I just watched it on Showtime.
Awful, awful, awful movie.
Tries way too hard to be funny/quirky.
Frenetic, confusing, silly, and ridiculous.
It seriously makes me question the judgment of the Academy, in nominating all three leads for an Oscar.
Which will put this movie in the same league as all the other movies and actors who have won Oscars in the past two decades.
Over rated. Undeserving. And quickly forgotten.
Watch this movie if you haven't, and then you'll understand.

Unlike the olden days, if you now find yourself in the minority opinion on a movie or TV show, there is immediate access to dozens of reviews and thinkpiece articles that explain what it is that you missed. An intellectually curious person might seek those out.
It's totally ok to dislike any film. I wish more people would stop watching movies if they aren't entertained and the subject matter or style isn't for them. It's another to project that dislike on to the film itself and use words like terrible or awful over and over.
The things I liked about this movie are actually what was probably a massive turnoff for some of the people here. It's good that movies are made that befuddle old people--it shows the medium is growing and advancing. But in this case, people who don't like it are probably the same people who hate shows like Arrested Development (its a very obtuse type of comedy that confuses a lot of brains instead of tickling them.)
Anyone here love Arrested Development but hate this movie?

You hit on something very key R34, in regards to my reaction to this movie.
After an hour, I literally could not stand to watch it anymore.
It was crazy, frantic, confusing, and annoying all at the same time.
The movie was just TOO MUCH.
So much so, that I found myself actually angry and aggravated after that one hour.
I cannot explain it, but it literally made me hate this movie.
Interestingly, I have never had this type of reaction to a movie before.

I hope Michelle Yeoh gets best actress. Long overdue, and we won't have to bear another insufferable speech from Cate Blanchett, for what is a completely undeserved third oscar.
Though this has always been Danielle Deadwyler's oscar. And whoever wins should note that two black actresses were screwed out of nominations so their win has a tinge of bias to it.

R39, how would Michelle Yeoh's win be overdue? You aren't automatically afforded an acting trophy simply because you've been in the business for 30+ years. Yeoh has hardly been overlooked. She's not a bad actress, but let's not pretend she's been giving egregiously overlooked performances all this time.
And while Blanchett did not deserve her Oscar for The Aviator (which many saw as a make up Oscar for her losing to Paltrow in 98), her performances in Blue Jasmine and this year's Tar were undeniably worthy. IF she loses this year, it will not be because anyone was better than her, it will be for optics only (either the voters saying Fuck You to the Academy for how they treated Andrea Riseborough or a politically correct Oscar for Yeoh).

I ached to leave the theater to get away from Everything Everywhere. I shot deeply pleading glances at my cousin, who had suggested we see it (I’d never heard of it), but she either didn’t pick them up or liked it or wanted to get her money’s worth.
Sitting there was like watching someone scream and caper about the room, writhing. while turning up a blender full of gravel to 11. I found it all but unendurable and would not have nominated it or anyone involved in it for anything.
I find Michelle Yeoh a deeply appealing person and I’m sorry she was associated with it.
I tried to watch Tár at home but kept finding that my attention had wandered despite my mild interest in seeing how the over-achieving upper crust are imagined to live.

It's a movie that proves just how corrosive the oversaturation of Marvel movies have been to cinema. For so many of the people who love it, it's the equivalent of eating at Olive Garden after a steady diet of McDonald's and Burger King. Comic book movies have made audiences accustomed to so much stupidity that a movie that employs the same tropes in service of ordinary characters instead of superheroes feels like a vast improvement.
Really, it's the same old shit, with the dubious addition of some really juvenile humor that you'd expect from the dorks whose first movie was about a farting corpse.

I really enjoyed the movie. A bit too much of the martial arts maybe but it was ridiculous and fun. My whole group laughed uproariously at the hot dog fingers part. I thought Michelle Yeoh was great and deserved her award. Ke Huy Kwan played a fun character, very sweet and charming. It's debatable whether the performance was Oscar worthy but I'm OK with his nomination. He turned up on Steven Colbert right after I saw the movie and he was a real sweetheart. Humble and grateful.
Midway I recognized the IRS agent as Jamie Lee. I thought she was great, too.
The film captured the overwhelming confusions of modern life as well as the bittersweet connections of family ties. I can relate because I'm in the midst of doing taxes and am plagued with many of the mundane responsibilities that we all face. My parents are gone now but the elderly father situation spoke to me. The film was a fun, creative break for me. Very wacky and imaginative. Thumbs up!

