I just watched it on Showtime.
Awful, awful, awful movie.
Tries way too hard to be funny/quirky.
Frenetic, confusing, silly, and ridiculous.
It seriously makes me question the judgment of the Academy, in nominating all three leads for an Oscar.
Which will put this movie in the same league as all the other movies and actors who have won Oscars in the past two decades.
Over rated. Undeserving. And quickly forgotten.
Watch this movie if you haven't, and then you'll understand.

Unlike the olden days, if you now find yourself in the minority opinion on a movie or TV show, there is immediate access to dozens of reviews and thinkpiece articles that explain what it is that you missed. An intellectually curious person might seek those out.
It's totally ok to dislike any film. I wish more people would stop watching movies if they aren't entertained and the subject matter or style isn't for them. It's another to project that dislike on to the film itself and use words like terrible or awful over and over.
The things I liked about this movie are actually what was probably a massive turnoff for some of the people here. It's good that movies are made that befuddle old people--it shows the medium is growing and advancing. But in this case, people who don't like it are probably the same people who hate shows like Arrested Development (its a very obtuse type of comedy that confuses a lot of brains instead of tickling them.)

After an hour, I literally could not stand to watch it anymore.
It was crazy, frantic, confusing, and annoying all at the same time.
The movie was just TOO MUCH.
So much so, that I found myself actually angry and aggravated after that one hour.
I cannot explain it, but it literally made me hate this movie.

She's not a bad actress, but let's not pretend she's been giving egregiously overlooked performances all this time.
And while Blanchett did not deserve her Oscar for The Aviator (which many saw as a make up Oscar for her losing to Paltrow in 98), her performances in Blue Jasmine and this year's Tar were undeniably worthy. IF she loses this year, it will not be because anyone was better than her, it will be for optics only (either the voters saying Fuck You to the Academy for how they treated Andrea Riseborough or a politically correct Oscar for Yeoh).

I ached to leave the theater to get away from Everything Everywhere. I shot deeply pleading glances at my cousin, who had suggested we see it (I’d never heard of it), but she either didn’t pick them up or liked it or wanted to get her money’s worth.
Sitting there was like watching someone scream and caper about the room, writhing. while turning up a blender full of gravel to 11. I found it all but unendurable and would not have nominated it or anyone involved in it for anything.
I find Michelle Yeoh a deeply appealing person and I’m sorry she was associated with it.
I tried to watch Tár at home but kept finding that my attention had wandered despite my mild interest in seeing how the over-achieving upper crust are imagined to live.

It's a movie that proves just how corrosive the oversaturation of Marvel movies have been to cinema. For so many of the people who love it, it's the equivalent of eating at Olive Garden after a steady diet of McDonald's and Burger King. Comic book movies have made audiences accustomed to so much stupidity that a movie that employs the same tropes in service of ordinary characters instead of superheroes feels like a vast improvement.
Really, it's the same old shit, with the dubious addition of some really juvenile humor that you'd expect from the dorks whose first movie was about a farting corpse.

I really enjoyed the movie. A bit too much of the martial arts maybe but it was ridiculous and fun. My whole group laughed uproariously at the hot dog fingers part. I thought Michelle Yeoh was great and deserved her award. Ke Huy Kwan played a fun character, very sweet and charming. It's debatable whether the performance was Oscar worthy but I'm OK with his nomination. He turned up on Steven Colbert right after I saw the movie and he was a real sweetheart. Humble and grateful.
Midway I recognized the IRS agent as Jamie Lee. I thought she was great, too.
The film captured the overwhelming confusions of modern life as well as the bittersweet connections of family ties. I can relate because I'm in the midst of doing taxes and am plagued with many of the mundane responsibilities that we all face. My parents are gone now but the elderly father situation spoke to me. The film was a fun, creative break for me. Very wacky and imaginative. Thumbs up!

It was an interesting movie that was a little sluggish at times but overall it held my attention. I could see a lot of my sister and her daughter’s relationship being played out.
The Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan acting nominations were well deserved, but Jaime Lee Curtis is a head scratcher. She, by far, was the movie’s weakest link. She pretty much played the part the same as she plays every role she’s in, which is bland. I got a kick out of the hot dog hands universe, but it still wasn’t enough to elevate Curtis to a point where I could say she deserves an award.

