write "its dive bar and other stupid scenes " Mostly I recall it was so embarrassingly bad that I slept though all 5 or 6 hours of it.