It was an interesting movie that was a little sluggish at times but overall it held my attention. I could see a lot of my sister and her daughter’s relationship being played out.
The Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan acting nominations were well deserved, but Jaime Lee Curtis is a head scratcher. She, by far, was the movie’s weakest link. She pretty much played the part the same as she plays every role she’s in, which is bland. I got a kick out of the hot dog hands universe, but it still wasn’t enough to elevate Curtis to a point where I could say she deserves an award.
| by Anonymous | reply 70 | February 21, 2023 10:18 PM |
Funny for all the hate Viola, Jamie Lee and Sheryl get for being pretentious, yet Cate's smug "I'm better than you and this is beneath me" posturing every time she wins (Because she shows up for every awards show) is somehow supposed to be endearing. I was done with her after she came for Sandra Bullock at the oscars, which was mean spirited and in very poor taste.

r36 While I loved the film, I can totally see how it is too much for a lot of people. Babylon gets a similar reaction by many but what's on screen is what you get. With Everything, the idea presents all these different universes and through frenetic camerawork and editing, its packing so much information in that it can just become disorienting and chaotic. It's not for everyone.
It says nothing about a viewer's age or sophistication just because they can't tolerate it. But you'll see so many people just dumping on it without any capacity to articulate why.
The directors had one of the first billion views music videos on youtube. There's funny wild ideas throughout.

I didn't like Everything Everywhere, R91, but I really appreciate your defense of the movie.
I actually did like the movie the first time I saw it. The frenetic pacing didn't bother me, and I was entertained because I didn't know where the story was going, and was willing to take the plunge with the filmmakers. The second time, though, the pacing grated on me because I knew the contours of the film; now that I knew where the film was going, I felt that the filmmakers actually didn't. They were just throwing things at the screen to get a laugh, and without the element of surprise, a lot of the random jokes fell really flat.
I think the fundamental disconnect between those who love the film and those who hate it is that the fans appreciate the frenetic pace because they think there's a lot to unpack, whereas those who dislike it think the pacing is meant to cover up the fact that there just isn't much there.
| by Anonymous | reply 92 | February 22, 2023 9:19 PM |
I enjoyed Babylon while also realizing it was overstuffed, so to say. But EEAAO should really not be compared to it. That one is a totally frenetic, frenzied sloppy mess of a movie. Babylon is exquisitely precise and calculating in every scene.

That's likely because you were raised at a time where mediocrity in films (in all media, really) was the best anyone could hope for. It's been a good 20 years since the fall of American Cinema, so if you were raised on Marvel and Blumhouse and found footage bullshit, then of course you're going to think this film was amazing. There’s always been fluff or throwaway movies, but on the other end of the spectrum … films like The Godfather were massive box office hits that were the national conversation for months. Today, people would complain about it being a “pretentious arthouse film” with “no likable characters.”

| by Anonymous | reply 108 | February 23, 2023 5:52 AM |
R108 10 films total Besides EEAAO
Maverick Top Gun, The Banshees of Inisherin, Tar, All Quiet on the Western Front, The Fabelmans, Avatar:The Way of Water
PLUS Elvis, Women Talking and Triangle of Sadness which don't have a chance of winning BP
Ten films total and the last 3 I listed don't have a chance IMHO

I would love to see Maverick Top Gun win Best Picture.

Yes, there's nothing generational about hating on EEAAO.
It's just that they don't make movies like the Godfather or the Exorcist or Citizen Kane!
I love all three films, and other work by all three directors. The Lady from Shanghai and Chimes at Midnight are great. So is Cruising and the French Connection. I even sort of liked One From the Heart.
Bitter old cunts who hate younger people for being young are so entertaining. And when you die, it's all upside for the world.
So keep being you, you amusing old piece of shit!

[quote]R32: Anyone defending this movie, hasn't seen it. Watch the movie, then get back to us. You'll hate it too.
Nope, I've seen it four times, and loved it.
I see we're back to the schtick of far right trolls hating on films that contain strong female characters, especially non-white ones, but concealing what their hatred is really about, and instead strafing the thread with a lot of highly subjective, zero-substance criticisms.
I have no interest in engaging with that sock-trollery.
Carry on, y'all. Just know that nobody real agrees with you.
| by Anonymous | reply 115 | February 23, 2023 8:57 PM |
I just think it's silly so many on here are saying people have shit taste if they liked this movie. Maybe accept that people like different things but it doesn't make their viewpoint worse and movie on? But no, be immature about it all.