They're used to stories being told slower and more deliberately. But this one speaks to the hyper-plugged-in youth of today. It's also a bravura piece of genre-blending. It's a sci-fi/action/family drama/immigrant story/comedy/romance, and it does all of those pieces amazingly well.

r36 While I loved the film, I can totally see how it is too much for a lot of people. Babylon gets a similar reaction by many but what's on screen is what you get. With Everything, the idea presents all these different universes and through frenetic camerawork and editing, its packing so much information in that it can just become disorienting and chaotic. It's not for everyone.
It says nothing about a viewer's age or sophistication just because they can't tolerate it. But you'll see so many people just dumping on it without any capacity to articulate why.
The directors had one of the first billion views music videos on youtube. There's funny wild ideas throughout.

I didn't like Everything Everywhere, R91, but I really appreciate your defense of the movie.
I actually did like the movie the first time I saw it. The frenetic pacing didn't bother me, and I was entertained because I didn't know where the story was going, and was willing to take the plunge with the filmmakers. The second time, though, the pacing grated on me because I knew the contours of the film; now that I knew where the film was going, I felt that the filmmakers actually didn't. They were just throwing things at the screen to get a laugh, and without the element of surprise, a lot of the random jokes fell really flat.
I think the fundamental disconnect between those who love the film and those who hate it is that the fans appreciate the frenetic pace because they think there's a lot to unpack, whereas those who dislike it think the pacing is meant to cover up the fact that there just isn't much there.

That's likely because you were raised at a time where mediocrity in films (in all media, really) was the best anyone could hope for. It's been a good 20 years since the fall of American Cinema, so if you were raised on Marvel and Blumhouse and found footage bullshit, then of course you're going to think this film was amazing. You don't know any better. Your post all but says it. If we put you in front of The Godfather or The Exorcist or Citizen Kane, you'd be checking your texts in under 10 minutes.

EEAAO is the worst kind of bad movie because it thinks it's a great movie and Jamie Lee and MICHELLE YEOH really want us to believe it. I genuinely wanted the kid from the Goonies to have a hit movie but the whole thing is just one big embarrassment. I'm a fan of Michelle Yeoh (not sure if she's a great actress, but she has a great, commanding screen presence), and I went into this movie wanting very much to like it, if not love it.
The OP used the word "frenetic", and that was the first thing I noticed about it. Even in the first 5-10 minutes, before any of the surreal sci-fi shenanigans kicked in, it felt very manic in the way the relatively simple first scenes were staged. I found that a little off-putting.
When all the "WTF?" stuff kicked in, I had a better understanding of what they were going for, but I didn't think it worked particularly well. The tone of the whole thing was off...like they were trying to blend too many wildly different film genres into one. As much as I appreciate the ambition, I can't say I'm a fan of how it was executed.
It actually took me about a week and a half to finish the thing. I could only take it in small portions. There were parts of it I really did enjoy, but overall I found it a bit of a chore to watch.
And I don't think a single performance in it was worthy of an Oscar nom.

I’ve never seen a Marvel - or comic book - movie; and likely never will. Not a fan of American violent movies either.
That said, I loved EEAAO. It was the audacious premise of connecting parallel lives and threads which I found captivating. It reminded me of the originality of the Matrix movie.
I find it Oscar worthy for its innovation: tackling various subjects and stepping outside the all-too-repetitive American genres.
I found Yeoh’s performance superior to Blanchett’s and am/was a Cate fan.

(For other examples: see Trump and QAnon et al.) Hence why the film elicits frustration and anger in some viewers: it goes beyond some self-imposed perceptual limits. At some level, people know this and it is triggering.

I didn't care for it, and that incredible review from Richard Brody at the New Yorker highlighted all my problems. It was like a Jackie Chan film written by Charlie Kaufman if directed by Richard Donner -- minus the fun, excitement, or intelligence.
Brody was right when he said the movie felt like an audition to do a Marvel franchise.