They (and I use 'they' conditionally; it's really one person with multiple socks) have an agenda, to attack films with non-white, female characters.
| by Anonymous | reply 117 | February 23, 2023 9:03 PM |
Of course, it's ridiculous and unbelievably defensive and childish and petulant to say if one didn't like this tedious movie it was for reasons of misoygny and racism. It's of course an utterly subjective view, one's opinion of a movie. If one goes around and attacks someone's character for merely not liking a movie you love, it goes to show how pathetic you are.
| by Anonymous | reply 118 | February 23, 2023 9:03 PM |
I saw this film. It was entertaining for awhile, then, it became repetitious. It's certainly not Oscar nod worthy.
| by Anonymous | reply 120 | February 23, 2023 9:13 PM |
R118, it speaks really poorly of the movie that its most strident defenders have to make up ulterior motives for why people dislike the movie instead of dealing with the actual criticisms people have.
But it just has to be misogyny, because if there's one thing gay men despise, it's strong female characters.
| by Anonymous | reply 121 | February 23, 2023 9:25 PM |
If the movie had stayed as some kind of wacky dramedy with Michelle Yeoh at the laundromat, I would have seen justification behind her Best Actress nomination. Instead it became a third rate Rick and Morty episode.

The only thing I dislike about it at this time is that it would cost me 20 bucks to watch it on Prime. Not gonna pay that.

Me too, r123.
I have no agenda. One of my fave movies was The Color Purple. I was it in the theater back in the day & was one of the only white people there.
But this? It was junk. Like a Saturday morning cartoon…hyper jump cuts. It was all over the place.
And worst of all? It was cheesy. Goofy.
OF COURSE the Asian family owned a laundry mat. OF COURSE the Asian mom was fixated on working all he time. OF COURSE her daughter was “queer.” OF COURSE the grandpa is homophobic.
People are saying how creative the movie was when it, quite ironically, the characters were boring stereotypes.
It’s just CGI vomit…everywhere all at once. 🤮

An excerpt from a review of EEAAO:
"It’s as embarrassing to say it as it is to watch onscreen: she says that she 'put everything on a bagel,' and she means not the flavor but the universe itself—therefore 'the bagel becomes the truth,' and the truth is that 'nothing matters.' (Yes, she both wears a symbolic bagel on her head and emblazons a giant rotating one at the altar of her lair.)"
As much as I enjoy the actual bagel seasoning, this might be one of the most stupid, cringe inducing scenes ever shown in a movie. And I love a dumb movie; I just re-watched Gymkata and had a fun time laughing at it.
EEAAO is the worst kind of bad movie because it thinks it's a great movie and Jamie Lee and MICHELLE YEOH really want us to believe it. I genuinely wanted the kid from the Goonies to have a hit movie but the whole thing is just one big embarrassment. This movie will quickly be forgotten---people will not be viewing it and discussing 20 years from now---but I do hope it leads to better movies in the future for all the actors involved (and for us as viewers).
| by Anonymous | reply 128 | February 23, 2023 11:05 PM |
You all should meet at a nice fern bar with lots of brass accents and sip sazerac slings and talk about how no one appreciates good movies like the Exorcist anymore and you can't believe kids today like DRECK like "Everything Everywhere."
It will make you all feel so much better.

| by Anonymous | reply 136 | February 25, 2023 3:12 AM |
I'm a fan of Michelle Yeoh (not sure if she's a great actress, but she has a great, commanding screen presence), and I went into this movie wanting very much to like it, if not love it.
The OP used the word "frenetic", and that was the first thing I noticed about it. Even in the first 5-10 minutes, before any of the surreal sci-fi shenanigans kicked in, it felt very manic in the way the relatively simple first scenes were staged. I found that a little off-putting.
When all the "WTF?" stuff kicked in, I had a better understanding of what they were going for, but I didn't think it worked particularly well. The tone of the whole thing was off...like they were trying to blend too many wildly different film genres into one. As much as I appreciate the ambition, I can't say I'm a fan of how it was executed.
It actually took me about a week and a half to finish the thing. I could only take it in small portions. There were parts of it I really did enjoy, but overall I found it a bit of a chore to watch.
And I don't think a single performance in it was worthy of an Oscar nom.

I’ve never seen a Marvel - or comic book - movie; and likely never will. Not a fan of American violent movies either.
That said, I loved EEAAO. It was the audacious premise of connecting parallel lives and threads which I found captivating. It reminded me of the originality of the Matrix movie.
I find it Oscar worthy for its innovation: tackling various subjects and stepping outside the all-too-repetitive American genres.
I found Yeoh’s performance superior to Blanchett’s and am/was a Cate fan.
| by Anonymous | reply 143 | February 26, 2023 2:44 AM |
R143, how did all of the parallel lives connect together?
Did we learn anything about them as people in their parallel lives or their real lives? Anything about them as people beyond surface level movie cliches (hardworking immigrant family running a laundromat trying to make ends meet and navigate standard family frictions).
I came away with no sense of any of them as individual people.
| by Anonymous | reply 144 | February 26, 2023 4:08 AM |
R144, I’m not going to spend energy going through the whole EEAAO movie for you. Watch it again to see the intersection of all the lives:
Daughter’s antagonism with Mother Explained as Archenemies
Wife reignites marriage via discovery of great Love(s) of Husband
Wife understands issues with IRS antagonist who was both an Enemy and Lover in other existences
It’s multilayered and multifaceted and obtuse viewers completely miss the layers of meaning as “frenetic”; akin to tone-deaf individuals missing tonality. (Or colour blind folks unable to process colour.) It’s a perceptual thing and as always with perception, some are unable to penetrate their own perceptual blinders. (For other examples: see Trump and QAnon et al.) Hence why the film elicits frustration and anger in some viewers: it goes beyond some self-imposed perceptual limits. At some level, people know this and it is triggering.

No, R145, but thanks for your condescension. The three things you mentioned, especially the first, are tropes. They're not innovative or interesting in and of themselves. The movie relies non-stop on cheesy special effects gimmicks and unfunny images (like wiener fingers) to move along and pad a movie that has very little story and no substance. How wonderful for you that you enjoyed it, but it's merely your take and it doesn't make anyone who understandably had no patience or interest in this movie either intellectually inferior (especially to you) or tone deaf. Spare us your homily on the merits of this movie.

oh lord. We KNOW the film was about her coming to terms with her life's choices and her relationship with her daughter. The film pretty much hits us over the head with that. It's not some new trope. It's been done over and over in other films and much better. In fact, I'd argue that because the two writers were male, that is why this movie about women suffered and was so fucking juvenile, even quite homophobic.
I'm just not a fan of films that have no subtlety. It's part of what is missing in cinema today. All the damn films of today are just in your face, non stop, action shit. Give me a Shawshank Redemption, Contact, or Stand By Me over this stupidity any day.

How absurd the notion that if you didn't like some contemporary movie you're old and out of touch or, even more laughably, conservative. This movie was nothing innovative; the script was a mess, and everything seemed to be made up as they went along. Having critical faculties doesn't make someone old.
I couldn't care less how this movie does in awards; so much crap gets awards and then blithers away, forgotten.
The best movie of the year, I think, was the Nan Goldin documentary "All The Beauty and the Bloodshed" by Laura Poitras.

Reducing dislike of Everything Everywhere All at Once to "you don't get it because you're old!" is deeply annoying (and calling people who don't like it either racists or conservatives is even worse). You don't have to be an elderly crank who dislikes everything more current than Casablanca to realize that the movie is filled with some really stupid jokes and concepts: the hot dog fingers, the award shaped like a butt plug, the rocks, the everything bagel.
And for a movie that its defenders call hip and current and innovative, I can't think of a cornier '80s sitcom level joke than naming a character Dierdre Beaubierdre. It's indefensible.

Michelle Yeoh isn’t winning the Oscar. The SAG Awards ceased being an Oscars bellweather following the union merge when thousands of national and local TV and radio broadcast “talent” were automatically made voters. Of course those idiots will vote for Yeoh. The Academy voters are much more discerning (like the BAFTA voters) and so Cate Blanchett will win.

I loved it - it was ambitious and complex and a crowd-pleaser but had a brain and assumed the audience could follow a complex storyline and was gross and mawkish and full of love but also delivered the action. It was just so pleasing on so many levels.

EEAAO is just fine. Didn't love it but liked it enough. Clever, funny, moving, and almost too gonzo for its own good. At least it had some great ideas, was visually and emotionally exciting, and had the balls to take some truly outrageous risks. It's not typical Oscar bait. Not by a long shot. That would be "All Quiet on the Western Front". Although that seemed a rehash of themes from Gallipoli. EEAAO has a certain freshness. There are other multiverse movies but not with this unique vision.

I didn't care for it, and that incredible review from Richard Brody at the New Yorker highlighted all my problems. It was like a Jackie Chan film written by Charlie Kaufman if directed by Richard Donner -- minus the fun, excitement, or intelligence.
Brody was right when he said the movie felt like an audition to do a Marvel franchise.

Figures the children here would think something that's no more than a Jackie Chan retread would be so fresh. Of course it is to them. That's what being young and having no points of reference do. You think something that's old is new because it's new to you.

Let me put my helmet on first, since I guess I'm going to be called a 'Klan-Granny, Neonazi, Magat, right-wing Republican, Rhonda Santis-loving troll', for expressing my opinion on DL about a movie that I saw.
Well, I watched most of this dreck; but I decided it wasn't worth wasting anymore time on, so I didn't finish it.
I'm not linking to it, but there's a DL thread now about 'maladaptive daydreaming.' I think that might explain what this film was about, or maybe just 'maladaptive moviemaking.'
Incidentally, since the insults on DL are everywhere, all-at-once, all the time now, I suggest we streamline the process of insulting each other by creating a handy reference chart.