Well, I watched most of this dreck; but I decided it wasn't worth wasting anymore time on, so I didn't finish it.
I'm not linking to it, but there's a DL thread now about 'maladaptive daydreaming.' I think that might explain what this film was about, or maybe just 'maladaptive moviemaking.'
Incidentally, since the insults on DL are everywhere, all-at-once, all the time now, I suggest we streamline the process of insulting each other by creating a handy reference chart.

R208 gets it. The film is scooping up awards because everything else is tired Oscar bait. EEAAO feels fresh by comparison and is a worthy to have in the Academy's books. The Oscars are a record of the prevailing stories, stars, and styles of their time. None of the other films speak to now in a way that deserves Best Picture this year.
R206 The Daniels met in film school, mastered their craft, and put their voice and influences into a film that became a huge hit. So what if they liven up the sagging MCU? The reviewer said that based on the Russo brothers success with MCU after doing great work on Community. Many people who worked on that show have gone on to have huge careers, win Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, and yes work for Marvel.
Ignore R217, a BAFTA dolt looking for the dustiest, whitest film possible. EEAAO is the frontrunner for Best Picture and has swept the major awards of the season.
R220 What? The film was so bizarre it is instantly memorable: dildo and buttplug fights, hot dog fingers, rocks with googley eyes, the white room, the exploding confetti head, the raccoon, and JLC looking horrible in yellow. It's a tedious family drama smartly made into a buzzworthy acid trip of a film for today's social media landscape. Again, points for relevancy.
R229 The Daniels (DS & DK) wrote and directed it. They also have a background in VFX and editing. They're full auteurs who met at Emerson. They did the hit music video for Turn Down for What (DK is the male dancer) and the indie hit film, Swiss Army Man with Daniel Radcliffe as a reanimated corpse. If you know their work, EEAAO represents the culmination of everything they've done so far.

CODA won because of the late-season backlash against Power of the Dog. Voters wanted a film without uncomfortable controversies. How often do deaf artists who aren't Marlee Matlin, get a chance to be honored?
Birdman utilized completely different film techniques (long takes vs rapid jump cuts) from EEAAO and though overhyped, it did deserve the BP win for that alone.
The Favourite should've won but was too British (and sapphic) for some wanting distance from the film's BAFTA sweep. Green Book winning very much in line with the sentimental Oscar wins from the 80s and 90s (see: Forrest Gump) and again tackles the evergreen topic of racism in America.
The Artist has historic value as the second silent film to win BP. How often does the chance come along to award a silent film, shot in black and white, that was also well made?

Just watched it last night. Enjoyed it more than I thought it would. It takes a little time to warm up to the story and style, but once I got into it the movie was surprisingly deep while still entertaining. I agree that the two female leads (Yeoh and Hsu) were excellent, while JLC was okay. I like JLC, but I never bought her as that character. Also nice seeing a veteran like James Hong again again.
I still think Triangle of Sadness had a broader, more relevant message but EEAAO would be a strong second for me. I've still to watch Tar and Banshees, and will then have watched all the nominees I had any interest in seeing.

I could not care less about race, about being owed, any of that shit, when I make my personal picks. However, when I vote, I am a bit more strategic if I know the person I would choose out of the five has zero chance. I will then vote for the person I think has the best chance to take down the front runner if the race is close.
This year it's not as strategic as other years because most of the people who are in 2nd place are people I think deserve it. But to give you an example, I held my nose and voted for Angela Bassett because she's the only one who can unseat JLC. I thought of the five, Hong Chau deserves the award, but she's never going to get it. If she had a chance, I would have happily voted for her, but she's probably 5th in the category. I loathe JLC and her wretched performance so much, that I would vote for a non-performance in a Marvel movie if it helped keep her from winning an Oscar.
The other performances are either neck and neck (I voted for Butler and Blanchett), or so far behind that it doesn't matter (I voted for Barry Keoghan because he deserves the win, but we all know Short Round will get it). Same for Director. I know those two ass clowns will win no matter what, so I voted for Todd Field, who I think deserves it.
Picture I voted for Top Gun even though I didn't like it because it's the only film that could possibly unseat EEAAO. Of the 10 nominated, I would have voted for Tar (though it was not my pick for Best Film of the Year). I loved it, and it's probably #2 or #3 on my list, but it has no shot to win. Voted for Banshees for Original Screenplay even though I didn't much care for the film, because I think that's the only award it's going to get, if it gets any at all. I thought Tar deserved it. Adapted was a shit category, and there was nothing in there worth nominating this year, so I voted for Sarah Polley because I thought she's done some great work in the past.