R208 gets it. The film is scooping up awards because everything else is tired Oscar bait. EEAAO feels fresh by comparison and is a worthy to have in the Academy's books. The Oscars are a record of the prevailing stories, stars, and styles of their time. None of the other films speak to now in a way that deserves Best Picture this year.
R206 The Daniels met in film school, mastered their craft, and put their voice and influences into a film that became a huge hit. So what if they liven up the sagging MCU? The reviewer said that based on the Russo brothers success with MCU after doing great work on Community. Many people who worked on that show have gone on to have huge careers, win Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, and yes work for Marvel.
Ignore R217, a BAFTA dolt looking for the dustiest, whitest film possible. EEAAO is the frontrunner for Best Picture and has swept the major awards of the season.
R220 What? The film was so bizarre it is instantly memorable: dildo and buttplug fights, hot dog fingers, rocks with googley eyes, the white room, the exploding confetti head, the raccoon, and JLC looking horrible in yellow. It's a tedious family drama smartly made into a buzzworthy acid trip of a film for today's social media landscape. Again, points for relevancy.
R229 The Daniels (DS & DK) wrote and directed it. They also have a background in VFX and editing. They're full auteurs who met at Emerson. They did the hit music video for Turn Down for What (DK is the male dancer) and the indie hit film, Swiss Army Man with Daniel Radcliffe as a reanimated corpse. If you know their work, EEAAO represents the culmination of everything they've done so far.

Most Best Picture winners end up being embarrassing in hindsight— CODA, Green Book, The Artist, The King’s Speech, Crash. EEAAO will be no exception. It’s an even more gimmicky Birdman, and that won too.
| by Anonymous | reply 235 | March 3, 2023 3:08 AM |
And Crash--remember that piece of shit, R235? Forrest Gump, anyone?
| by Anonymous | reply 236 | March 3, 2023 3:11 AM |
R235 & R236 I'll accept the Crash win was unexpected, but racism does remain a problem in America and on DataLounge, just saying. Attitudes towards gays has shifted tremendously since 2005. Trans is another story.
Thank god The Social Network didn't win over The King's Speech. The last thing we needed to do was give cokehead Sorkin, alien data collector Zuckerberg, or tedious Fincher a bigger head or bragging rights.
CODA won because of the late-season backlash against Power of the Dog. Voters wanted a film without uncomfortable controversies. How often do deaf artists who aren't Marlee Matlin, get a chance to be honored?
Birdman utilized completely different film techniques (long takes vs rapid jump cuts) from EEAAO and though overhyped, it did deserve the BP win for that alone.
The Favourite should've won but was too British (and sapphic) for some wanting distance from the film's BAFTA sweep. Green Book winning very much in line with the sentimental Oscar wins from the 80s and 90s (see: Forrest Gump) and again tackles the evergreen topic of racism in America.
The Artist has historic value as the second silent film to win BP. How often does the chance come along to award a silent film, shot in black and white, that was also well made?

You massive, unbridled, shameless philistine, R237. Jesus fucking christ. "Racism remains a problem in America" so a shitty, unsubtle piece of sentimental crap (which is what Crash was) movie deserved to win Best Picture? Do you have any concept of art that doesn't involve paternalistic social messaging? And I ask this whilst fully agreeing with you that, yes, racism remains a problem (uh, duh).
And all that justification for other mediocre BP winners? Why? Are you on the Oscar's PR team? I don't think you are, and yet here you are posting excruciatingly inane shit like the above. I asked this way upthread but again and I am actually asking this: can people like you even conceive of someone not liking a film (or TV show or painting or song etc.) that you yourself do like, for any reason other than that person being a bigot?

I think a certain element in Hollywood is pushing hard for EEAAO to win, so as to fit their agenda.
But if we're being honest, Banshees should be the film to sweep both the Best Picture and acting awards.

It's a great movie which does a good job of creating some real stakes, and corresponding tension, but that's about it. People kept acting like it was mind blowing when I just found it thoroughly decent.
But then I also had difficulty getting past Cruise's slowly fading looks. He was such a handsome man back in the day.
| by Anonymous | reply 273 | March 7, 2023 4:00 AM |
The storyline of Banshees is/was off-putting: abuse, self-mutilation, domestic violence, death.
Regardless of great “acting”, can’t get behind the abusive themes which permeate the film.
In today’s world, there is enough “abuse”. Don’t need to laud films which perpetuate it.
Thus, Banshees doesn’t/did not do it for me.
EEAAO it is.

Just watched it last night. Enjoyed it more than I thought it would. It takes a little time to warm up to the story and style, but once I got into it the movie was surprisingly deep while still entertaining. I agree that the two female leads (Yeoh and Hsu) were excellent, while JLC was okay. I like JLC, but I never bought her as that character. Also nice seeing a veteran like James Hong again again.
I still think Triangle of Sadness had a broader, more relevant message but EEAAO would be a strong second for me. I've still to watch Tar and Banshees, and will then have watched all the nominees I had any interest in seeing.

I will then vote for the person I think has the best chance to take down the front runner if the race is close.
This year it's not as strategic as other years because most of the people who are in 2nd place are people I think deserve it. But to give you an example, I held my nose and voted for Angela Bassett because she's the only one who can unseat JLC. I thought of the five, Hong Chau deserves the award, but she's never going to get it. If she had a chance, I would have happily voted for her, but she's probably 5th in the category. I loathe JLC and her wretched performance so much, that I would vote for a non-performance in a Marvel movie if it helped keep her from winning an Oscar.
The other performances are either neck and neck (I voted for Butler and Blanchett), or so far behind that it doesn't matter (I voted for Barry Keoghan because he deserves the win, but we all know Short Round will get it). Same for Director. I know those two ass clowns will win no matter what, so I voted for Todd Field, who I think deserves it.
Picture I voted for Top Gun even though I didn't like it because it's the only film that could possibly unseat EEAAO. Of the 10 nominated, I would have voted for Tar (though it was not my pick for Best Film of the Year). I loved it, and it's probably #2 or #3 on my list, but it has no shot to win. Voted for Banshees for Original Screenplay even though I didn't much care for the film, because I think that's the only award it's going to get, if it gets any at all. I thought Tar deserved it. Adapted was a shit category, and there was nothing in there worth nominating this year, so I voted for Sarah Polley because I thought she's done some great work in the past.

[quote]The case has already been made regarding the film's complexity, topical themes and great performances. You don't have to agree with that, but those arguments are there.
Has it? By "case" do you mean someone has just stated that the film is complex, topical and has great performances, or that they've actually gone into their thinking on how they arrived at these opinions? Mostly what I've seen is just restating over and over again that it's good and genius etc. Which is fine, and it is fine to have that opinion. As I have my negative opinion. But it's not changing anyone's mind. (also topicality is neither here nor there for me, not a point in favour or a point against)
[quote]If you choose to mischaracterize the film's supporters as philistines, that's on you.
It's not supporting a film I don't like that makes a person a philistine (that opinion would actually make ME the philistine), it's the terrible, weird 'but it was happy and that other movie had abuse in it!' and 'you're racist if you don't like it!' that's philistine.
[quote]And, despite the video essays and analysis, people somehow still describe this movie as "making stupid people feel smart". I suppose these people said the same thing about Interstellar?
Fwiw I loathe the films of Christopher Nolan, in large part because they appeal to exactly the kind of asshole who thinks that anyone who doesn't like them simply doesn't understand them and needs to have their deep intellectual complexity explained to them over and over. Tenet was a piece of shit and the worst of Nolan's films for its faux-profundity. Hated it a lot more than EEAAO.
| by Anonymous | reply 316 | March 9, 2023 7:19 AM |
The hype for this movie reminds of that saying, "If you repeat something often enough, people will start to believe it."
It's complete propaganda.
Like FOX News repeating lies about Democrats, or advertisers shouting things over and over in commercials.
"Michelle Yeoh is going to win the Oscar!"
"Quan is going to win Best Actor!"
"EEAAO is going to win Best Picture!"
It's all propaganda and advertising, meant to brainwash voters into voting for EEAAO.
That's how low the Academy Awards have sunk.
| by Anonymous | reply 317 | March 9, 2023 11:11 AM |
R316. The "case" is in the video essays that are easily found on YouTube and on multiple DL threads.
View them or don't at your discretion.
But if one prefers not to view the existing analysis, then you'd best not make unfounded criticism of the movie as "feel good only".
| by Anonymous | reply 318 | March 9, 2023 11:26 AM |
[quote]R317: The hype for this movie reminds of that saying, "If you repeat something often enough, people will start to believe it." It's complete propaganda.
Well, it's certainly clear that the user behind the sock aggregate desperately attacking this film on DL believes that; he thinks if he peppers threads with as many posts as he can hating on this film, that he'll somehow convince people that it's bad.
| by Anonymous | reply 319 | March 9, 2023 6:57 PM |
"Look it up on YouTube" is an argument for antivaxxers and other assorted conspiracy theorists.
And it's not unfounded to say the movie is feel good only. For all of the film's machinations, it exists primarily on an emotional rather than an intellectual level. Everything in the movie is right there on the surface. The dialogue is almost entirely expositional, even in the emotional moments when it doesn't need to be. That's why when people describe what the movie is about, they don't talk about the subtext, they tend to just recount the plot.