And it's not unfounded to say the movie is feel good only. For all of the film's machinations, it exists primarily on an emotional rather than an intellectual level. Everything in the movie is right there on the surface. The dialogue is almost entirely expositional, even in the emotional moments when it doesn't need to be. That's why when people describe what the movie is about, they don't talk about the subtext, they tend to just recount the plot.

Taste has historically referred to the ability to distinguish quality. Preference is exactly what it says on the tin.
Using food as an analogy, diet is preference, but taste is the ability to distinguish bad food from high quality food. I may not like asparagus, but I have the taste to be able to tell when it is extremely well cooked compared to when it is rotten.
So you may not like the movie, but if you are unable to determine the quality aspects of it - and thus unable to determine why other people did like the movie - then you have bad taste. And you can learn taste through education and analysis. Logic and explanation.
I'm not critiquing your preferences - nobody should be doing that. I wouldn't critique you picking fish over chicken for dinner. But taste is more than relative preference, and that's what awards should be about too. Not a popularity contest but an assessment of the movie's quality.

r389, in my case, the instincts arose when I was a child and was scared to death of my own father. I spent a lot of time learning to read him to know when I needed to hide. I predicted that he would attempt suicide not once, but twice during my lifetime; the last attempt happening just before xmas as I predicted he would do to try to get attention. I didn't predict his attempt at murdering my mom but in my mind I saw him murdering all of us, meaning my siblings as well. PTSD is a horrible thing that I don't wish on anyone but it did shape me into the person I am who can read most people.
My instincts have served me well. Not everyone has them but then again, not everyone needed to.

R387. EEAAO uniquely uses the multiverse as a metaphor for nihilism. Or if it isn't original, then I just haven't seen that connection anywhere else.
It FEELS intuitive though. Because the multiverse makes us ever smaller in the grand scheme of things. Of course, comic books have been doing the multiverse forever, but it's often seen as this exciting thing with unlimited potential.
Yet the reality is, in comics and in real life, that a multiverse actually strips us of free will, uniqueness, and purpose. Or at least, that's how it often feels to me.
And Stranger Things does not have a multiverse. Not how I remember it anyway. They have ONE parallel universe filled with monsters, and that's about it. And that parallel universe might not even really exist depending on how you interpret Season 4 and what happens in S5.

R387, let’s agree to disagree, then, as scientifically/medically speaking, all humans have “instincts”….since you seem to be speaking in the literal sense.
And speaking of literal, your post @ R391 is a materialistic/hard reality interpretation of the question previously posed. The query involved the instincts….promptings…..flashes of insight….inexplicable sensations, etc that we (as a collective of humanity) all have from time to time (as noted in the post relating to déjà vu and other anomalous things like serendipity/coincidence, and conditions like PLS and FAS.)
Sounds like your backstory is quite involved, R387, and this may explain your perceptions regarding many things.

It was way too out there and violent for me on a plane- I’ll give it another shot streaming on a large screen. But the violence and constant use of metaphors is hard. Can’t the essential drama and valid story be displayed in reality? Always much more powerful. And the martial arts violence has always been a hard swallow for me- no different tgat the good guys without a scratch and the bad guys mauled in melees of special effects in the Marvel films that bore the heck out of me.
So I’m not likely to like it so far!

I agree with r391. Lots of people who grew up around unpredictable volatile family members develop hyper-vigilance. They become very adept at looking for potential red flags in people, because they do it unconsciously as it’s a trauma response and a survival mechanism. Red flags can be very subtle and a lot of people can’t really express what tips them off.
There’s a really great book called “The Gift of Fear” by Gavin DeBecker (I think that’s his name) that talks about how important it is to honor your gut is when it comes to feeling uneasy about people or situations. A lot of times people tend to dismiss those feelings if they can’t articulate why they feel uneasy.