Just watched it.
The daughter is good.
The husband is really good.
It's not well-written, though. There's a way to make multiverse work in a movie (see, e.g., that Spiderman one). But this did not work. I could see the daughter getting an Oscar.
| by Anonymous | reply 323 | March 10, 2023 1:27 AM |
R320. Sure, I wouldn't trust YouTube as far as I could throw it for news or factual information.
But this is a movie. It's art. YouTube is fine for opinion, and video essays are just analysis. There are no stakes.
Regardless, your purchasing habits are at your own discretion.
| by Anonymous | reply 324 | March 10, 2023 5:08 AM |
You show your own bad faith when you mischaracterize what people with differing opinions are saying, R318. I never said that the defense of the movie was on feel good "only" - I said I'd seen a lot of it in this specific thread. Which I have.
And tell me, if there was a food that wasn't to your taste (or a painting or a song etc.), would you really seek out fucking Youtube videos arguing in favour of something your personal taste interprets as "bad?" Come on. You wouldn't. Or perhaps you would, who knows. I might for some very long book or classic work etc. but for this movie? No. Again, people posting in this thread are free to tell me why they liked it - without resorting to insults and baseless accusations - and I'll read and consider their opinions.
People who truly think that you can use logic and explanation to convince others to share their tastes are misguided at best. I didn't like the movie. I'm not a sockpuppet with multiple accounts. There are others who also didn't like it. That's OK. Liking it is also OK. No one needs to be offended or angry about it, and yet this thread is full of extremely angry people.
| by Anonymous | reply 325 | March 10, 2023 6:24 AM |
R325. People always confuse taste and preference.
Taste has historically referred to the ability to distinguish quality. Preference is exactly what it says on the tin.
Using food as an analogy, diet is preference, but taste is the ability to distinguish bad food from high quality food. I may not like asparagus, but I have the taste to be able to tell when it is extremely well cooked compared to when it is rotten.
So you may not like the movie, but if you are unable to determine the quality aspects of it - and thus unable to determine why other people did like the movie - then you have bad taste. And you can learn taste through education and analysis. Logic and explanation.
I'm not critiquing your preferences - nobody should be doing that. I wouldn't critique you picking fish over chicken for dinner. But taste is more than relative preference, and that's what awards should be about too. Not a popularity contest but an assessment of the movie's quality.

R338. It ended with the mother essentially stopping the main villain - the daughter - from killing herself.
The danger to the multiverse was the pervasive and poisonous influence of the Bagel - the manifestation of the daughter's nihilism - that was made obsolete once the mother rejected it's point of view in favor of a more life-affirming, anti-nihilistic perspective.

I think it's being considered "woke" because the "if you don't like it you're a bigot" crowd is in this thread howling about white supremacist tears. Alongside the "if you do like it you're a stupid fucking wokester" crowd. As is DL tradition.
My political beliefs probably qualify me as "woke" to most on DL but I didn't like this movie. I also don't think winnign a shitload of Oscars is any kind of proof of quality. Those cheering on establishment box-ticking probably aren't supporting the side they think they are, either.

Agree, R375. The whole multiverse concept is fascinating. There have been other movies as innovative: The Matrix comes to mind. However, this film, like The Matrix triggers some as it does not resonate with where some viewers are. Hence the divisive stances regarding it.
Do think this will be a cult classic down the road akin to The Matrix.

R376, you don’t get to be a cult classic after winning seven Oscars, six of which are in top categories. EEAAO doesn’t even get to be the cool movie that loses out to the square choice, like Pulp Fiction when it lost to Forrest Gump.

R379, do you really think the multiverse concept is going to be a significant part of cinematic storytelling years down the road? As a concept, it so easily lends itself to cheap narrative tricks that I think it will inevitably run its course.
We already see how cynically movie studios are exploiting it for nostalgic fan-service (let's get every Spider-Man and every Batman and so forth in one movie), and it's closely associated with Marvel movies, which seem to have finally reached the point of cultural decline.

Did not say “significant part of cinematic storytelling”.
Multiverse will be a part of culture and accepted daily life.
(Think of that neighbor down the road that you get “bad vibes” from every time you interact. You don’t know them well, but something is “off” when you encounter one another. No, r386, the multiverse theory has been around for a while but there is currently no evidence that it exists. Hell, even Stranger Things did this (better). Lots of books about it too.
EEAAO wasn't original in it's ideas at all. And those "bad vibes" you get from people are instincts. I can read people really well and have been told I should have been a profiler. I don't think they have anything to do with some multiverse. My instincts have served me well over the years.

[quote] No, [R386], the multiverse theory has been around for a while
Indeed. Hugh Everett in 1957. Although William James first coined the term Multiverse from a philosophical standpoint. Everett gave The Many Worlds Theory a mathematical base.
[quote] but there is currently no evidence that it exists.
Speak with String Theorists. Or M Theorists. They might disagree when they base their mathematics on dimensions or 10 or more as these fit the properties of nanoscale actions. Although some - like yourself, R387 - find it hard to even imagine or perceive other dimensions on the macro scale. (Limited perception?)
[quote] EEAAO wasn't original in its ideas at all.
Who claimed that EEAAO was the originator of the Multiverse idea? This has been in the Science Fiction genre for quite some time. What EEAAO has done, is propel these ideas in a medium which delivered award-circuit attention: expanding the reach of these ideas into groups of individuals who were previously unexposed to said themes.
[quote] And those "bad vibes" you get from people are instincts. I can read people really well and have been told I should have been a profiler. I don't think they have anything to do with some multiverse. My instincts have served me well over the years.
Good for you that your “instincts” have served you well enough, R387. And that you you were lauded to be a “profiler” based on your instincts. (We all have them, by the way….some are more developed than others.).
But the finer point remains, from whence and where do such “instincts” arise?
| by Anonymous | reply 389 | March 16, 2023 8:42 AM |
The movie's title is part of its appeal. Everything, Everywhere, All at Once aptly describes the feeling of 2020s overwhelm.
| by Anonymous | reply 390 | March 16, 2023 9:11 AM |
r389, in my case, the instincts arose when I was a child and was scared to death of my own father. I spent a lot of time learning to read him to know when I needed to hide. I predicted that he would attempt suicide not once, but twice during my lifetime; the last attempt happening just before xmas as I predicted he would do to try to get attention. I didn't predict his attempt at murdering my mom but in my mind I saw him murdering all of us, meaning my siblings as well. PTSD is a horrible thing that I don't wish on anyone but it did shape me into the person I am who can read most people.
My instincts have served me well. Not everyone has them but then again, not everyone needed to.

| by Anonymous | reply 393 | March 16, 2023 11:57 AM |
R387. EEAAO uniquely uses the multiverse as a metaphor for nihilism. Or if it isn't original, then I just haven't seen that connection anywhere else.
It FEELS intuitive though. Because the multiverse makes us ever smaller in the grand scheme of things. Of course, comic books have been doing the multiverse forever, but it's often seen as this exciting thing with unlimited potential.
Yet the reality is, in comics and in real life, that a multiverse actually strips us of free will, uniqueness, and purpose. Or at least, that's how it often feels to me.
And Stranger Things does not have a multiverse. Not how I remember it anyway. They have ONE parallel universe filled with monsters, and that's about it. And that parallel universe might not even really exist depending on how you interpret Season 4 and what happens in S5.

R387, let’s agree to disagree, then, as scientifically/medically speaking, all humans have “instincts”….since you seem to be speaking in the literal sense.
And speaking of literal, your post @ R391 is a materialistic/hard reality interpretation of the question previously posed. The query involved the instincts….promptings…..flashes of insight….inexplicable sensations, etc that we (as a collective of humanity) all have from time to time (as noted in the post relating to déjà vu and other anomalous things like serendipity/coincidence, and conditions like PLS and FAS.)
Sounds like your backstory is quite involved, R387, and this may explain your perceptions regarding many things.

It was way too out there and violent for me on a plane- I’ll give it another shot streaming on a large screen. But the violence and constant use of metaphors is hard. Can’t the essential drama and valid story be displayed in reality? Always much more powerful. And the martial arts violence has always been a hard swallow for me- no different tgat the good guys without a scratch and the bad guys mauled in melees of special effects in the Marvel films that bore the heck out of me.
So I’m not likely to like it so far!

I agree with r391. Lots of people who grew up around unpredictable volatile family members develop hyper-vigilance. They become very adept at looking for potential red flags in people, because they do it unconsciously as it’s a trauma response and a survival mechanism. Red flags can be very subtle and a lot of people can’t really express what tips them off.
There’s a really great book called “The Gift of Fear” by Gavin DeBecker (I think that’s his name) that talks about how important it is to honor your gut is when it comes to feeling uneasy about people or situations. A lot of times people tend to dismiss those feelings if they can’t articulate why they feel uneasy.
